Sonic Frontiers is looking to actually have a focus on story! And with clues given in the most recent story trailer, I think I have a theory on where this narrative might go. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the Wanderer Theory.

It's a cool idea, but we don't even have enough context to say this is what they're going for. All we have are the cryptic warnings of SAGE (who seems to be the one holding Amy hostage, based on that scene), and literally nothing else. Even IF Sonic unintentionally releases some sort of danger, that doesn't mean it'll say anything about his character (especially if he _needs_ to carry out these actions to save Tails and Amy regardless).

Plus even when Merlina revealed her plot to make the kingdom eternal, Sonic tries to stop her because of his beliefs of nothing lasting forever. I wouldn't say Sonic's a bad person for not wanting something to go on forever but I can definitely see it from Merlina's perspective and how Sonic seems to be stopping a "good ending".

I was actually wondering if the voice guiding Sonic will end up being the true villain. The voice is guiding Sonic to the world’s demise without him knowing it by using his friends as bait. Sage knows this and is targeting Sonic. It would be an interesting twist

Honestly, my theory is that SAGE is actually part of a larger intelligence, maybe she was initially designed as a system to manage weaponry of some kind, before she grew beyond her programming. eventually after some large threat, she saw to displace herself from the rest of the world, but in her grief of being alone, she fragmented herself down. the AI that assists sonic is probably her "nature" that was specifically coded into her, but is also a vital portion of her psyche; Eggman probably finds the AI and attempts to use it. maybe the original portion *IS* the AI that assists sonic but inherently forgot why, SAGE would be the main memory. (unaware of things, just that she had to protect something) also, maybe a theory that SAGE was probably called SAGES (Say-jess, or Say-gis). kinda like a NiGHTS/Reala or Balan/Lance-type thing. if intended as a war weapon, maybe Aegis; maybe an Ecnhidna creation before they went down to the Gizoid. though ultimately in-fighting among the echidna tribes caused Chaos to manifest. would be kind of interesting to see how the plot would go once they reveal that Knuckles/Chaos Emerald animation cinematic since he initially seemed disconnected from promotional material besides Amy, Tails and Big. at least im thinking the AI/robots were echidna-made. also have to wonder if the master emerald is involved since it reconstructed some areas within cyberspace, though that could just be from Sonic's memories, rather than any kind of latent echoes of beings that utilized emeralds in the past.

Seeing a little more of the cutscenes makes this theory really sound. The voice calls Sonic "the key" which could easily be turned around as "the key that will set me free." I imagine that the fifth island will see us rescuing the voice's owner, or something like that, fully releasing her onto the islands to do what she pleases. It's fun to think about

Then, in the endgame, Sonic will realize what's happened, and Sage will help him defeat the true villain, maybe like the final battle of Sonic Unleashed where Chip helps Super Sonic defeat Dark Gaia.

Or maybe the corruption doesn’t have much effect. Something similar already happened. Remember Unleashed? Average people and some creatures (like the Phoenix) were possessed by Dark Gaia, but Sonic was mentally unaffected because, according to Chip, he is just too good.

I honestly had very similar thoughts when looking at the trailer and some of the cutscenes shown from gamescom. When you think about it, a couple things don't line up with Sonic and friends arriving at Starfall Islands and Sage's intentions. If Sage is the one behind trapping everyone in cyberspace, and is aware that the Titans are holding Sonic's friends hostage, why wouldn't she make a compromise? She releases Sonic's friends, tell them about the chaos emeralds since that's why they're here, and everyone goes home happy. Even if they turn on her, she'd easily be able to send everyone back except for Sonic and continue trying to stop him I guess. Simply put, what if Sage is completely unaware of this? And as far as she knows, local island hedgehog is currently ruining everything for no reason. I agree that the story might have taken some cues from Shadow of the Colossus, but I think the twist might happen as soon as the first island. Because unlike that game, Frontiers has Sage, and it's abundantly clear what her motives are. They're not being subtle, with her trailer lines and even cutscene dialogue reiterating that she just wants Sonic to stop. She even tells him not to approach the titan instead of just outright attacking him. We know for a fact that she's trying to stop him because he could potentially cause cataclysmic events. With that, I can't see her remaining as an antagonist for much longer. I can't imagine she'll constantly appear throughout the game to go "Sonic stop, you'll doom us all!" while Sonic never listens until the "twist" where he obviously dooms them all. It might be that the voice betrays Sonic after he collects the seven emeralds, and possibly uses that power to sieze control of the islands. And, from that point on, Sonic and Sage are working together to stop them and save his friends. To provide some minor evidence for this, a while back there were leaked files of Sonic Origins that belonged to Frontiers. Said files leaked Big the Cat, Cyberspace, and Elder Kocos. There were also files related to Sage, such as "SageUseHour" and, more importantly, "SecondTutoIslandSage". This sounds like the twist happens at the end of Kronos, Sonic and Sage team up, and from that point on she's a part of Sonic's abilities. Hence you're given a tutorial on the second island of how to use her.

I love this premise, we haven't had a (relatively) deeper story in a long time, I'd love to see something like this in the game. One more thing I noticed: the enemies don't really look to have an "evil" design. Large bosses and enemies of the past, like Dark Gaia or Solaris or the Dark Queen or the Time Eater for example, usually look pretty evil and scary. These new enemies remind me more of Guardians from Breath of the Wild: not inherently evil, but controlled to attack the player. The devs designed the Guardians to not look evil, because they originally aren't. Perhaps a similar situation is going on here. Also I love how defiantly he looks back at Sage as he presses that Cyber Space throne thing.

This what I love about sonic's character. Whether he viewed as a hero or bad guy he doesn't care. He will always do things his way. Sometimes his actions are reckless and can cause harm but in the end sonic will always do the right thing but just in his own way it doesn't matter what nobody thinks of him.

He kind of just disappears at the end of Forces, and we see him trapped in cyberspace in Frontiers. I hope we get some kind of explanation, unlike Generations where I guess he just found a way out.

I had the same mother-daughter theory months ago, it just doesn't make sense to have two sentient AI in a game with no connection. However, we know Sage is Eggman's creation now gone rogue according to previous story info, so it would be impossible for Sage to be from the Starfall Islands and therefore impossible for her to have a relationship with the island's AI. Unless...they're the same. Hear me out, Eggman tries to fuse his AI Sage with the peaceful AI of the island. In doing so, the island AI's directive get's distorted. It still wants to protect the island, but now tries to rule over it with an iron fist and uses robots to do so, kinda like a certain Egghead we know. However, a piece of the island's AI breaks away before fusing, uncorrupted and looking for someone to save the day and stop it's corrupted half. In any case I find it hard to imagine a scenario where Eggman's AI ends up being a good guy. She tried to kill a Koco!

I think this story has parallels to sonic 1, sage is actually destroying the environment to create a robotisicised world and what sage means by "your reckless actions are a danger to this world" is that sonic's actions of destroying the robots and a danger to sages world

Theory: Sage is covered in red glitching effects similar to how Sonic was. So, what if Sage once went down the same path Sonic is going down, but saw the error of her way and stopped what she was doing before it was too late? What if she went around messing with this world just like Sonic is doing, but then she realized what she’s doing was destroying this world along with herself, and so, she stopped whatever she was doing and made it her duty to protect this world from people like herself and Sonic? The name Sage means wise, after all. Sage may have been an outsider to this world just like Sonic and his friends, but now she has become part of this world, trapped because she's too glitched to leave it.

My theory is that the Starfall Islands are a massive construct created by the Phantom Ruby, with Sage being a physical embodiment of it.

Honestly there's a simpler solution, if you looked at the Red around Sage and the red in general + all the glitching with Amy in the pod, She's probably *at least* linked to the Phantom Ruby in some way, shape, or form. From a story perspective at least it would make sense, The Phantom Ruby has been a pretty big plot point for a while.

Very cool vid. Sage (from what we’ve seen) definitely doesn’t strike me as a very trustworthy character at the moment… especially in the opening of the most recent trailer where she seemingly has no qualms getting rid of the little koco in the beginning of the trailer. I wouldn’t listen to a word she says either lol. There’s probably a much bigger mystery at hand. I really have no idea where this story is going. Interested to find out what happens.

What Sage is up to is very cryptic and we know nothing about the story. Here are some ideas that came to my mind randomly after trailer: 1.Sage may be corrupted or glitchy and keeps changing which side she is on. 2.She is at first on Sonic's side but her methods are ruthless so he doesn't trust her no more. 3.Sonic doesn't trust Sage but she is actually good and maybe there is something more to those koco guys he saves. 4.Since everything has this cyber theme maybe none of this world exist its just simulation and Sage is actually human and imagined this stuff or something of this kind. It's odd to me that she is clearly a little girl. Also what the heck are those purple powers Sonic has? If Sage is red then what this purple energy is from, someone else or her from past or something. I mean it's impossible to figure out right now what is this game about it could be literally anything with so little info.

This honestly gave me an idea for the final boss of the game. If the AI who helps us is the bad guy in the end, then it should mean the AI even learns from Super Sonic. So what if, as the final boss of the game, we have to fight a Cyber Super Sonic, instead of us being Cyber Super Sonic. And as a way to cement this idea, a future DLC where we go through a similar adventure but with regular Sonic enemies and other stages, all while the clone of Sonic is slowly learning what it means to be Sonic, while also losing it's sense of heroism and instead of helping the animals ends up corrupting them

I think this theory is really good and has me more hype for the game than ever before! This is an awesome twist for Sonic and challenges his moral code. Kinda reminiscent of how Mephiles manipulates Silver to kill Sonic. All in all I just really hope we get a crazy good Sonic game that'll put it back on top. Btw I had a weird theory but what if Amy is somehow connected to Sage and the AI and stuff? Like why just show Amy? We all know Tails is Sonic's best friend and closest companion, he's even in more Sonic games than Amy herself, so why so much new emphasis on Amy's character now? Either this ship finally arrived, or Amy is somehow connected to this island and the many characters inhabiting it. Maybe this AI is using only Amy to manipulate Sonic? So keeping the so far pretty accurate story leaks in mind. Than will we have 2 unrelated AI's in the game. One Eggman made created to take over the starfall islands systems and one ancient one that already was on the island. With how things currently are progressing is it most likely that the Eggman AI is the one that teams up with Sonic as her creator was also captured and sealed in cyber space by the islands AI which will properly be Sage. So as Eggman was interested in these island its save to assume they have some kind of ultimate power he wants to use and Sage tries to keep that thing locked up. Because Sonic and friends stumbled on an chaos Emerald search accidentally into this mess but Sonic being so OP that Sage's usual tricks to contain intruders fail has now to try to stop Sonic how him turn has to properly aid the Eggman AI to unleashed the power Eggman was after as its seal and the cyber space locks on Sonic's friends are on the same system. Sonic's glich-y-ness is properly related to the usual "Cyber space banishment" containment Sage uses that Sonic somehow manged to escape and is used as a ticking time how long Sonic has to beat the like the Fire of judgment in Secret Rings till his escape from Cyber space will result in some nasty after effects. Or maybe till Sage can seal Sonic for good. Fallow that logic will the end than properly be Eggman stealing the main villain stop after his AI successfully used Sonic to free him and give him access to the Ultimate power he was after, Sonic beats again and the day is saved.

Your theory makes sense to me bro. Looking at Sage's design she has that same glitch effect that Sonic has in the nighttime scene. I personally noticed this effect looks similar to the Phantom Ruby's effects, and combined with a confirmed move called "Phantom Dash", I have reason to suspect the Phantom Ruby may somehow be connected to these islands. It's the only explanation I have for why Eggman would be here.

I am very excited and hyped on Sonic Frontiers and I really think your thoughts and crazy theory of the story of the game is amazing and I think that the story is a improvement on the story of Sonic Forces and I am not optimistic about Frontiers, but I really like the Open-Zone and Cyber Space gameplay of Sonic Frontiers!!!

There was a lot of stuff in here that I didn't even think about but sounds very plausible. I'm definitely very intersted in a possible moral dilemma. "A world or a select few of your loved ones" is a question even I couldn't answer in full confidence so it would be cool to see how it's tackled here (if it is tackled that is. Given the somewhat recent discourse surrounding the comics and how "sonic bad cause not end eggman", I hope this isn't a trend where the writer keeps portraying sonic as worse and worse, with flaws after flaws after flaws. Sonic is the type of character with no arc or growth, but rather who makes the character arcs happen for other characters.
