You can still get Tails's name listed as Miles on everything in the game. On the title screen press up 3x, down 3x, then up once. You'll hear a ding, and in everything from the options menu, to his lives counter and the end of stage messages, he'll be listed as Miles. Just a little treat for everyone. This works in all versions btw, Genesis/mega drive cartridge and remake.

as someone who's used sonicretro since i was like 11, i came to this video expecting the absolute best. sonic 2's beta development was documented super heavily on retro. i absolutely love how you went into intricate detail on the betas. you really didn't skip out at all! i'm impressed. it's like the beta pages put into a video! surprised you didn't mention how in the earlier betas when tails took damage it took out your rings.

I was 6-7 years old when I had my Sega Genesis) and I was really confused because I saw videos on youtube with Tails in the playable zones, special stages... the one I had didn't even have the Multiplayer mode!! :( When I told this to my dad back then (he knows about these kind of things tho) he told me that it was maybe a demo! not a full game, and I was fine with it.. the only problem was... wich demo it was? becuase there was nothing like the mine and it was... weird... so well.. I forgot about it until now that I am a teen XD I'm happy to know I played that game but without knowing I literally touched history

9:55 more animation frames would have had no effect on performance of games at that era. The benefit to reduced animation frames is storage. Also having one set of animation at a high frame-rate compared to other animations is a little weird so it could have been a choice to make all Sonic's actions more consistent - but cartridge storage is the main thing it would have changed.

I’m pretty sure both of the balance animations were in the final version, depending on how close to the edge you were. There was also a third for if you were facing away from the edge. Really interesting to see how the game developed before release though. Thanks for the video.

The reason final zone always crashes is because the game is trying to load the boss battle but when there is no boss that can be loaded, the game gets confused and crashes.

The fun part is that extremely early Sonic 2 development featured time travel elements (which ended up being used for CD since they were both co-developed in the same timeframe). At the time, the Hidden Palace was meant to be the place where Sonic would head to in order to time travel.

The mystery monitor was used in the final game, but in multiplayer only. Its function was changed to swap the positions of player one and two in the stage. EDIT: I'm actually going to have to correct myself here. There is a separate icon used for the function described above (swapping places or teleporting). The mystery box contained a random effect in two player games only.

@NicholasKAnything They did this to reduce lag. Although, they could've kept it because it doesn't make much of a difference framerate wise. At least on an emulator, idk about actual hardware running the rom on a flash cart of some sort.

Wow, the amount of stuff they wanted to put into this game is crazy. It would have been like having Sonic 2 + 3 + CD in one game! You've got all these different zones to go through Time travel to see different past and future variations Certain paths take you to certain levels, where time warp points are hidden Different endings depending on which warps you found A secret level called Hidden Palace where you can get super sonic So much stuff!

That incarnation of Hidden Palace can be accessed if you're playing the mobile or Origins versions of the game but what's weird is that to get there, you have to INTENTIONALLY jump into that infamous spike pit from Mystic Cave Act 2
