Edit: Also Eggman has designed and even BUILT machines the have been able to keep up with Sonic to some degree Metal Sonic is a prime example of this. Also we’ve never seen Sonic run at full speed in any of the games.

Sonic is going about 695mph, more then 800+ kph, meaning he’s going over the speed of sound. This blue blur can outrun a nuke with speeds on OVER 800 mph, but once engulfed in flames, he would burn, there is a 12% chance of him getting out and surviving, This TRUELY proves how fast sonic is.

Especially that in-game, contact with the fire costs Sonic up to 8 rings per second, meaning even triple-digit ring counts only delay death if he stays in there, and not even for 10 seconds. I also tried this with Super Sonic and it's worse with Super Sonic's already-existing ring drain of a ring per second, meaning Sonic would lose 9 rings per second and still die in the flames. If anything, Sonic is better off in base form in this situation.
