Unfortunately, this also means Shadow’s characterization in the IDW comics is canon, which is the only thing I don’t like.

Contrary to their beliefs, a lot of people like Shadow for a reason. Heck, he wasn't even supposed to be around after Sonic Adventure 2 happened. But, because fans really liked him, Sega saw fit to bring him back in Heroes--albeit with his memories erased, then jogged in Shadow The Hedgehog. Shadow may not be written like he used to be as of the 2010 boost era games, but his popularity is immense to this day.

I think the Espio tribe thing was in the Archie universe, same thing with the Freedom Fighters. Thing is because of what happened with the Ken Penders case (along with other possible lawsuits and the comic getting less sales) the entire Archie run was rebooted twice, once with the attempt of starting over fresh due to a loss of around 200 characters in the original run and the current run under Sega guidelines. It's a whole mess to explain and you can look it up on KZbin about Penders for a more detailed explanation Rider Bros.

The OVA is a different continuity (different Universe, SOOOOOO different) also the OVA Metal actually said that “there can only be 1 sonic” because he sees Sonic as the real Sonic

The IDW is an different universe from the Cannon however it has the same story of Modern Sonic. It from the beginning of the sonic the hedgehog series until the end of the Sonic Forces. This is a different universe however. So Sonic IDW is apart of the Sonic Franchise and Cannon but to its own continuity, the Sonic IDW continuity.

The "police" in shadow the hedgehog aren't police, they're government soldiers known as GUN, Guardian Units of Nations. They are basically the government organization that ensures the protection of Mobius. And yes they are canon.
