Sonic Generations[a] is a 2011 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, and Microsoft Windows. Produced in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, the game follows Sonic and his sidekick Tails as they form an alliance with their past selves. It features two gameplay styles: "Classic", which plays from a side-scrolling perspective like that of the original Sega Genesis Sonic games, and "Modern", 3D levels similar to those in Sonic Unleashed (2008) and Sonic Colors (2010).
Development of Sonic Generations began following the completion of Unleashed. Sonic Team sought to re-imagine the most popular aspects of the franchise in high-definition, and developed the game using the Hedgehog Engine. Each location and many bosses in the game are previously seen in an earlier entry in the series, with the game including numerous other references to past entries. Devil's Details and Dimps helped create the Windows and 3DS versions, respectively. The Windows version is noted for its active modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, levels, and assets for the game.
The game received positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, selling 1.85 million copies by May 2012. Reviewers found its visuals, audio, and gameplay to be highlights, and called it a good tribute to the franchise. It also received some criticism, mostly for its occasional frame rate and control problems. Reception to the 3DS version was mixed; reviewers criticized its short length and design, and deemed it worse than Dimps' previous Sonic games. The Classic iteration of Sonic introduced in the game has continued to make appearances throughout the franchise.

I remember renting this game from the library and playing it on my brothers 3ds when I was 4 making it my first sonic game I did get the console version later on and loved that one more but the 3ds one still has a place in my heart

Okay. An expansive idea to the concept of "Playing through Sonic's handheld history": Have the Rival Races actually be from the game that most emphasiszes them: Sonic Rivals. They could've pulled so many good stages from Rivals 1 and 2. Especially since all three rival characters appear in that game.

To be fair modern sonic on the console is also not fully 3D cuz it has 2D segments in levels. Also Sega made a voting pool which levels is your favourite from said games and i think casino night,mushrom hill,emerald coast and radical highway made it to the second place.

Yooooo the same thing happened to me I remember back when it first came out there was a commercial that only showed like a cgi cutscene in 3d implying that modern sonic would be in 3d and I got so dissapointed when I finally played it recently

I wish we got stuff from the game gear, advance and rush games (with the exceptions of water palace and tropical resort) rival races with fang, gemerl and blaze would have been way cooler. Hell it would have been a good marketing strategy to the game gear games are on the 3ds virtual Console (aside from sonic chaos and a few spin offs) the ds games are playable on the 3ds and they totally could’ve got advance games working on at least the new 3ds.

I heavily disagree. The fact that you can turn it off in the console version means that its not forced on you. I'm not the biggest fan of the Homing Attack on Classic, but it's required in Gens 3D once you start Emerald Coast.

the reason why its not 3d is the bullshit draw distance limitanions of the 3ds. you are even going to notice it in your sonic lost world review. edit- the special stages work in 3d because there is not much background. its just the same set of tiles over and over.

The level desing is a little hard to get used to,it suffers from the same flaw that Sonic Rush has. People that will ignore that flaw and continue to play this game will likely like this game,but people that see these flaws and stop playing will simply call this trash.

Decided to get this game a day ago and I'm already hooked! After completing Generations on PC, I wanted more Sanic, but there was no more for me to complete.. But with Generations on 3DS, it's more content. A whole new game! I only recently heard of its existence I personally don't care for most aspects of this game. I'm skipping thru the story and dialogue. As a completionist, I'm here to collect and unlock errything. And I'm already hooked on the gameplay and back into that addictive S rank grind I love Act 2 Sanic so much in this. It's everything I've been wanting from a modern side scrolling/2D/2.5D Sanic. Boost, homing attack, and intensely fast and challenging platforming with lots of collecting!

It would make more sense if 3DS Sonic Generations would have Green Hill Stage from Game Gear STH1, Aqua Lake Zone from Game Gear STH2, fight the Knuckles in a boss battle from Sonic Triple Trouble then unlock Knuckles to play out of story mode, Turquoise Hill Zone from Sonic Chaos, Yellow Desert Zone from Sonic Blast, Fight the Final boss from Sonic Blast, Angel Island Zone from Sonic Advance, Techno Base from Sonic Advance 2, fight Emerl and several E-121 Phi and Chaos Gamma at the Death Egg in a boss version of Sonic Battle then unlock Emarl to play outside of story mode, Meteor Base Zone, and in a race against Shadow and Rouge from Sonic Rival, Chaotic Inferno Zone in a race against Silver and Metal Sonic, fight Hyper Eggrobo from Sonic Advance 3 and unlock Shadow, Rouge, Silver, and Metal Sonic depending on recruitments are being meet in Sonic Rivals 1, 2, and Advance 3 boss levels, Huge Crisis from Sonic Rush, Pirates' Island from Sonic Rush Advance, fight Blaze from Sonic Rush then unlock her to play outside of story mode, and finish it off with Planet Wisp from Sonic Colors, a new level call White Space Zone from Sonic Generations, fight the Death Egg Robot from Sonic 4 part 1 as the final boss, have a Special Stage where we need to fight Fang the Sniper in a Sonic Triple Trouble style battle, then battle against Time Eater from Sonic Generations as the Extra Boss, and as an award to beating the game with S rank, we should get classic Knuckle and classic Metal Sonic skin if we earn 20% S rank, SA3 G-merl skin and Metal Sonic 3.0 skin if earn 40% S ranks, Ultimate Emerl to play in Time Eater extra boss outside of story mode if 50% of S ranks is earned, Hyper Knuckles for the use for Time Eater extra boss outside of story mode if 60% of S ranks is earned, Super Silver for the use in Time Eater extra boss outside of story mode if 70% of S ranks is earned, Super Shadow for the use in Time Eater extra boss outside of story mode if 80% of S ranks is earned, Burning Blaze for the use in Time Eater extra boss outside of story mode if 90% of S ranks is earned, and playing as Fang the Sniper in the use outside of story mode if 100% of S ranks (including Special Stage ranks) on every stage. I believe this would be more fun and truly makes the 3DS version of Sonic Generations better. It would be nice to see the return of the character selection and gameplay from Sonic Rush again so we can play two different stories of Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic.

ah yes, the only version of sonic generations I've ever got to play, given how all the games outside of sonic are pretty much nintendo only, and thus... I had ta skip the console versions, or slap down insane amounts of cash just for one game. still, the 3ds version isn't incredible, but still a solid simple experience.

This game definitely feels like a rush-job, and some act 1 levels feel like Sonic 4 level design, which is never a good thing. It makes me wonder if Dimps forgot how to make Classic Sonic levels. I mean, Sonic Advance was pretty good, and it didn't rely on homing attacks and long stretches of just holding right. But now the only Act 1 levels that don't require the homing attack are just remasters of old levels. What happened there? Overall, I enjoyed the game as a kid, but I can't help but feel like the game feels kind of... inconsistent, especially compared to the console game. Like, why are there 3 classic levels, but only two for the remaining eras? Why is Egg Emperor a modern era boss when his game is in the Dreamcast era in the console version? Why does Egg Emperor get to be in the game, but not a level from Sonic Heroes? Why did they give up on Act 1 remixes in the Modern era? The entire game is inconsistent like that.
