Sonic Spirits is a fangame with a new art style and several new levels. A remake of Ocean Palace and Emerald Coast. Infinity Engine + made by TheFizzWizz, original engine by Oban.

Hi! Game creator here. I'm glad to see this is getting a lot of attention. It's been on and off in development for a full year now. I'll answer a few questions. Q. Looks kinda slow IMO. A. The youtuber was probably taking things slow. You can roll down slopes to gain speed. Q. When is this release? A. The 15th, via Gamejolt. Q. Why does this look so early? A. Because it is. This is a public test build. Q. ReMoVe CeL ShAdiNg A. It's called an "artstyle" and I don't wanna get "SHE'S USING UNREAL ENGINE... IN ANY WWAAYYYY SHE CAN!"''d. If you really have a problem with it, there'll be a setting to disable it. Q. "this looks bad change xyz" A. Nah Q. How many levels are there in the full demo? A. A tutorial, Dolphin Ocean, Emerald Coast, Altitude Limit, Deserted Ruins, Boss1 Q. "I don't like this" A. Don't play it Q. Is there a Discord? A. Yes, check the gamejolt page. Q. PixDev. Hey, I read your, About on your KZbin channel. You may make random videos and memes, but your definitely not a random person. With the knack to create fan games, and the mind to help others, you definitely got a lot to be proud of and look forward to. Keep the cel shading, its cool, and I know your gonna add a option to turn it off, but whenever I get the chance to play this, I'm keeping this Baby on!!! In my opinion the Infinity Engine doesn't work in levels with tight curves. Sonic is so fast that he needs big and open levels.

@@assaultapple6561 I have a simple solution for that problem. Just don't make the levels too spacious. Make them like Seaside Hill from Sonic Generations but a bit larger, I think that size is fine.

Why not just design sonic to deal with those scenarios better? Big open levels are fine an all but it runs the risk of being too spacious resulting in lack luster design at times. Not to say that’s gonna be the case all the time.

Mestre André Yes however this engine is weird in my opinion, the speed and physics makes it seem like a sonic adventure type game which is good however it has the stiff turning when boosting mixed in along with it, this creates a weird mix since if the levels are created in the adventure style sonic could just boost through it with ease and skip whole chunks of the stage however if it’s too spacious, the boost has to be used to get through the level faster but there is not much going on and has the risk of feeling empty. The skydive feature is also weird since this can be used to get so much distance while so high up thus allowing you to skip whole portions of the stages if created without the boost in mind, in my opinion the boost and skydive feature need to be removed for more freedom

The Infinity Engine doesn't work, period. It's Boost to Win garbage that relies way too much on floatyness and empty spaces.

Imo this is by far the best, most Sonic use of this engine yet. I am not a fan of how overly spacey the other Infinity Engine levels have been so this is a treat!!

well there was 4 levels in total, one didn't change at all, that was seaside hill, the sea of sand was also shown before, but it got new cell-shading. The two new levels were Ocean Palace and Emerald Coast

It could use a touch more rendering to make it less shiny in the first one, but I adore the level designs and how smooth it is. Shadow's level is INCREDIBLE!!! I saw a comment about Blaze, and I have to agree that she never really had a homing attack, but still overall I'd be happy to take it as is! Luv ya @SpiritDev

I absolutely ADORE the momentum and how you build up speed. It feels rewarding when you’re so fast because you took care enough to do so and plus you reap the benefits of being fast like running on water! I do have to say the homing attack is very floaty and really breaks the flow.

This game looks awesome and Im really really really excited to dump hours into playing it. From a game design perspective, it gives that “moving at sonic speed” that so many sonic games fail to achieve. The point about sonic is going fast and the game clearly seems to accomplish that. A large part of sonic is reacting quickly to things and your reward is a “fast path” where you gain/ keep your speed, and failing to react results in a “slow path” where you have to build up your speed again. The reward in sonic games is going fast and you guys have that down pact :) I love to see it! Two things that got me are the level direction and the placement of the rings. Shadows level had the best direction by far, with a clear path of where to go. But there are places like near the goal ring when you hear it and its like 50 meters above you. I probably wouldnt have found this for a bit. or the start of the blaze stage where theres a massive open area instead of a clear path along the sand (maybe this is just me though). Im bringing this up because if the point is being rewarded for your reaction times, but you have to actually stop (emphasis on this, youre not supposed to be stopping in sonic games, unless youre fighting enemies or something) and figure out where to go, it has a massive effect on the feeling of speed in the game. The wide paths are great! Gives you a real sense of speed and gives you space to move around the path that the level is on. The parts where sonic is running along a curved path look great and look like theyre a blast to play on. The secret ring placement is kind of confusing , because instead of getting the secret rings for doing things like high speed tricks, and chaining multiple high difficulty reactions, you get the rings for actually stopping and exploring the area. Usually sonic games arent about exploring, so I didnt really understand that design choice. But those two things are just nitpicks, besides that this game looks like a BLAST to play, and I REALLY like the idea about a sonic game being momentum based. Removing the boost gauge and letting the player spin dash to get their speed is an awesome concept that I have yet to see done well since games like sonic mania. Speaking over spin dash, you may want to implement the jumping spin dash from sonic mania where you can just jump, and when you land you can press a button that gives you all the speed of a spin dash. It worked really well in keeping the feeling of “flow” in sonic mania. TLDR; level direction off at points and secret ring placement encourages exploration in a game about moving fast which is weird, overall the game looks excellent and im stoked to play!!! 10/10

The seaside hill take was pretty good stuff. I will say tho, those little spring poles don’t work as well in 3D as they do 2D. You can cut those easy in place of springs. It’s the design philosophy. Since you’re going forward rather than sideways, you can’t really afford that sort of creativity for a 3D space. Plus, for some players, it’ll hamper the experience if they can’t hit it just right.

Shoutout to sonic rush. Godly game that's so overlooked Edit: Although this is just a test version it's so bad to watch/play that I can't help but feel turned away by it.... far too slow with really sluggish speed portions to bat... big small yikes.

Hi! Game creator here. The game is meant to be momentum based. The youtuber clearly wanted to take it slow for the sake of the video. You have a momentum roll that can be used to speed up. If you look at a lot of the other early videos you can come to learn that you can go very fast (The max speed is over twice as fast as default Infinity)

BAMGEdits The models they use, to me, always look like they are missing something. Something like this could actually make the models look a little better. Plus they need to decide how long or short sonics quills are cause they keep changing it 😂

The only issue I can see is that launching off ramps and slopes (natural ones, not the booster ramps) looks wonky. This looks fantastic. Actual focused level design instead of just " here's a wide open space for physics".

The ramps and homing attacks should add flow to the characters' mouvements, they halt the momentum too abruptly. But otherwise, giving its early beat state, it's looking great. Plus Blaze is awesome! I Hope PixDev reads this cause they're on a good track.

Seeing Blaze always feels so fresh! Shadow is so overused. I would also love to see Tails and Knuckles in the boost formula sometimes.

the only problems I see here is that having level design this incredibly open in a 3D space may get confusing unless they are VERY careful where and when the level opens up and where it’s more linear

This is veeeery rough around the edges in many respects, but I'm always glad to see fans trying to do something new with the way Sonic feels to play. I think SEGA would benefit from that kind of fresh perspective.

Like a tip, improve the progression on the level, the graphic style is good beacuse the user can see meanwhile is going fast, but some parts on the level doesnt have too much sense like use the remote control attack or the Ring dash. After all great job :)

Sonic doesn't have any feel when he runs. Possibility due to not hearing footsteps or dunno anything that isn't him jumping. Dunno feels like it's missing something when running.

I want sega to kinda implement a kind of rpg type element to their next modern sonic game: Since there is already 6 shoe models including the two from the sonic movie each shoe would have a different play Style: Classic sonic shoes: these would have the same abilities You would have on sonic 1 Sonic adventure light shoes: It would have an adventure like type of gameplay And more exploration based And now uncludes the spindash And light dash by charging just like in the original game as well a granting You the homing attack. Sonic adventure 2 soap shoes: These would grant You the ability to grind on rails letting You go places you couldn't go to before on the adventure playstyle while still keeping the homing attack, spindash, And light dash. Nomal modern sonic shoes: Grants You the ability to Boost, homing attack now does 1.5% more damage. Puma suede classic sneakers: These would grant You one 2 hit kill on stronger enemies while giving You 2.5% stronger hits against bosses depending on how many rings You have. Puma dare: these pair of sneakers would stun the enemy with electricity for a short period of time if homing attacked, it also retains all other abilities from the past! Stun time: 4.5 seconds! Note that most of these stages might have a similar playstyle to the Infinity engine, let's spread the Word And let next year be the year of sonic!

Lookin good. Camera still needs tweaking. I want to say slow-down the running a tad but only cause it keeps feeling like you have little control and will run off the course easily.

Already done. Added recently, Sonic has a higher acceleration now until he begins running. Then the acceleration lowers. So you can control your own speed (roll down slopes to pick up speed) or stay in control running normally

Imo the problem with Sonic fangames no ne wants to admit is that every single fangame developer just takes Sega's assets and gameplay tropes and pretty much copies them or expands upon them slightly, but no one is actually willing to try something entirely new and different Like for example, Sonic's enemies. What are the ways you can interact with them? You jump on them - they pop. You touch them you lose rings or die if you don't have any. Oh yeah, and they occasionaly shoot or charge at you but that's about it. And this formula remained unchanged through 30 years of Sonic's existece, with some exceptions here and there like Sonic Chronicles or Sonic Battle. Seems pretty stale. Why not give Sonic a good ol' hp bar and develop an actual combat system? A fast paced one, of course, since it's still Sonic, not some beat 'em up. Personally I would very much love a free roam Sonic game with movement and free run system similiar to that of the games like Prototype and some fun combat. Would be a breath of fresh air honestly But that's just my opinion and how I feel things are, if you disagree that's completely fine

Only complaints: A few camera tweaks, When Sonics on those little jumper things have his legs bend a bit to show he’s jumping Make the Skydiving thing optional (Don’t let him be that floaty while he runs)

The water is a bit difficult to see (1:18 being my case and point) but other than that the game looks lovely!

I'm not really a fan of Infinity Engine (it's physics, more than anything). Having said that, at least those new textures and animations no longer make me feel dizzy. Now, if one couldn't just clear the stage by only jumping REAAAAAAALLY far…

another option you have hear is running on the water until the end, you can beat the level in like 12 seconds. xD
