A detail I really liked about this is how Sonic flinches when Knuckles air boxes at him. It feels like a reference to the fact that he literally punched the Chaos Emeralds out of Sonic once. Like the dude just remembers it so well that his immediate reflex is "God, don't freaking do it again"

One of my favorite parts about this game's story is how much more "mature" the characters feel. Like, they still feel like they're goofy selves, but they do feel like they've grown up since we've last seen them. And yes, the voice actors sounding older does contribute to this, but I'm not complaining

Agreed. This really feels like the natural development of all these characters. Sonic is still snarky but he's got a big heart in him, Amy isn't just a Sonic love machine, Knuckles is taking his rivalry with Sonic to the natural "kissing the homies goodnight" conclusion, and so on and so forth. Amy gave me a dang whiplash with how mature she acted in this game. I was so used to the Amy that's clingy that I never expected this 180 in her character xD After the conversation they had in the Poppy fields, I knew that this game's characters will be something special. Loved how Knuckle became more introspective in this too, both in the prologue and during Ares Island. Absolutely loved their Bro moments there. And Tails, holymoly. He's always been my favorite, and seeing him done so much justice here makes me so happy you don't even know. There better be a solo Tails game some time down the line, I swear to god!

Yep, and even going so far as to have the cast wanna go their own way and explore the world/find themselves without Sonic. Even Eggman was chill af here! Most of the game outside of the opening and final two temples are super light hearted, and then it nails leaning more and more into the hopeless feeling they want by the time Dark Gaia forms.

@Nicktai Flynn and other writers will be continuing to write for future Sonic titles, and apparently Iizuka said the next major Sonic title will be more lighthearted. And assuming their next major project is Sonic Adventure 3, then that means we'll probably get a return to the same tones we got in the Adventure series, a good mix of lightheartedness and seriousness.

0:40 The enemy design in this game is so great specifically for moments like this. I deadass walked up to that thing like "Okay, I see ring rails and a big windchime, is this a boosty grindy puzzle?" And then it squared up and kicked my ass via perspective fuckery. I love bosses that are so fucking enormous and inorganic that they just look like set design. Also a Smash Bros Sonic based on his Frontiers moveset would whip so much ass. Three of his four specials are just different versions of the Spin Dash. But here, he could have Sonic Boom side B (with the air variant being Cross Slash), rework Homing Attack to be more instantaneous with less damage and more end lag, change his down smash to a Cyloop, his up B could be Wild Rush, you could even work in his Phantom Rush mechanic that changes his three hit A-string into a flurry and decrease the start and end lag of his B moves, he could use Grand Slam if you manage to perfect-parry an opponent... And his final smash would still be Super Sonic, but now he can just go full cinematic and use a Super Cyloop to catch people for it.

The community misconstrued that statement as meaning that he’s done with Smash when he said something similar after each Smash game. Would I prefer someone else to take up the directorial mantle, sure. But Sakurai has already tried to find a successor & failed. Also, there’s really no if for the next Smash. Nintendo isn’t going to not commission a new entry in a franchise that can single-handedly sell systems.

I think my favorite part of watching Penny play literally ANY game is all of the different voices and impressions. She is the single reason I've started wanting to learn how to do a few of the different Sonic voices. (Also, I learned my lefts and rights the exact same way, and literally any time I meet someone who struggles with it, the first thing I do is hold up both hands with both index fingers and thumbs pointed out)
