It was canon to begin with. It's the tie in to get Classic Sonic back into Modern Sonic's world. The whole time in Mania, Robotnik was using the Phantom Ruby to warp Sonic around. Even in the real final boss, after collecting all the Chaos Emeralds, Robotnik and the robot you fight, are fighting for the Phantom Ruby. In the last cutscene after that, Sonic gets warped to Modern's world.
