They definitely could have inserted him into cyberspace and come up with a plot point like Sonic's form is different depending on the memories that cyberspace is pulling from him to create the reality around him, but the game would have been far worse off for it. This is the first time in a very long time I enjoyed the 2D sections of a Sonic game

Generations was advertised as a game with a 50/50 split of 3D and 2D levels, but in reality it was 75% 2D and 25% 3D. In Frontiers the 3D levels are all 3D, and the 2D levels are all 2D. It's fantastic and insane they didn't try it sooner
