@@simpletonapollo9723 really, I found Lava Powerhouse and the Showdown to be harder than the Machine. I think of the Toxic Caves and the Machine to be the "easier" levels while Lava Powerhouse and the Showdown are the harder ones. I think the Machine is long and tedious and complicated in spots but it has fewer death traps than levels 2 and 4 and you're less likely to fall into those gears than the lava. At least we can agree that the Machine's boss isn't very hard though. The Showdown boss is a nightmare for me.

Granted I have not spend nearly that long as that on this game, but yeah, that stage is brutal, and I too have yet to beat it. I have a friend who has an amazing visual memory and is almost superhuman when it comes to fast paced games, decisions and movements (You should see him with the Sonic the hedgehog games, and even the minigames within, he can get all 7 emeralds and just practically lays waste to them, and trust me when I say that it was a real treat/a pure adrenaline rush just watching him play). Anyways, in Sonic Spinball, when he made it to this stage (His first time being there) he beat it with only losing a few of his lives...

Fifteen or so years later, and I still haven't beaten this level. Definitely the hardest Sonic game on the Genesis, and one of the hardest Sonic games ever. Sure, some of the 8-bit games are up there too, especially the 8-bit Sonic 2. End of the World and Eggmanland have nothing on The Showdown IMO.

Luckily Lava Powerhouse and The Machine (the two levels in between the first and final level) are a lot easier. The only way to die in those is to actually fall to the very bottom unlike Toxic Caves or... this level...
