I think crit is good. Obviously it can be used poorly, but the goal is to throw a mild wrench into your otherwise predictable strategy. It forces you to react to a suddenly unfavorable situation. It's important that you can actually deal with that crit though. If the crit is basically an autoloss, or so detrimental that it's better to just reset, then it's not being used well.

Pikmin 3 has my favorite time mechanic ever. You create your OWN time limit based on how much fruit you get in a day. It rewards players for getting better at the game because they are directly increasing their own time limit by being skilled and getting more fruit. Also, if you fail, it doesn't make you play the whole game again; you can go back to a certain day you could have played better and retry from there.

Here’s my stream of consciousness about the pasta discourse. You’re wrong for your Spaghetti hate, which is a good baseline in the pasta world. It’s more filling per bite since you twirl it, making it more substantial of a main by itself. Other smaller pastas work better as a side dish or as something to be combined with other ingredients. Angel hair doesn’t always hit and sometimes is too light for what it’s being paired with. Bucatini is a travesty and is basically if you tried to make a worse weird spaghetti by adding a hole through the middle. Terrible texture. Rotelli isn’t great past the age of 10 when the novelty of eating wheels stops being cool. Rigatoni is sometimes too big and gets floppy/soggy. But yes, bow ties are S tier, no question. Great texture and size for a pasta.

Okay hear me out on this: Imagine a Pokemon Go type of game where it NEEDS your real-world location to function. Now imagine that it makes this information freely available to anyone. Now what type of game is this? You level up and earn rewards by doing cruel things to other people and recording them. Whatever gets voted as the "most cruel" in a certain timeframe gives the person the most reward. The game could literally cause crimes and REWARD people for committing them. I believe this, Coney, is the worst a game could do.

Random elements on characters can absolutely work in competitive fighting games if/when done tastefully. For the timer part, a good game that uses a timer like that is Risk of Rain 2. It’s a rogue lite and the core mechanic is that a timer is always counting up and making monsters harder, which forces newer players to play the game faster and learn how to play. The worst crime a (fighting) game could do is not introduce competent rollback netcode. It's such a standard thing in the market and so easy to setup. It's crazy that SF5 of all games had some of the worst one sided rollback netcode. All the while Smash just stuck with a revamped delay based netcode and continues to lag even if both sides are wired. (Quick rant about nintendo online features) Other nintendo games like Arms and Splatoon have much better developed online functionality than Smash, which is straight up criminal since Smash is a much more iconic franchise. Fighting games need proper online functionality to thrive when public venues shut down. Otherwise, the developer doesn't care about their game at all.

The worst crime a video game could do is waste someone's time by forcing them to do something that isn't fun. For example, what if a video game required you to chop down 1000 trees to craft a better weapon? However, to chop down each tree you'd have to run to it and press the same button for 5 seconds. It would take you 5000 seconds to chop down all 1000 trees which, when divided by 60, is equal to about 1 hour and 23 minutes, and that isn't even including all of the time it would take for you to run from one tree to another. Stuff like that is comparable to factory work, and I don't want to work when I'm trying to have fun.

About critical hits in video games, I think for a game to have crits in it, it should one: allow both the player and the enemy to crit. Two: have some control over the targeting of the enemy, like aggro trading and positioning to keep your lose condition at least a little more safe. Three: if the game does not have two then it shouldn’t have a key lose condition, for example pokemon, unless you purposely increase the risk crits don’t mean much in normal pokemon (not competitive). For clarification I never played Earthbound, but from the sounds of it there is nothing you can do to stop the enemies from singling out Ness or Lucas in order to win and I think there lies the flaw and even if all attacks are random that just not something I would find fun, especially if Ness or Lucas got crit and died in that scenario. Sorry it’s so long, but you said it yourself, KZbin commenters are Chatty Cathys.

Fun fact, since you mentioned never playing Earthbound, Lucas is actually from the sequel. "Why have I never heard of Earthbound 2, then?" you may ask? @zamalamahama48942 жыл бұрын
I feel like it fully depends on what type of game you’re watching and what you’re hoping to get out of it, because you’re taking the interactive aspect out of the game. If you’re watching someone play a game that relies on player choice, or frequently asks what you would do in this situation like Fallout New Vegas, and are watching it as a substitute to playing it, it’s overall worse. If you’re watching purely for someone else’s reaction like if you’ve already played ace attorney and are watching a play through seeing how they react to all the twists. I think, with certain games, that can be almost more fun.

I mean I find the spaghetti part kind of both factual and opinion based. It's definitely true in comparison to other pasta dishes, it's the worst. However, some of the best pasta dishes, including the ones you've shown from that list does use noodle pasta that spaghetti uses or are kind of spaghetti, but with extra ingredients to spice things up, so it does have versatility in what you can do with it. It's like Rice, by itself it's not great, but with the proper ingredients/recipes, it can be amazing. I grew up eating spaghetti and it's one of my favorite dishes of all time for the reasons I mentioned above. It might be the worst pasta dish, but for what it does do, as simple as it is, it's effective and does its thing just fine.

Anyone remember DBZ: Extreme Butoden on 3DS? That game had a mashing mechanic where upon using a super, your opponent could use their meter to launch their super to enter a beam struggle. If your opponent was physically better at mashing than you, your supers would never land even if you combo into them, meaning you eat the other guy's super and waste meter. There are unblockable supers, but they cost twice as much as normal supers, which puts you as a significant disadvantage if you are bad at mashing, since there's no point in challenging your opponent's supers since they'll always win the mashing contest. Basically mashing sucks, especially in PvP games. Luckily Extreme Butoden's OST is good enough on it's own to justify it's existence.

8:10 So the timers that do work in games I found usually have two main things. They're cyclical and can be repeated and they are very brief with maybe a max of 10 minutes of waiting (Time Trials, day/night cycles, time-based mechanics like Prince of Persia), or very basic countdowns that are in line with the difficulty. Some games can get away with aspects like Ocarina of Time dropping brief resets, but it's rarer. The way timers start failing is when they really punish the player for not following them. Example: Final Fantasy 13: Lightning Returns. It has the day/night cycle which was good, but you have a limit of 14 days before having to repeat the game through NG+. And the quests unlock on certain days and have to be done that playthrough. The worst part of it is with the extinction mechanic where if you fail to kill off even one of the enemies completely, you have to redo the playthrough for that one quest which is about 25 hours to get through the game again.
@LtCdrXander2 жыл бұрын
I like more bite sized timers that don't effect the entire game. For example, after you defeat Guard Scorpion in FF7, you have 20 minutes to get out of the mako reactor. Doing so is really easy, and you'll have more than enough time left over, so it doesn't put too much pressure on the player, but it also makes sense and adds to the moment by giving the feeling of imminent danger of the bomb going off. Imagine the game did something where after Sephiroth summons Meteor, you have a constant time limit, forcing you to get to the Northern Cave and kill Sephiroth before Meteor hits Gaia. That would suck. A first time player wouldn't be able to explore the world and discover all the secrets. When a whole game's gimmick is time limits (Majora's Mask) then its more tolerable, but even then I'm not a huge fan of big time limits like that.
@princegoatcheese93792 жыл бұрын
9:39 "my issue with dead rising isn't the time limit, it's that it forces you to wait for stuff to happen" True, but it's also to make sure you get to scoops so you have enough time to beat the mini boss or escort an important character. But if you're masochistic and want to rescue all the survivors for the Saint achievement, then, yeah, it leaves no room for errors. You need to be close to perfect for that to happen. I learned about time management from DR far more effectively than any classroom could have taught me.

I think the worst crime a game could do is be boring, because at least if my IP Address leaked by a video game I'm not bored.

The Charisma one was the best take thus far in any of these videos. You REQUIRE a baseline charisma to function in society. Getting a good job, finding a life partner, making friends, all these things are only possible with some degree of personal charisma. The only other stat you could argue has as much value in modern life as charisma is intelligence HOWEVERER, high charisma and moderate intelligence is WAY BETTER than high intelligence, even in fields like engineering. If you are at least competent and good at working in a team setting, I hire you 100% over a genius who can't communicate any fuckin day of the week. If your charisma is high enough, you can even effectively fake things like high intelligence.
