I totally agree with Mike's speech at the end; during the 5th Generation, I also saw everyone going crazy over these new 3D graphics and gameplay that I thought were pretty bad, even back then. I remember worrying that that was what video games were going to be from then on, and my SNES was still seeing a lot more playtime than my N64. Devil May Cry was the first 3D Action title that made me feel like there was hope again, so I'm glad they finally got it right, but it's still nice to see 2D games coming out.

Blue Sphere was always hard. I didn't have that much trouble with them in Mania but only because I played them alot getting the emeralds in Sonic 3 as a kid an more recently when replaying Sonic 3 in preparation for Mania's launch. I can see why they are frustrated with them but honestly every goalpost in this game is a blue sphere entrance. So it's MUCH easier to practice them than it was in Sonic 3 where they were the limited entrance giant rings.

Ryan (and Mike, too, exceptionally) has an excellent point about the graphics. This game looks beautiful. Excluding the emerald chasing mini-game, there are no polygons in this game. It is like improved graphics of the original Mega Drive games, all done in 2D sprites. What baffles me is that this game could have been released for Sega Saturn or Sony PlayStation, but sadly, like Mike pointed out, no game developer wanted to create 2D platformers when those consoles were new, even though they were most suitable for them. I have waited for a long time a game like this - a 2D platformer that consists from sprite graphics which surpass all games of Mega Drive and SNES (except possibly Donkey Kong Country games), and the fact that it happens to be an old-style Sonic game is a nice bonus. Just looking Sonic's animation shows me how much effort was put into the graphical presentation. I hope that similar games will be released more in the future - 2D games with as beautiful sprite graphics as it is possible to utilize with the platform.

The 3D blue ball and red ball bonus zone what you need to do is outline the blue balls and they will turn all of them red and you clear that block. So just trace the outline of each group of blue and red balls (touch only the blue balls) and that's how you clear it ;)

I think that the real reason that the Sonic games get so much negativity isn't because of the quality; It's because of the characters being anthropomorphic animals instead of humans, which is a shame because I honestly like anthro animal characters a lot more than most human characters for some reason, and there aren't any other video game series other than Sonic for me to enjoy with those kinds of characters nowadays.

@Goofy89077 жыл бұрын
Its interesting, I am really not a big fan of them, however they are ok I think. But I like it a lot more when the checkpoint posts give you random stages(or were they based on ring amount, can't remember exactly although I know Blue Spheres were for emeralds before) like the bubble gum machine and Sonic & Knuckles weird...jump on spheres in a weird electro generator thingy. Also, Sonic 2's stages were probably the best when doing VS, they were so much fun! They sucked for emeralds though, because they got really hard towards the end. Sonic 1 had cool stages too. The new chase the spaceship stages are probably the most fun yet, at least for emeralds. For the next Sonic Mania 2, they should give you different stages based on rings when getting the flag post.

If you collected 50 rings before hitting the checkpoint, you woud get sparks you could jump into to collect a chaos emerald through a minigame. After collecting all chaos emeralds and collecting 50 rings in any stage, you can turn into super sonic by topping jump twice. This works from sonic 2 in the Genesis onward.

Realistic graphics are not a direct improvement to pixelated ones, but an alternative. These are two distinct qualities that can coexist (such as in rotoscoped pixelated animation). The ultimate question is, is pixelized low res art obsolete as a stylization. As someone with 0 nostalgia (grew up with the PS2), I can tell you no style is ever obsolete, everything has it's own strengths and weaknesses. What is however likely to become obsolete or at the very least rare is simplistic pixel art, as many of the less visually impressive oldies have. In that sense I think old games, as they were, are doomed to fade into obscurity. But regardless of how nostalgic you are, rationally, you shouldn't cling to inferior quality as a "feature" of classic games. I am certain all of their merits will survive.

I loved those chaos emerald stages where you run through the blue balls in Sonic and Knuckles. I found them to be easy. You just need fast reflexes and some familiarity with the stage layouts.

I love how they're asking for Streets of Rage and Shinobi, these are both referenced within Mania's levels themselves lol.

Puyo Pop / Puyo Puyo was released on SFC and MD in Japan by developer Compile. The Puyo characters were taken out for the US, with Kirby in the SNES version (Kirby's Avalanche) sold by Nintendo, and Dr. Robotnik and the cartoon characters/ style in Sega's release.
