📄 Sonic Riders is a 2006 racing video game for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox in which the player controls characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog series on hoverboards. In the game's 16 tracks, the player competes against characters-either controlled by computers or other players-in story and battle modes. It was developed by Sonic Team and Now Production, published by Sega, and released in February 2006 in Japan and North America. It was released in Europe the following month and for Windows at the end of the year. A Game Boy Advance version, developed by Backbone Entertainment, was canceled.
The game was produced in commemoration of the Sonic series' 15th anniversary and was the first Sonic racing game since the 1997 Traveller's Tales game Sonic R. Sonic Team wanted to make their own game that was superior to any previous Sonic racing game. It was designed to appeal to fans of Sonic and extreme sports video games; the development team did not take inspiration from any prior games. Sonic Riders was also the last Sonic title produced with the involvement of Yuji Naka, who left Sega shortly after its release.

While the GameCube and Xbox versions are better, I’m still impressed the PS2 version is able to stand toe to toe to both versions. Especially in comparison to the infamous PS2 ports for Heroes and Shadow.

Oh, man. The PS2 of Shadow was so hard to get through because of how poorly it ran. It did have the best image quality... but barely getting to 30fps most of the time was horrible. Shadow was definitely intended for Gamecube first, then the others second.

Gotta say, I prefer the way the character models look on Xbox. I'm never got why they insisted on making the character models so shiny and plastic looking around this era. They did it in SADX, Heroes and Shadow too and it just looks so weird and unnatural. Even the Extreme Gears are super shiny in the GC version, but I suppose that makes a little more sense.

Thankfully, Sonic Riders on PS2 is a much better port than the notorious Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog PS2 ports, since this version targets 60 FPS unlike those games which were locked at 30. Although, the 60 FPS target is not great because it often drops a lot during gameplay, but unlike the Heroes and Shadow PS2 ports, the performance is still at least acceptable. Now this is where things get very interesting. Surprisingly, the Xbox version happens to be the worst console version because the CGI cutscenes suffer from extreme choppiness (similar to the video choppiness in the Xbox version of SSX 3, but much worse) On top of that, it also seems like the cutscenes have display issues because the screen glitches out every half a second. These problems make the dialogue unintelligible, along with making the cutscenes unwatchable. I’ve searched this problem up on Google and there were players with the same issue. This is not an emulation issue either, as it occurs on original hardware as well. How this version was released in this state is beyond me. Even the PS2 version destroys the Xbox version in this regard. As far as the GameCube, PC, and PS2 versions go, I’d have to say the GameCube version is the most polished one due to its crisper textures and additional details not present in any other version, such as the more vivid lens flare effect that comes from the sun. Most importantly, however, the performance and the overall stability of the GameCube version is much more stable than the other versions, especially the flawed Xbox version. Even though the PS2 version still has its share of flaws in terms of FPS and texture quality, kudos to Sonic Team for actually making the PS2 version comparable to the GameCube version since those issues aren’t as apparent as the Heroes and Shadow PS2 ports. The PC version, however, lacks many of the visual effects seen in the console versions and it is also limited to 2 players only, so I’d say this is the worst version even though it doesn’t have the cutscene choppiness from the Xbox version.

First thing I noticed was the ceiling bars were jagged and overall environments were shaky on GC while PS2 looked smooth. Coins on GC and Xbox had more details. Audio is much better on GC and Xbox.

The gamecube version looks very bland with lightning that just removes the shadows. The PS2 version on the other hand looks very mediocre, it is a lot darker but still no perfect shadows. The Xbox version looks to have very similar lightning to Sonic '06 (that game had great lightning) which makes it better than both versions. The PC version has the same issues of the gamecube version but a bit better. For peformance, i'd choose the PC version.
