Go look up “Hard Times” by the Jetzons. It is ice cap zone. (This song was made a long time ago but not released until recently… and it’s not a coincidence as the keyboardist from this band helped with the sonic 3 soundtrack back in the day.) Unfortunate thing of the matter is that the very reason these original songs were so amazing is the same reason they can’t use them anymore. Really wish Sega would actually go after the rights to use the originals again, but I’m guessing that would be expensive so I bet they never will. When sonic origins was announced I thought perhaps they had finally done it and that perhaps that’s why the price tag was so high for the collection. Glad I didn’t spring on a purchase.

I have the scientific reason. The prototype tracks you're hearing here are from the PC version, you can hear it from the too high quality drum samples and the different FM synth used. The Origins versions instead remastered the original prototype versions on the genesis chip, and I have read that Jun Senue worked on this still for the Genesis chip. Basically Origins remasters the tracks from the genesis chip while still staying on its limitations, while the versions of the tracks you're hearing in this video are from the PC release version which has a completely different and more advanced sound system. If you have a basic knowledge in chiptune you can definetly hear that the prototype versions heard on this video are not coming from a genesis due to the sample quality and FM sound. This doesn't justify Origins at all, it just makes its creators also dumb other than greedy and lazy. For real other than music stuff, they forced Origins on bilinear filtering with no graphics options. Like WTF man how could they be so fucking lazy to not add pixel perfect or even a cheap scanline filter? The developers of Origins, both audio and visuals, are not only greedy and lazy... but retarded as hell! If you have a basic knowledge on videogames and music you can definetly see the scam in Origins. If you have a device that can emulate the classics, with the countless fan mods available there is no reason for a sane human to play Origins instead of those.

The Origins renditions of those tracks sound a LOT like generic melodies made with GENS or a MIDI playing a Mega Drive soundfont. Furthermore, the sound is kinds “muffled” (MegaDrive 2 vibes ;-)). The original prototype music at least made good use of the YM2612 and the SN76489 and sounds like the composers put some actual effort into it. They were able to bring out the rather “gritty” sound of the Mega Drive pretty well. The original tracks by MJ however, found in the 1994 release of the game, are in a league of their own. Especially Carnival Zone.

While the original prototype songs from the 90's aren't as loved as the "MJ" tunes that ended up in the final game, Sega should've NEVER asked Yun Senoue to redo the prototype tracks. While many people knew some of the original tracks would be removed fom Origins, it was still tough to accept the fact that Sega would be using the prototype songs. If that wasn't enough, we ended up getting slapped in the face once more, by Jun Senoue completely destroying the prototype tracks. It is beyond me why Sega couldn't just use the original prototype tracks and call it a day. Taking into consideration how much Sega messed up with each new Sonic title during the years, it almost makes me wonder if the higher ups at Sega intentionally want to keep messing around and doing this in purpose.

@Sega United I've been with this franchise since 1992 and very aware of what has happened during these decades. You have no clue what you are talking about. The tracks that were in the PC game, were MIDI VERSIONS of the prototype tracks. The songs that we have on Origins, are newly recomposed by Jun Senoue, using the Mega Drives Yamaha sound chip. There are already better versions out there using the Yamaha soundchip, but for some reason Sega decided not to use them. This is the exact reason why people have been disappointed. So again, this was a major mistake/ misconception on your part. The songs on Origins are NOT directly ripped from the PC game. Needless to say, Jackson was DISATISFIED with the fruits of his labor and HATED the Prototype compositions. He felt they results were poor and beneath what he was capable of. He hated the way the chip was making his music sound ultimately stepping down as Lead Composer. Jackson decided to bring on Brad Buxer and Drossin(To handle the Sound Programming) and stayed on the side as Conducer until Early 1994 when Jun Senoue joined SEGA, and was hired to bring in a Full Japanese Sound Engineering and Programming Team to handle the rest of the game's Soundtrack(Sonic 3 and Knuckles). Origins uses Unreleased, and Unused Tracks from S&K Collection PC that SEGA rejected in late '96 citing them as "Too Offbeat" and "Too Otherworldly", these are files lifted directly from the OLD SFGHQ Circles of the Early 2000s. In those Circles, alot of the Sonic & Knuckles' PC Collection soundtrack was freely distributed and unlicensed, and many Sonic Fan games from this time frequently used them and often remixed them with MIDI Compositions.

Now that I've kinda had time to process this news and replayed these tracks a few times back-to-back, I can actually see what they were trying to do (but it just ended up not working, because as it turns out, everyone is used to hearing the Sonic 3 prototype versions). In Carnival Night Zone Act 1 and 2, it sounds like they transposed the song to be in the same key as the Michael Jackson track, and they made the instrumentation more similar to the MJ track. It seems like they were trying to find a good balance between the Sonic 3 prototype music, and the final MJ version. Ice Cap Zone Act 1 and Act 2 actually sound mostly the same as the versions in the Sonic 3 prototype (though a bit more "mufflled"sounding for some reason). But I think these are actually the most tolerable remixes in Sonic Origins. Launch Base Zone is a different story, however-- I never really felt that Act 1's prototype music fit with that level, and the intro is horrible in my opinion.... But Sonic Origins actually somehow managed to make it sound even _worse._ Launch Base Zone Act 2 sounds a little better than Act 1, but not by a whole lot. You can't even hear the melody because it's overpowered by the harmonizing instruments. The prototype versions of these tracks definitely sound way better. Honestly, the good news here is that it's not too late at all to fix this. It's a super easy fix and Sega can push it in a new update for the game. Hopefully they will do that.

Just an absolute travesty for anyone who played the original as a kid. OG versions are simply irreplaceable. IMO Carnival Night was ruined. The OG had that hip-hop DJ vibe that just slapped. Probably would have been ok with Ice Cap Prototype had the OG never graced my ears. Launch Base Act II Origins/Prototype was actually pretty dope, so I might have sacrificed that one if I had zero choice. Lastly, all the Origins versions sounded compressed and muddled. They should have just polished the '94 Prototypes...yet somehow that effed that up, too. Someone please bless me with a way to play the original "lock on" Sonic 3 and Knuckles port on my Xbox One...please...

The prototype songs for Ice Cap are incorrect. These aren't from the actual prototype but rather from a fan remastering which has a lot of differences.

Creepy video game music themes - Season 1 EP 1 - the creepiest Sonic origins themes for Sonic 3
@original__gmebvy2 жыл бұрын
I’m gonna say it: they should have had Tee Lopes redo the soundtracks for all 3 stages. It would have still stung by not having the original ones but it would have turned out a hell of a lot better than whatever tf Sega ended up doing. Sonic Origins is really an example of a company royally fucking up and someone telling them, “Yooooo my dude seriously how theeeeeeee fuck did you screw this up so bad?!?” I ended up canceling my preorder for this game once I found out just how bad the music situation with this game turned out. I have the originals I grew up on that I bought and can play on my Xbox One X just before they got delisted.

Carnival Night Zone..yeah that is underwhelming, especially with how much more interesting the Prototype is. I think people give the new Ice Cap a bit too much flak. If I had any real problems with it, the first couple of seconds would be it. That aside, I think the song suffices. And Launch Base…yeah there’s just no defending that one. It *kinda* sounds like something I can digest a little later on but way too late for it to matter. While a perfect world would grant us the ability to have the original soundtracks across all platforms, I think SEGA could totally salvage this with Carnival Night’s Prototype, touching up Ice Cap, and just straight up redoing Launch Base.

I think the Origins songs are serviceable. It’s always gonna be hard to try and top the King of Pop’s music, and that’s not necessarily the fault of the new tracks because those are big shoes to fill. Doesn’t ruin the entire package imo; we’ll always have the original tracks online and elsewhere it’s not like they’re gone forever, just officially they’re gonna missed.
