Last summer, we sat down with Sonic Team Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka to discuss his multi-decade career at Sega. We learn about his childhood fascination with becoming a manga artist, the transition from college life to working at Sega, and his early career developing games like Devi and Pii, Golden Axe 3, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Iizuka remembers the excitement and challenge during the transition from the Sega Genesis (known as the Sega Mega Drive in Japan) to the Sega Saturn, which allowed the team progress from 2D pixel art to 3D polygonal modeling.
Notably, the Sonic the Hedgehog lead reflects on the early Dreamcast days, moving to the United States to better implement western culture into Sonic Adventure 2, and finally, describes his emotions after hearing Sega was exiting the hardware business and ending production of the Dreamcast.

Makes you realize how confused the brand was around the time of 2006 and onward. As he says, having multiple different directors each having their own vision is bad for the brand even though a lot of those games were good. It split the fans and created confusion with the story/tone changes and the character/world design changes.

Very special to hear, including that, like a lot of people at SEGA, they chose the company when NAMCO and KONAMI were also options. Also, that IIZ had aspirations to be a manga artist, it now makes more sense that he even did the graphics for DEVI & PII. The programmer he mentioned who was making that game with him is KOICHI TOYA, who, as far as I know, is still a programmer on the Phantasy Star series 24 years after the original Phantasy Star Online. Also, even he got to be a part of the debugging squad for Sonic 2! That's always fun when you hear about a big game designer getting a small start with another famous game, like how MAKOTO UCHIDA (designer of Altered Beast, GOLDEN AXE, WING WAR and DIE HARD Arcade) was on the test team for AFTER BURNER. It's a good point he made about storytelling techniques evolving over the console generations. Obviously different developers progressed differently, but they went from minimalist in-engine cutscenes and background details in Sonic 3 on Mega Drive, to full cinematics for NiGHTS on Saturn, to fully-voiced in-engine cutscenes + cinematics for Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast. Kinda interesting that everything SONICTEAM USA / SEGA Studio USA did from Sonic Heroes to NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams got a bit skimmed over here, although I guess it's fair since IIZ had become less hands-on and more management by then. That was a fascinating final question!

@guesswho2337

It's not that he doesn't appreciate Unleashed, he was just commenting on how the various teams working on Sonic games at the time were kind of pulling the series in different directions. Unleashed, Secret Rings, and 06 all came out within a two-year span and each one was radically different from the other. Given that the first games to come out after Iizuka pushed for a more unified vision were Colors and Generations, which both based their game design directly on Unleashed, I'd imagine he respects it well enough. The lack of production value since Unleashed has mostly just been a matter of Sega not being willing to put so much money into the franchise anymore. And Iizuka by all accounts has been pushing to change that (word is that he fought hard internally to get Frontiers as much dev time as it got).

@@cJay19 This is blatantly not true lmao, the games only started going down in the late 2010s after they started straying away from the formula with games like LW and Forces.
@unskilledgamer3642
@unskilledgamer3642 Ай бұрын
@@cJay19 with the difference that Unleashed handled the boost formula quite well. The levels were created in a manner that boost made you proceed faster, but also gave you less time to react to obstacles. So you had to consider when to boost and when to let go. But with Colours and Generation following these formula, they started to remove those kind of obstacles wich turned the boost from a risk-reward mechanic into a boring instant win button. In that case I would not blame Unleashed for introducing the boost but rather Generations for completely missing the point behind the formula.

@adamn.4111
@adamn.4111 Ай бұрын
Part of the reason might be that the Saturn and Dreamcast hardware was much more complicated than the 2D-based consoles that came before. Especially in the case of Saturn, it makes sense why there's been no mini console or re-releases of games on new consoles. Look at how long it took for the emulation community to get Saturn emulation right. Dreamcast is a lot less complicated than Saturn as far as I understand, but emulating a 3D-based console still takes some work. "The Saturn has a dual-CPU architecture and eight processors." ~Wikipedia Maybe you were thinking of game franchises from that era, and why they've not been revived (with new games). I could've misunderstood you.

This is rather interesting. The early divisions between the western and eastern Sonic branding are common knowledge, but I never guessed that a big reason for the series' constant experimentation through the 2000's came from a lack of top-level management within the eastern branch. I guess that helps explain why SEGA rarely refined their design decisions from one game to the next.

@@dextersdad6920 Naw I really really like Frontiers, I mean the 90s after the Mega Drive largely sucked ass for SEGA and they fucked up so hard over and over so it's a miracle the company still exists in any form at all, even if it had to be on life support from Sammy in the 2000s

No. Never. Why you ask me? Because it makes no sense financially or strategically for them. Also is there really any need for it? What would a new SEGA console give you over the other ones (except the name)?

@@afriend9428 How are Microsoft and SONY failing. Please give me some number? Yes the growth have stopped. But you can’t compare them to SEGA. Sega of today do not have a lot money or resources compared to them. If so please give me those numbers from a reliable source. Also I asked you a question. Can you please answer it instead of being hostile? You don’t need to but I asked an honest question to you why? Exactly a new Nintendo hand held is coming so with that why they need of an additional machine? What special things would it have? The only single benefit I can see with SEGA entering the hardware again would be competition to push the prices down. Still with SONY, NINTENDO AND MS how could that be done. Hardware was never the thing those made money on. It was the software. And with that is disqualified SEGA to release a mow cost machine. They can’t afford it really. This is what they tried before and failed with. So then what could be left for a SEGA machine. Well cheaper games in their game store. That could actually be a benefit. So this is how I see a new SEGA machine. Please tell me your view. Read my comment to you I asked why to you? I did not say it was a bad ideas. I stated they I did not believe in it. But it did not mean I am against you wanting it. I just wanted to understand something that does not make sense for me. So instead of “attacking” me and writing things that seems unlikely (like please tell me what you mean with SONY and MS “failing”) I want a constructive dialogue. Not a fight or rude words written ok (I mean “nobody asked you”) Be true to your name and keep a civil and friendly tone please

Man I've been saying it for years now but this is the perfect time for Sega to re-enter the console market. Nintendo is the only console worth playing now if we're only talking about games (not specs or scripts which I don't care about). Nintendo has no competition anymore gameplay wise. Sega is a video game company at it's core like Nintendo, not a tech company first like Sony or Microsoft. I know I'm ready for the Dreamcast's successor but I also think the world is now too
@litjellyfish

Exactly sega is not a tech company. And that is why they never will enter the console hardware market again. Ever.
