The difference between Ted and Smoovies, Ted can't justify his reasons on disliking the game many times. Smoovies actually is able to and pretty clearly at that. That's why he gets less hate. Smoovies is just a bit OCD that's all.
@GameSharks7 жыл бұрын
Ted isn't terribly good at expressing himself. He can say things I 100% agree with and I still end up confused because of how he approaches it. It's not that he can't justify it though, he has internal reasoning, he just struggles with externalizing it

0:52 Now this is the main difference between Ted and Smoovies. Whereas Ted says things like "if I have to deal with all of you liking this game, you have to deal with me hating it", Smoovies understands and respects that other people have differing opinions and admits that he could just be cynical. That's why, I think, Smoovies won't get as much hate as Ted.
@Neogears13125 жыл бұрын
he's also just more charismatic. like when both just say a bs reason for hating a game, ted comes off as a whiny bitch who doesnt know what he's talking about, where as smoovies has the charisma to make sound like hes a stand up comedian ripping into it like we're all on board with the joke.

Speed isn't a reward in Sonic, fluidity is. There are segments in Sonic where you are specifically meant to 'go fast' and there are also parts where you can slow down for more precise platforming. However if you are good at the levels, you can combine the two and beat the level faster. Also I get the argument that 'having to learn the levels isn't good design' but I think the game makes up for it in most cases because getting hit isn't as fatal as it is in Mario, as long as you have rings and/or a shield. There is a lot more room for error in Sonic is basically what I'm trying to say.
@SegaSky7 жыл бұрын
Alex Walsh I'd say speed and fluidity go hand in hand, because part of the appeal in classic Sonic is trying to figure the quickest way to beat the level. The best (non-glitch) speedruns usually look incredibly smooth - slower sections included - because of it.
@Stitchlips20002 жыл бұрын
I agree, speed just kinda comes naturally with playing the game, that's why the ring system exists. It's a safety net to incentivise you to experiment and get better at the game and get better at maintain speed and looks fly as fuck!

15:30 Ummm, i think you are misunderstanding what "Speed is a reward" means(Or at less how i use it), getting Sonic to be fast isn't hard in any Sonic game, but it should be the challenge, it's keeping this speed going and getting more speed. To do this, you need to have obstacles, and stuff like that, that tries to stop you from getting more speed. And how you raise above this challenges, maybe the way you go to get around it slows you down, so you need a different tactic, maybe it allows you to keep the same speed, maybe it allows you to go faster. Or maybe the slow way allows you to find a path that if you arrive to this area from another path, you can take it, you avoid the challenge, and keep the speed going. It's like racing games(Not Mario Kart that it's more luck then skills), you can't just push the accelerator button constantly, you need to find the right amount of time, to do other techniques that slows you down, but if done right, with the correct timing, all of this allows you to go faster.

At this point, whether Smoovies' rage is genuine or troll-y, I just think it's hilarious how over the top he gets. As for his arguments, I agree with some points, but then I also think these problems are either nitpicky af or are fundamental 'problems' that all classic sonic games face so I don't get why he gets so mad at this game specifically but eh. (At least he can back his hate with proper reasons. Not to hate on Ted, but his arguments were confusing at best, whiney at worst.)
@SabreOfficial7 жыл бұрын
speed is a reward = you can do the levels more efficiently (faster) once you learn them that's really it ... that said though, there are still points in the classic games where you can enjoy how fast sonic goes without having to know the level layout, but for the most part the satisfaction comes from being able to play the levels more fluently and maintaining momentum once you're familiar with how the level is laid out. "going fast" is mainly used as an incentive (and encourages repeated playthroughs), hence speed being a reward. so yeah, you can still go fast in sonic games without knowing em back and forth. it's just that when people talk about speed being a reward in sonic games, they're usually talking about being able to play the levels more efficiently once you learn em. hope that made at least some sense, also this playthru is really fuckin funny so far LOVE U GUYS

well no, the argument is that you're rewarded for playing well with speed, when really it's the reverse. You use speed to play well. Often times the fastest routes involve actually slowing down for a second
@dasirrlicht54157 жыл бұрын
But you don't advertise with the reward of the game! That's... That's... That is like when Portal would advertise itself as baking-simulator! Or Mario would be advertised as: "Get a kiss on the nose. And Cake." I mean, it being a reward MAKES SENCE. But Sega is just terrible at times, down to outright stupid. And in what way is it rewarding to run into a convinient placed unforseeable SOMETHING? Go fast-Run in Spikes! Go fast-Bottomless Pit! Go fast-Enemy-Bullet! Go fast-Water! 5...4...3... (Also, why add a mechanic thats sole purpose is TO TAKE THE REWARD AWAY, EVEN WHEN YOU DO EVERYTHING RIGHT? Water is so slow...) 2... (And then wait for a bubble...) 1... (Not that it ever comes in time...) Go fast-SPRING! Now you are all the way back! Go fast-Camera can't keep up with you (But given, that is actually ok) For a Reward-Mechanic, SEGA does a bad Job. Oh, and in evry sonicgame MADE by Sonic-Team this days, they hand Speed out like candy, if you want it or not, with endless amounts of boosters... And given their history with Level-Design, Speed is less a reward then a threat, a harzard you are trying to AVOID half the time... ... (I need to do something about my habbit to '...' ...)
@GameSharks7 жыл бұрын
what you're describing is called "hazards" Mario can jump into pits if you're bad at it. Or spikes. Or anything. The challenge of the game is using the core mechanics well. Sonic is explicitly designed to mitigate the problems that come from going fast with the ring system. All you need is one, and you drop liek twenty when you get hit, so you can make a lot of mistakes, running into spikes isn't a big deal
@dasirrlicht54157 жыл бұрын
In nearly every place you can jump and at worst you just look like a idiot, but it usually doesn't harms you. It is a proper used gameplaymechanic. Sonic got it, too. And that is all it is, a mechanic. Speed, on the other hand, is more harmfull then helpfull. The Hazard that hurts you would be easyly avoidable if you wouldn't speed trough the level, makeing speed part of the problem, but not of the solution. The only point you NEED speed is usually to get trough loops. Jumping can be used to avoid most other hazards you enconter, speed usually amplifies the danger. Speed makes, with our given Leveldesign (usually Sonic-Team), a poor reward. And that you need a Mechanic to make it less harmfull to speed along makes it a even worse reward... The frustration of getting stoped by something is usually worse then the high from haveing the speed in the first place. Also, you only drop a many rings as you have, and the 'single ring' saveguard happens to jump away in your hitstun... Of course, you can try to get it, but for the short time between hitstun and the disaperance of the ring, you are in a area with a hazard. Ring lays on Spikes, Enemy fires again, ectra... While Speed, as a gameplaymechanic, works, It makes (in combination with the leveldesign) just for a terrible reward, and as that was it marketed. While i can accept speed as a essencial part of sonics design, the fixation with it being the fun part of it and the part you are supposed to be happy about is simply frustrating, since the game does little to make you happy about being fast.

@nezumi65547 жыл бұрын
This comment isn't directed at Smoovies, but more so anyone who gets really uptight about a video game's design, but also my defenses for why speed still is an award. I think that speed CAN be achieved by a first-time player, but when they mess up, the ring system acts as a net to keep them doing okay. When they get better at the game, they don't need the ring system because at that point they can master the controls and level design. I won't say something like Mario isn't good either, I just find gaining the ability to grasp the tight controls and blast through levels that previously gave me trouble is more fun and satisfying to me. I don't think it has to be like an argument about politics or religion, where everyone is yelling at each other violently about what they believe. If you don't want to play a game where you memorize level design to pass through levels at blistering speeds, THEN DON'T! Nobody is forcing you to play it! Also there are sections in Sonic games where they allow the player to go fast in a safe environment, like the tubes in Chemical Plant, the rings/loops (not sure what their actual name is) in Death Egg Zone, running down the building in Speed Highway, the rocket in Metal Harbor, the giant S-tube in Green Hill Zone that launches you into the air, etc.

i don't mind not being able to hit metal till you reach the top. but i can understand where smoovies is coming from in a way. you can see it later with one of the bosses later on. maybe if they had made metals sprite go in front and behind the pathway and/or have him look like hes getting closer and further away i could see that working. but once you know you can't hit him you kind of know there more to the fight at that point. With the press garden act 2 ice part. if you look before the first checkpoint unless you were to break straight out of the ice block you are shown you can break ice blocks and ice spikes and such with the ice block mechanic. i had no problems after this part knowing you can break certain ice blocks both vertically and horizontally with the ice mechanic Other things like rewarding the player to go fast. you do get rewarded with more points beating the stage. if the game was always built around speed though the design would not work more so with the older games. so they have to put traps and platforms to kind of slow the pace a little bit and to add hazards and danger to a stage. otherwise they would have to make stages much longer to work with it and considering green hill act 1 in the first game took 30 seconds which is the most basic go fast level the game would be beaten in such a quick time if they had done that for the game. or make the levels longer which would take space, take time and such
@GoldStorm077 жыл бұрын
The point about not teaching level mechanics fluidly enough stands, that's the same thing that makes the Carnival Night barrel annoying. In general with this game tho, I just don't feel like the game punishes you for speed any more than Sonic 2 or 3 does, and certainly less than Sonic 1. I cannot think of many points in the game that fuck me over for going fast. As a final point, speed as a reward has been less of a hard rule with Sonic as time goes on, ever since the Spindash let you go fast whenever you want and Sonic's other tricks let you maintain flow. The Drop Dash even moreso. So...yeah, you can go fast whenever you want, but if you have poor reaction speed it can be troublesome. Typically the size of the screen gives you an acceptable margin of error for those reactions so it's all good.

To be fair Smoovies, there's a clear distinction between the sections where you run up the tower (where you can't hit him) and the final section (where you can). The fact that Metal Sonic isn't on the same plane in the initial sections could have been telegraphed better, but there's a section in the game that's far worse. how nice of you to invite SammyClassicSonicFan to this let's play but yeah the Metal Sonic fight is sorta inconsistent with the rules of when you can whack him
@Artista_Frustrado7 жыл бұрын
as for the Speed = reward thing, the reward is not just going fast since all of Sonic's moves just give you the go fast, the actual reward is being able to keep that speed for the entire level & yeah there's no good reason for the 3 movements (Peel out, Drop Dash & Insta Shield) to not be mapped to separate buttons, the Genesis controllers had 3 buttons. limiting them to move replacements in the no-save file is pretty dumb & i hope they fix that in mania 2

Mistuh Smoovies is right, there's a bunch of things in this game I would have probably never figured out if I hadn't watched a bunch of random videos

Gonna get a lot of hate for this but the Drop Dash is just meh i never bothered with it if i needed to use it then hello Spin Dash also Oil Ocean and Hydrocity can get stuffed in a tube and tossed out into space without a Chaos Emerald the game as a whole however isn't too bad shame we never got Death Egg Zone, Doomsday Zone or Hyper Sonic

King J yeah poor him trying to make a good game(just because it’s a sonic game) look bad then failing miserably then going crazy I think he deserves it

I used to like Metal Sonic. but after a while I realized how blank of a character he is. he's the least interesting of Sonic's rivals. He was interesting in Sonic Heroes. but that's the only game were he actually has a personality.

No it isn't...it's the only game where he can speak.

Press Garden Act 2 is the best looking level in the game but I have to say mechanically I do find it one of the worst. Has a lot of annoyingly placed badniks and the ice gimmick can be obnoxious sometimes.

I pretty f*cking sure that if there was Sonic game where sonic just runs really fast in every level without in level of difficulty or any challenging obstacles to stop sonic's speed, this screaming grown ass man who is screaming about a video game would hate, bitch and moan about a game like that too. I like the channel don't get me wrong but Smoovies you can just like you know...go away for a while. Like a long time...maybe forever?
