Speaking from the Bluegrass world: I know plenty of people that say if something isn't thrashing and banging and played as hard and as loud as possible from the start to the end it sucks. That's probably in play quite a bit here. It would be hard to give anything an edge doing it strictly acapella. I've never understood saying something sucks because it stylistically doesn't appease you. Say that you don't like it because "this," but don't say it sucks.  Edited because "from the start to the beginning" isn't very long.

If you want my opinion, Sonic CD is an older Sonic game and has a sweet soundtrack, you should definitely play that one! Don't listen to the the fanboys though, be sure to check both the japanese soundtrack and the US one, as they're both great in their own way :)

***** If you can find a Sonic Mega Collection Plus, it'll have all of the genesis classics and a lot of the game gear ones as well. It's available on PC, PS2, Gamecube and Xbox (original), but may be a wee bit hard to find nowadays. The alternatives are that most of the older games are available on Steam, but the price is a bit steep for their age or you may be able to get a hold of most of the games on other genesis compilations for various platforms.

In all fairness... I don't think the original Sonic the Hedgehog was a very good game in general... Green hill=fun! every other level=not so much except spring yard which I still enjoy but it has it's own set of problems... but I am fine with that... this game brought us Sonic 2 and 3 as well as a lot of other great games!

BloodySteel64 It is/was ace! The joy was trying to throw yourself around the levels as quickly as possible, despite them not being particularly built for speed runs. Sonic (and the player) is pushed out of his comfort zone trying to save his buddies. :-)
