Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Movie Review & Retrospective

It’s great to see you back with this review as I agree that this is one of the best sonic things I have scene in awhile (especially since the games sure sure as hell don’t do that anymore, please frontier be good btw). I disagree with this take on sonic as a character being bad, different yes very much so but bad nope. Especially after years of having a flanderized cartoon character version of Sonic I think the movie actually makes him charming, and entertaining while also developing him well. Still I will agree to disagree on you with that note. Also glad to see someone else who loved Colleen playing tails. I low key cried when she was casted as not only did I know she’d be great and entertaining but it’s nice to a see a professional voice actor chosen instead of some random a list celebrity actor.

Super glad you enjoyed it dude! It was a bummer how you didn't like the first one at all, and to be fair, there's a lotta stuff you said that I definitely agree weakened the movie a lot (especially the fact that Eggman owned a government truck, they're in San Francisco and he DIDN'T CHASE SONIC IN THE DAMN TRUCK), but I'm glad we both came outta this one with a lot more optimism! I still feel like it's gonna take a little bit longer to get the fully realized Sonic we know and love from the games, since he actually has to GROW into that first, but we're getting there! I also really like what they did with the lore, without getting into spoilers, but the little changes they made, ties together a LOT of other Sonic media that before, was completely unrelated, and have them actually make sense in a way the games never even tried. I'm really glad this movie's getting the attention and praise it's been getting and I PRAY TO THE LORDS ABOVE that Frontiers, Origins and Prime keeps up that momentum for Sonic, so he can finally step out of his shell of mediocrity, and be as good as we all know he can be. I can only hope that eventually, the whole world will once again say "Let's get something straight right now. Sonic...is awesome." :)))

I like both movies individually. The first Sonic the hedgehog movie was a great introduction to the Sonic the hedgehog cinematic universe. The Sonic the hedgehog 2 was sequel to the that universe. Say what you want, I love both of these movies.

Honestly this movie is phenomenal. One of My favorite things about this movie are the characters and their personalities, more specifically Knuckles, Sonic and tails. Sonic was not like himself in the first movie, but in this movie he is back to himself in my opinion. Also tails isn't a coward just like how he is in the games recently. And Knuckles? He is easily the best part of this movie! He is not a comic relief, he is serious just like how he was in sonic 3. But my favorite part is the end Credit scene. My lord that was awesome!

Love your points about the first film, and I'm glad the second one was an improvement for you! I totally agree that Tails and Knuckles are such a big improvement over Sonic in the first film, and how they improve Sonic himself when they're around. I wish a "fun" movie could be more like the 1986 Transformers film, with super cheesy *original* music that is composed for the film itself. The film isn't that good, but at least has a clear personality. I think you're a lot more accepting of some of the film's negative elements than I am - obviously you still dislike them, but where you can maybe overlook them to get to the good parts, I just can't stand them, it ruins the entire film for me. I wish I could have loved the finale but I was genuinely real bored the whole time, the only thing I was anticipating was to finally just see Super Sonic already.

While I like this review my only issue is that I kind of feel you forgotten that Sonic has always existed on "Earth" and the films interpretation of Earth is already fantastical enough that I don't think the argument that it's set on the "real world" isn't a valid take anymore. Plus Sonic having human parents just fits his character as it feels like he adopted his overall attitude by humanity than it being there. Also Live action > Animated.

I like how everyone agrees that the wedding scene is absoluetly awful lol I also hated the dance off. sonic has swiped things out of people’s hands in the first movie yet he doesn’t grab the map and book it out the door with Tails? That felt like something straight out of the Alvin and the chipmunks movies 🤷

“Grab the map, and book it out the door with Tails” Book it to where? They first stayed in the Cabin because there was a storm outside, and Tails’ Device couldn’t pick up a good signal to find where in Siberia they needed to go. So even if Sonic did manage to get the map himself, they still needed to stay there, and if they didn’t find a way to convince the people to let them stay, the people would’ve thrown them out into the cold. So they danced to stay in the Cabin as well.

Also I wouldn't say sonic's never been the type of character to make pop culture references in anything else. At best you can say that Japanese renditions of sonic have avoided that.

I don't mind a more realistic looking sonic, maybe cause i'm weirdly intrigued by the idea of it after that one joke 4th break in the Archie comics way back in the day where a human saw a mobian for the first time, and it was horrid, rabid looking, and amazing at the same time.
