"Sonic Mania is my favourite Saturn game"

Sonic Mania with... a lot to describe. A loading screen, some faked lag and small little edits and tweaks (and issues) to make the game appear more saturn-esque... through a VHS too (via ntsc-rs again), and it's a demo version!
I first recorded Sonic Mania with no music through OBS at 640x480, using the same technique as my last VHS video to emulate s-video color bleed. I then edited it a tonne in VEGAS Pro 18, exported just the sfx at 22050hz and used dBlue Crusher to make it sound a bit crunchy before re-exporting everything out AGAIN with the SFX and music and applying a faked VHS noise filter to create this. Put it all together and it's nice, just excuse KZbin absolutely decimating the quality of the video because it's 480p and I didn't feel like waiting 2 hours for it to re-render through VEGAS at 1080p.
There's a moment when the invisibility music just doesn't come in- this isn't a 'mistake' per se, but rather just laziness because the ogg itself from Sonic Mania would end up crashing VEGAS Pro if I even dragged it 6px near the window. Just pretend the game doesn't have invis music for a bit more reality.

From a person who owns a Saturn, the loading times are longer, for example after you beat or lose a 3D Blast special stage you will die of old age before you get back into the game.

Anyway, 3D Blast is arguably better on the Mega Drive. I personally prefer the soundtrack on MD. With RGB cables it looks fantastic. Edit: but you’re right.

I definitely think that the game could run on Saturn, but I don't think a port could ever be viable without huge rewrites of code for optimisation purposes which at that point... rewriting it from Scratch in its own custom engine would probably be more viable.

New 3DS* because the developers abandonned old 3ds users. Power isn't an excuse because there's someguy porting Sonic Mania to the Dreamcast. So old 3ds can handle this game without any problem.

@@retroboy-fh1ji Fun fact, the Dreamcast is a different console and as such the RSDK decomp is being heavily optimised for it. It's technically possible for Old 3DS, but from my own experience running the game in Old 3DS mode, load times are about 5 minutes and the game averages around 10 frames per second.

August of 1995 huh? 😆😆 It is believable that this game would've been well received if it was released over 25 years ago. But Sega had no choice but to adapt Sonic into the 32-bit era...and fast before Sony & Nintendo would've swept them during the new era of cd based technology.

The loading times wouldn't be this high. Saturn has a lot of VRAM so the next act can be loaded when the score is getting tallied up. Compression can be used to speed up loading (As loading uncompressed data from the drive is slower than loading compressed data and decompressing). The music would be the same quality as the original. The sound effects would be higher quality as the Saturn's YMF292 sound chip can natively use FM synthesis

@@dustytux Oh absolutely, I definitely think in execution you could make Saturn Sonic Mania be 1:1 to how the actual game is with several tricks- I just was acting like they weren't known about or existed at the time this would have been made. Music wise I think it likely would have been very close (maybe stored at a lower audio quality just because of the sheer amount of songs) but I think the sfx are a hit or miss as depends on how they would want to have handled them. I just did them like this because it was easier lol

@@Xenon_XTH No Saturn game has music as MP3. Most games used raw PCM audio and some games used ADPCM audio (like CRI ADX ADPCM). The Saturn is too weak to decode MP3. But it can decode MP2 (MPEG Audio Layer II) with the help of the MPEG VCD card. If someone remade the music as Saturn chiptune music, then there wouldn't be a need to load the boss music
