I only have two problems with all the references (and even then, they're just nitpicks). First is the fact that Sticks is from an alternate continuity, and yet Amy mentions her in the ending as if they already know each other. Granted, she probably has a counterpart in this continuity, so you could excuse it with 'only Amy (and possibly Cream) knows Sticks in this universe'. Second is the fact that it makes it harder for newcomers (like my Dad) to get into it. I'm doing my best to explain everything he needs to know to him, but it's hard to do that without getting into all the discourse involving the previous games, and I think I'm losing him.

Also, Sticks technically already existed on that reality, but only on Spinoffs like "Mario and Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics Games", and "Sonic Runers", but i agree that she needed a better introduction first.

While I like the many references Sonic makes knowing it's proper acknowledgment of what's canon, it still rings hollow to me because there's too many. It starts to feel less like a cheeky wink saying "remember this?!" And instead starts feeling like a nostalgia checklist and that mainly leaves me feeling indifferent to these references because of Sonic Team's past over reliance on nostalgia. It feels less genuine and more just an attempt to win fans over, if that makes sense.

I just love how all references perfectly fit together how crazy the Sonic series gets with its characters. Just look at the Black Arms, Dark Gaia or the villains in this very game. It's so weird to think that these extremes exists together with a bunch of rainbow animals.

After reading about Whisper a few days ago (a wolf sniper who lost her friends to a tragic betrayal but who continues to fight for good), I'd love to see Tangle and Whisper introduced in future games. They're very different personalities to the usual Team Sonic roster and the new dynamics (very energetic Tangle vs No nonsense Knuckles, outgoing Sonic and quiet Whisper) could be interesting.

Why wouldn’t Dark Gaia and Chip be canon? They were part of the main story of a mainline game. I’m confused why you’d make a big deal about them being canon, which they always were, but just casually mention that the game confirms Sticks The Badger is canon when she had only appeared in a spin-off, side series.

Sticks being canon to both the Boom and the main series continuities was always planned, but never properly executed. The closest before this was Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where she was made playable.

Meanwhile, you have rooftop run in generations, a game that came out only 3 years after unleashed. That game established Sonic adventure, 06, unleashed and colors are canon, so making a big deal out of nowhere about Dark Gaia and Chip is unnecessary and dumb.

I know I had the exact same reaction, for many references to previous titles. Like, Sonic Boom, canon to the rest? It was clearly meant as a soft reboot, so it's weird to try to include it now. Colors? That one doesn't even look like a Sonic game. The very idea of making every Sonic game canon is stupid. Sonic has never built up a world. There is no "unified Sonic universe". Each game was its own thing. And it's fine, world-building is not mandatory. These references are cool to hear though.

So many cool references in the game! I love how you set it up so that every reference lead into another one, it felt super cohesive. Two more that spring to mind is in the Egg Memo that mentions the United Federation and Planet Donpa Kingdom, Eggman mentions EggNet, which is another reference to the comics! While this one isn't confirmed, I'm convinced that Find Your Flame, the song that plays during the fight with the Knight Titan, has a melody line that references Infinite's theme from Forces, and it's even performed by the same artist, Tyler Smyth.

Here's a couple more you missed: At the start of the game, when Sonic first stands up after escaping Cyber Space for the first time, he makes a pose that looks so similar to the action stance he makes in Sonic Adventure, that i'd count it as a reference. Also, in that same Egg Memo which confimed TSR as canon, an "EggNet" is mentioned. The EggNet is an Eggman Empire communications network that has until now only been mentioned and a kind of significant plot device in the IDW comics. The "Bad Guys" miniseries has been the piece of Sonic media that has explored this concept to it's fullest so far.

Silver is also mentioned once you talk to the hermit Koco after maxing out your stats. He gives an "if only we had a hero like you during our time of need" line, and Sonic goes "I know a time-traveler. Want us to rewrite history when this is over?"

The line "Let's do it, to it" dates back to SatAM and is rarely used. Also on the lines of the show fishing up an 'Acorn' and a 'Silver Acorn' is incredibly likely to be a reference to Sally Acorn. One of the most significant (but forgotten) characters in the Sonic franchise.

Eggman mentions that he’ll integrate Sage into his eggnet, which would be a nice change of pace from Orbot and Cubot, to which Sage reflects on how they are like her brothers, since both she and them are Eggman’s creations.

Fun fact: Shadow has stated himself that he is not the true Ultimate Lifeform and that Sonic is. All has to do with the Mural seen in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 where the echidnas prophesied the battle on Angel Island between Sonic and Eggman. I almost wonder if the whole final boss fight with The End being a planet-like being set to destroy everything, Sonic being thrown/shot through the planet-like being, the planet structure planning to self destruct when hindered, and Sage’s sacrifice took inspiration from the battle with Dark Oak from Sonic X. While still fairly different in areas, a lot if it felt familiar and like a potential nod to the show or had used that fight as inspiration.

You missed the reference to Silver the Hedgehog. The reference is only discovered once you have maxed out ALL your stats (Attack/Defence/Speed/Rings) and then speak with Hermit Koko. During the conversation, he mentions about being in the dream for too long and how things could have been different if he did more like his brother, Elder Koko. Sonic mentions that "he knows a Time Traveller" who could maybe change their fate in which Hermit declines the offer. It is known that Silver does travel from the distant future in multiple games, being 06, Rivals, Forces just to name a few.

There is a reference you missed. When Sonic first talked to the elder Koco on the first Island and during one of the optional conversations Sonic has with Sage on the final Island, Sonic says "Let's do it to it." That's a direct reference to the Sonic Archie comics. It was his catch line. Similar to Mario's Let's a Go". He even at one point calls Tails "little bro" witch is another thing he says in the Archie comics.

A lot of people get the wrong idea about what isn’t “canon.” Anything from the games is canon, except for a few spin offs, namely sonic chronicles. Even during the whole “two worlds” deal, the majority of the games were still canon. There might be a few things here and there are contradicted in between certain games, or small plot holes, but those are bound to happen in a series that’s 30+ years old.

I love the references especially because it doesn’t seem to favor any specific era or game. From classic, adventure, to modern every era of Sonic is mentioned. As a Sonic Unleashed fan it was great having it referenced.

I like the one where Sonic Looks at a Box on top of a piece of land sticking out and says "That is begging to be climbed, the view would be incredible!" A reference to a Sonic 2006 bug where you can stand on a box and attack to make Sonic and it go up infinitely. Its not the exact quote, just going from my memory.

I would LOVE it if we were to at the very least given a comic where Tangle gets a good runaround of a Classic Sonic location (like Angel Island), getting to see all the amazing zones found within. Mushroom Hill Zone would be a real playground for her, with all the weird pulleys and mushroom hang gliders and all.

An Easter egg I found just now is when your in the cyber space levels and hold down on the control stick while running you do Sonic’s classic spin dash / roll from Sonic 1 and it even does damage

FYI: you can fight the hard mode boss by simply toggling hard mode on before the loading screen after the final Island Titan dies, so you don't need to replay the whole game. Unless you want to :p
