Honestly maybe i'm getting too old for current trends but while I respect your guys gig, I never understand why the "alone in a game world" is a trend. Like, yeah, it's the game, without anything in it. Some broken assets here and there, broken music. but yeah, that's it. It doesn't feel creepy for me, just feels unfinished.

That's fair enough. This was my first shot at anything creepy in a Sonic game, so I didn't intend this hack to be a smash hit anyway, I just wanted to try my hand at analogue horror and existential horror.

i think you're generally right about this and i say this as a relatively young? gamer (20 years old). a lot of what instills the horror about being alone in a game isn't the sole fact of being alone i'd say-it also usually has to do with the environment's lighting & shadows, and the ambience or atmosphere of the given environment. i think a lot of source engine maps accomplish this well in a subtly effective albeit sometimes unintentional manner, which is probably why you see them often used in new gen horror content, but i also think a lot of newer maps and games trying to emulate the feelings of these environments end up trying too hard in its tropes while not understanding the essence of what makes an empty environment start to feel oppressive; they start to think being alone in a game that looks unfinished is what's scary when that isn't the case. this also isn't to say that i'm critiquing this particular rom hack, i think this was a good start even if i would've taken some different artistic directions. just adding that i agree with what you're saying about emptiness not necessarily being scary
