Really, I feel the main ingredients for a great boss fight are as follows: *Spectacle.* It's supposed to be a momentous occasion in any game, a proper treat for the player's eyes and ears. Everything presentation-wise such as animation, choreography and music are key elements here. *Stakes.* This is more of a story element and a bit more subtle, but fighting off against a rival on equal footing as you, a god who destroyed a city, or something else that endangers your close ones by virtue of existing rings way differently than generic giant orc #32 (no actual examples from sonic that i can think of lmao). *Skill.* Bosses are meant to challenge the player, to test their knowledge of the game's systems. I'm not saying they should be so difficult that you need extensive knowledge and prior experience to beat them - but enough to demand most of your attention. One misc element that fits into all categories to some extent, I find, is that the boss shouldn't just run away constantly from you, nor stand around and get pummeled without doing much of its own. Good bosses don't go down without a fight, unless the story/stakes aspects are significantly emphasized over the presentation and gameplay portions. With that in mind, and also knowing I've yet to play Sonic Frontiers (in fairness I probably won't for a long while - only the bosses and some music garner my attention, the rest doesn't interest me much), I can only rank the bosses pretty highly and above the majority of other Sonic bosses. They got a good chunk of spectacle, carried by the music making it feel even more intense than it should be - but even the sequences where Super Sonic fucking YEETS the wyvern into the mountain side, or pulls a near-Metal Gear Excelsus on the Knight are absolute highlights. Stakes are also pretty high, all things considered. Some of the music and presentation leaks through in here, of course, but the effect is all the same - you wanna put down these beasts to free them from their eternal unachievable goals, and save your friends + the world if it gets to that. The only place where Frontiers' bosses slightly fall apart is the skill aspect: as the player, you have more dedicated attacks and combos, plus the block/parry mechanic, but many of the bosses just stand and take the blows until knocked below the half health threshold, when they get a bit more serious. If they went a bit further and gave the impression that the bosses are out for Sonic's blood, not holding back from trying to absolutely murder the guy - even if they just whail, charge into Sonic and attack wildly without a significant challenge increase - that could still help further elevate the bosses to a level where they're a bigger signature on MGR's radar. Nevertheless, from seeing playthroughs of the game and how the boss fights work (and ignoring that at high attack power they fall very easily), I'll rank them about the same as Generations' rival fights which are about the best the franchise have had till now. For context on that comparison, neither of them really hold back except in Silver's attack speed and the notion of being a continuous runner (if there was freedom for the player to stop but pressure to keep moving, lest Silver crushes Sonic or something, that would elevate the stakes a lot). Shadow's a match for Sonic and rebounds when you bump into him mid-boost, which is fucking cool, while defeating him is neither entirely easy nor... any difficult really, but it's a freaking cool fight.
