Sonic Pocket Adventure - Sonic Was Always Good

Three minor things I left out of the video.
While the NGPC has a very narrow screen, it's actually not a problem. Sonic is small enough that he doesn't take up too much of the screen, and the screen pans ahead to give you more time to see what's coming. It actually feels very similar to the amount of visibility that you get in the Genesis games.
The spindash in this game has a small problem. You can't press down and jump at the same time to start charging. Doing that will make you jump. If you ever see me randomly jump in place, I'm trying to spindash. Needing a slight pause between down and jump messes with my muscle memory so much. Not great. This affects the peelout as well.
Also, Knuckles isn't totally finished in Pocket Winter. You'll see some of his sprites he turns into Sonic. And he can't climb walls. Still cool, but unfortunate. In the end, I wouldn't recommend Pocket Winter. Just play the normal game.

I'm really glad to see the game getting covered as someone who actually owns an NGPC! It really is a nice old time, and I'm real glad I discovered it before the prices for it started to go up. Of course emulation is always an option, but I do just enjoy enjoy owning the original copies of games when I get the chance. Although I should definitely try out Sonic Pocket Winter at some point. I'd really love to play through the game as Tails and Knuckles. Honestly just the fact that there's even a ROM hack out for this game amazes me, especially one that went as far as Sonic Pocket Winter did, even with it being unfinished. I vividly remember deciding to go for the platinum ranks in the time attack mode. Even though I don't usually play Sonic games for the time attack, it was still really fun to go through the whole thing. Those times sure were strict, but gosh when I got the perfect run on the perfect route it was so satisfying. Although I haven't really done it for the advanced mode just because of all the extra factors with routing and all that. Although I never considered it like it being a run where you can get a chaos emerald while still speeding through the game. That's certainly a neat way to look at it. You also nailed the exact thing I would want with the puzzle pieces. I mean I did like them being there. They were really fun to find, but those last ones can be a pain when you've already searched through the levels so extensively. I did eventually find them all with the help of a video guide, but I see that someone already posted one of those in the comments. Though I can at least link download with pictures of all the level maps that mark where the puzzle pieces are just in case that's easier to deal with. I can understand mistaking it for an 8 bit system based on the visuals, but I like to think of it as an inverse scenario to the Turbografx 16/PC Engine where that sure looks 16 bit, but it's actually 8 bit. It'd certainly explain how it was able to handle a much better recreation of the classic Sonic physics, as well as be a powerhouse when it came to portable fighting games. I do actually have a copy of Pocket Adventure. And I did have a NGPC at a time. But it was pretty beat up and hardly usable. Thanks for the info on the NGPC being 16-bit. Didn't know that.

It's an easy thing to assume about the game because of the way it played out and the timing of the whole thing. Maybe it's true someone created an unsubstantiated-but-plausible headcanon and everyone ran with it as the truth for too long, but it's easy to see why it's so believable, considering the nature of the game as a sort of Sonic 2 Remix released a few weeks after Sonic Adventure, with this mix of the classic and modern design, Eggman changing into his outfit at the very end of the game, and whatnot, like it's the swansong of the classic era.

Just to say, the ranks in generations are almost entirely based on time like you can finish with no rings or enemies defeated if you want and still get an s as long as its deathless and fast.

@@ChaddyFantome I say that is more of an issue with to low requirements. Unleashed SD and Advance 3 are entirely time based ranking system yet its not nearly as easy to get S Ranks and Goal goal rings in these games compared to Generations A and S ranks.

I do think it is fair to assume that Pocket Adventure is a transition between classic and modern and there's one more evidence for it: the fact that Mecha Sonic showed up here with his Sonic 2 design, which is exactly the one we see in the Egg Carrier, suggesting that that was the latest design Eggman used for Mecha Sonic. If Pocket Adventure didn't have that purpose, then the Mecha Sonic we see in the Egg Carrier would have been the Sonic 3&K one. So I guess in the modern dimension it goes more or less like this: Sonic 3 > Sonic & Knuckles > Sonic Pocket Adventure > Sonic 4 Ep 1 > Sonic 4 Ep Metal > Sonic 4 Ep 2 > Sonic Adventure 1...

I think you're looking into that way too much. Mecha Sonic has the Sonic 2 design because the game takes a lot of stuff from Sonic 2. I doubt there's anything more to it than that.

Probably an uncommon pick. My favorite look for Sonic is the Classic Sonic drawn by Kieran Gates. He did some of the art for Mania, and I think it is absolutely perfect. That's why I used that for my Best Version of Every Sonic Game video. The best version of Sonic.

I'd argue that SA1 Sonic is a pretty faithful translation of the Genesis gameplay, minus the branching paths and with more automation due to technical limitations. The beta version of Windy Valley is the closest an official 3D Sonic level has been to replicating the style of the original trilogy.

It's weird that no one ever talks about this, but we actually _did_ get a faithful translation of Genesis-style gameplay in 3D, in 1999 no less. But it wasn't from Sonic; it was in the form of the Tony Hawk series. Yeah, play with the physics of the THPS games, ratchet up the speed but in custom parks made for it, and it feels exactly like what you'd hope a 3D Genesis Sonic would be, Now that does require some bit of fiddling and tweaking, but it's actually completely doable. Thing is, Sonic Adventure was finished and released by the time THPS 1 came out. Twice, in fact! Not just in Japan, but even 9/9/99 was a good two weeks before THPS1's release. Sonic Team had no way of knowing the physics engine for a proper 3D Genesis-esque Sonic game had been made, and they probably never even played the game. Even if they did, I feel it was a good call to focus on spectacle platforming in Adventure 2; the bad call was more divvying up the game into other gameplay styles.

Just checked again. You're right. There is no roll lock here. Whoops. It was a while ago that I recorded this so I mixed it up with Advance. I'll pin a comment to correct this. As for Advance, technically having the roll lock makes it more accurate to the Genesis games. It might be a bad feature, but if they wanted to be faithful it makes sense they'd want to add that.

You seem to get hung up on the details on what is and isn’t intended. Retroactively it makes sense why people would perceive this game as a bridge between two different eras of the series. Any actual canon becomes an absurd idea to begin with if you go down that route where only the intent at time of release matters. The intent is irrelevant, the question should be what does it function as currently. You do this essentially in a way with the mechanics through all the modding you use, so why not give credence to retroactive narrative adjustments. Of course intent is an interesting thing to know contextually but you’re allowed as a consumer to interpret a piece of art/media however you want. I think the bridge idea people put forth is a good one regardless of the original intent. Sorry if this was a weird thing to get nitpicky about in this video.

I understand what you mean. But as a writer myself, I do look for the creator's intent. That's what art is. Something a creator is trying to convey to an audience. The intent is what is actually supposed to be happening, so to me that is what is happening. This is why I dislike retcons, as it is disrespectful to previous intentions.

I think it's ironic that people refer to this as an 8-bit game; both the Neo Geo Pocket/Pocket Colour and its games are ALL 16-bit, as stated on packaging, game cartridge labels etc.

What do you mean by "roll lock"? I haven't heard that term.

It's feature in a lot of the older Sonic games. Your movement would be locked while rolling on the ground, so you'd have no control and would just be carried by momentum. And it would carry in to your jump until you hit the ground again and started running.
