Sonic Unleashed and Super Mario Odyssey are REALLY Similar

Turns out a few people from Sonic Team went to Nintendo and worked on Mario Odyssey. But it seems it was mostly just environment artists and such. No one that would be in a position to make the creative decisions of what the game is going to be. So while it is possible that there is a direct connection between Unleashed and Odyssey, we can't really say for sure.

Also, Antz vs. Bug's Life was not the best example to use in regards to coincidences. Antz being similar to Bug's Life was actually not all that coincidental. Jeffrey Katzenberg defected from Pixar to DreamWorks, essentially stole John Lassiter's idea for a movie about bugs, and then went out of his way to make sure his movie came out first. The competition and comparisons were very much deliberate in that instance. A more apt example would've been something like, say, Pokémon and Digimon, two franchises that debuted around the same time where the similarities between the two were, for the most part, coincidences. Both were just pulling from the same inspiration (Ultraman's capsule kaiju), but Pokémon combined that concept with bug collecting whereas Digimon combined it with Tamagotchi.

I heard after Sonic Generations was shipped many Sonic Team devs left Sega to work for Nintendo, some ended up working on SMO. Since SMO I've been noticing Mario has been more Sonic-y in its presentation. Many poses Mario does in SSBU are iconic Sonic poses. Also, SMO having main lyrical theme and a final stage lyrical theme are something Mario never did before but are staples of 3D Sonic games.

11:55 - Antz and Bug's Life wasn't at all a coincidence. Someone working on Bug's Life talked to an ex-coworker about the movie during early development, believing them to still be trustworthy. The ex-coworker felt wronged by Disney and wanted to make their new 3D movie flop, so he pushed hard to get something similar done before Pixar could finish that could, based on the _early_ knowledge he had, make it look like Disney was copying someone else's work (or at least split the viewer base to decrease Disney's sales). Later, when they made Shrek, the character Farquad was inspired by his old boss at Disney, which is why the area outside his castle had some theme park elements.

They were trying to get as far away from the past games a s possible so the game can stand on its own. You dont need any prior knowledge of Sonic to understand anything in the game. Also that kind of would have ruined the affect Generations had as just pulling from previous places is the entire identity of Gens. which only came out 3 years later.

I’d like to point out on Sonic’s side that Eggmanland, while not from any previous games, was a concept built up in previous games by Eggman’s desire for this utopia to be created in his image, and I saw Eggmanland as that vision coming true. In that aspect I felt like I was seeing some world-building that solidified some continuity of the prior games

Mario Odyssey also had small references to other 3D Mario places besides the references in Mushroom Kingdom, an early texture of the globe that's on the Odyssey's entrance had isle Delfino besides the mushroom continent where's the mushroom kingdom, I think they took it off because people might would think that you could go there And there's also the Bob Omb Battlefield map that one of the Toads have in it's hands

A lot of the devs who worked on Unleashed later went to Nintendo to work on games like Galaxy 2, BOTW and Odyssey. This also might be one of the reasons why Sonic Team can never stay consistent with the quality of their games; it's not always the same team.

I also think maybe a reason why both games ended up having these aesthetics, is that both were some of the first games in their respective franchises, that really tried to push realistic graphics on HD consoles. And a really natural way to achieve this, is literally copying reality, and hence that could be how they came up with the traveling around the world to similar to real-life destinations. That's my little theory.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that when Mario finally gets to Bowser on the moon, Bowser pulls a switch that sends Mario down into a type of level that’s difficult for Mario (ie lava). In Sonic 1 when Sonic finally gets to Eggman after Scrap Brain 2, Eggman presses a switch that sends Sonic down to an inconvenient level for him (ie water level)

Technically Mario has had something like that since 64 with the Koopa Shell, or Sunshine with the Turbo Nozzle which was definitely the main inspiration for that power-up in Odyssey (though technically the turbo nozzle didn't actually make you _run_ on the water), or Mini Mario in NSMB, or heck even the ice flower in Galaxy technically did a similar kind of thing, and then post-Unleashed there was Dash Yoshi in Mario Galaxy 2 which let you run on water, so that's not any new Unleashed similarity for Mario unique to Odyssey.

Yeah it seems after gens, some Sonic Team Devs moved to Nintendo. And it seems some worked on Odyssey. But it seems that Sonic Team has been increasing in size since forces. And there hasn’t been losses in Sonic Team devs since forces. Hopefully this new Sonic Team stays and doesn’t leave to another company. It seems they know what they are doing especially with Frontiers Reception being positive. Also on Twitter the Director has been responding to requests of fans for the next Sonic Game and it seems we are going to see the return of Real Pinball Physics/ momentum gameplay in the next game seeing the Director Mario Kishimoto has seen that many people have been requesting the return of proper momentum.

I’d say the games are very similar in their concepts, but not really in their execution. If you actually look at Holoska next to the Snow Kingdom, or compare Empire City to New Donk City, they look, sound and feel wildly different. Odyssey’s kingdoms all have some kind of silly Mario twist, and honestly resemble Paper Mario or Sunshine more than anything in Unleashed. Sonic Unleashed is much more grounded and familiar, making it feel like Sonic is just blazing through the real world. Odyssey also loves messing with art styles to make it feel like Mario is out of his element. Luncheon Kingdom, Lost Kingdom and Ruined Kingdom are especially out there aesthetically, while Sonic Unleashed is pretty consistent from beginning to end. I feel like the concept for Odyssey wasn’t just to be a globetrotting adventure, but also to make Mario feel like a fish out of water, which Unleashed doesn’t really do for Sonic. In fact, it’s 06 that went for the “fish out of water” vibe, which is why Odyssey got so many 06 comparisons when it was first revealed.

I'm baffed you didn't mention the fact that Wooded Kingdom is just the exact same as Planet Wisp from Sonic Colors, both feature a florest of a similar tone of blue, that is overcomed by a red factory in the middle of it that has in some form a purple liquid involved in its design (in Sonic Unleash it is the water from the planet that is purple, and in Mario Odyssey it is the attack of some of the enemies that involve tainting the area around them with a purple liquid as obstacles for the player to avoid). But the biggest similarity is in their respective bosses, in witch both on them involves around a robot in which 3 major elements of their designs are having circular body (one being vetically sideways and the other being horizontaly standing), having eyes (one having two eyes coming from the middle and the other having one big eye in the middle) and both of them have lasers as its main form of offfense against the player. I don't bealive in the slightest that this is a coincidence, I DON'T.

I think the evidence is clear because they have a vocal song which no other Mario game had. Nintendo did you get that idea from Sonic perhaps?
