The Sonic OVA was actually supposed to be a full-on anime TV series which is why it was scripted to have two pilot episodes, unfortunately it didn’t sell well in Japan so they decided to combine the two into a movie and call it a day.

Wasn't there also a 1995 film script/treatment where the plot was like a typical superhero origin story, except it was about a normal human teenager gaining the ability to transform into Sonic the Hedgehog as an alternate alias? Knowing Sony they wouldn't have done anything with the old design and we wouldn't have gotten 3. All the movies were great adaptations of the games and were rewatchable. Even though they lacked some things especially with the story telling with tails (which still bugs me) I loved them. Sonic 1, while not being a real faithful game to movie adaptation despite minor easter eggs here, was a good way to start things off.

I have to ask, why did you simply brush over Ben Hurst's SatAM film? The plans for it are available online (I made a whole documentary on it). I don't get why so many people talk about Ken's terrible film pitch rather than Ben's when his film plans really deserves more attention. I don't get why people always focus on Ken's project which sabotaged Ben's, but never Ben's own project, it's really sad to me.

I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYBODY SAYS! The Sonic OVA movie is the BEST Sonic movie! Nothing against the live action films, I like them too. And I am looking forward to Sonic Movie 3. But not even Sonic Movie 3 and future films are going to be that classic film for me! It's everything I want in a Sonic movie and how I imagine it would be! I personally would have been fine if the Sonic OVA was the only movie we had. If they continue a Sonic movie with more cartoon animations on the other hand, that's a different story. Again, nothing against the live action films, but I'll take a full animated film ANYDAY!

I have a controversial opinion that the SATAM characters don’t need to return at all to the mainline franchise. They had their time and it’s been done. Not to mention if any projects involving them actual moved forward. It would’ve been kind of jarring to the people who mainly play the games and suddenly see a character with no presence in the games but treated with major importance over the likes of some characters like Shadow, Knuckles, Tails and even Amy As the actual Japanese team doesn’t really like the American made characters of the 90s (the biggest tell is how the actual team was disappointed in the development of the canned SATAM game) And let’s say Sonic Team does have an interest in doing so, they would need to wrestle the rights for the SATAM characters out from wherever the rights of DIC went. Which is another hassle on its own Don’t get me wrong, I’m completely ok with the fan made sequel. And Sonic SATAM is a really solid show with effort It’s just that I think it’s delusional to have the belief that Sega would bring in those characters at any point And lastly, before any of you make any points about Ian Flynn. always take what he says with a grain of salt. He doesn’t get decide how the franchise goes.

They don’t need to replace the current cast, they could just rewrite the freedom fighters to fit modern Sonic. They don’t have to be accurate to SATAM or Archie. For example, the Guardians of the Galaxy characters in the films are nothing like the comics and they became one of Marvel’s most beloved teams. When people say bring them back they don’t mean replace characters like Amy and Shadow, they just want to see the characters come back in some form.

I still am not convinced that the first live Sonic design wasn't intentionally horrendous. A team of designers and test screenings, on top of many other aspects and someone would be like '👍'? It payed off in the end, so I guess it was worth the pain....
