UPDATE: EVERYONE ASKING ABOUT DLC: You need to include the title update file with the DLC files when you install content in xenia, you will know it is working when the main menu fades to the world map, rather than transitioning directly.

Reason people hated Unleashed was because of the Werehog mostly, the combat finishers were mostly QTE based and the combat in general just wasn't all that great. Also same combat music for every encounter plus being forced to fight in every encounter didn't mesh well with players. At least those specific reasons are all I can think of, the Sonic stages were some of the best in all of 3D sonic games though which I do agree with, I loved running through the day time stages I also like the night time stages myself but I agree with some of the criticisms for Werehog sonic stages regarding the music and every encounter having to be finished in order to progress. Combat mechanics didn't bother me much at all though.

I grew up with the Wii and ps2 versions (own an xbox360 and ps3 but I wasn't able to get the game like that living overseas from America) so it's nice to be able to play the HD version (It's a shame Sega won't port the game to PC but this is the best option right now)

i played this when i was a kid but i had a ps2 and still loved that version and played it a million times and named it as my favourite video game, when i grew up and finally got the money to buy a pc this was the first game i looked for, i played it with the ps3 emulator but it wasnt stable and had some glitches and drop frames but that didnt stop me from enjoying it, now this ? man it runs so smooth without any drop frames ! man i cant thank u enough for this guide

For anyone having issues with the 60fps patch, make sure the "patches" folder is the one that's in the same directory as Xenia Canary, NOT the parent folder "game-patches-main"! Another issue is that the 720 patch in the patch .toml can cause graphical glitches whenever you boost, so setting it to false seems to be the solution to that issue. Thanks so much for the video, you've earned my sub!

Yeah, I just followed the steps in the video - Thanks by the way Zarkator - but I recommend that you keep the name = "1280x720 Resolution" as false in the Sonic Unleashed Patch in the patches folder, because if you enable this resolution as true it will take away the stage icons, enemy blows and will make Sonic's boost unstable. When I realized that this was what was causing all these problems, I returned the name = "1280x720 Resolution" to false and now all the icons appear and Sonic's boost is wonderful. If you want to increase the resolution, just go to the Xenia-canary.config file and look for "draw_resolution_scale_y" and "draw_resolution_scale_y" and change the number 1 in each of these to 2 which will make the resolution 2560X1440p or change both to 3 which will make 4K resolution. It is also possible to combine a draw_resolution_scale with different values to obtain smaller or larger resolutions, but the only possible ranges are 1 to 3. However, remember that the game may not run well in 4K depending on your video card and also the game. With me the draw_resolution_scale_x in 2 and the draw_resolution_scale_y in 2 are running the game very well.

Absolutely AMAZING! I've had to do this tutorial twice but its fine. Only one thing. On my first playthrough, the egg dragoon boss fight BLINDED ME. I have no idea what it was but around sonic was a very bright yellow explosion. It wasn't grass, it was something else. I encountered the same thing off of other objects in eggmanland and the egg lancer boss but thankfully my eyes were safe whilst looking at them. Edit: I keep getting the weird error that everyone is having, i've tinkered the patches, but i've gotten nothing out of it.

Thanks for the awesome tutorial! I can actually play this game on PC now! Vulkan worked the best for me because it produced the least amount of crashes. Had to disable the 1280x720 resolution patch though since the graphics were being weird with that on. CPU: Ryzen 5600X GPU: GTX 2060

ive found using vulkan works better for the most part than direct11/custom, aside from werehog fur under most lighting conditions or invisible lifeups (you see the aura atleast). On a fresh playthrough press f5 at the beginning of every stage, no explosions will happen For empire city you need to switch from vulkan or else the floor is green for some reason That's about all, seems to be working great

i have an nvidia gpu but unfortunately, directx 12 crashes wayyy too much on my pc, so i had to give up to vulkan and take out the 1280x720 patch because it fucks up the graphics, on normal resolution it still has some graphical artifacts but is way more passable, still, at least i can finally replay this game! thank you so much for the help with the troubleshooting :)

I am having input issues on Windmill Isle Act 1. Pressing A doesn't always do a full jump, just like a hop. Also, I can only move forward when I boost or homing attack. If I try to start running normally after standing still I don't move forward at all (which makes no sense because the game registers when I try to turn around and Sonic faces that way, but just doesn't move). Any ideas?

Okay so I got the latest build for xenia experimental and I cannot find the executable for the app on PC at all. I don't think its included which is kind of crazy. So I honestly have zero clue what to even do with this, I dunno if I should find a public build that the executable is with or just keep digging through these folders.

The game looks great but the intro stage glitching started to happen I did hit F5 to stop it and it worked but the cutscene after would crash(Graphics device lost)probably due to an internal error is what would pop up a few seconds into the cutscene.I downloaded the MODS .AMD grass fix .RemoveDay/Night Cutscenes and .SU Fixes I don’t know if they are activated during gameplay. @@Y_CALIB3R yeah, turn off the AMD grass fix mod, that doesn't do anything for your GPU and might cause problems. To make sure mods are working, look in the top left of the emulator window when you open the game, it'll say something like "mods loaded" in the title bar.

for some reason the only API that works for me is Vulkan, anything else gives me an error after the 2nd cutscene. This would be fine but on Vulkan any transparent effect is missing and boosting makes the screen basically impossible to see. Do you know of any settings i can change to fix this issue? I've tried older versions of xenia and still nothing is fixing it.

What should I do if it doesn’t say “Patch Applied” above? I can’t even finish the first stage because the game keeps crashing… and it’s definitely not an hardware issue since I can run perfectly way heavier games like COD Warzone, Fn, Dauntless and even other Sonic games like Frontiers and Generations. thats probably just a performance issue, the game dropping your input due to a small framedrop, try lowering your resolution or using ds4windows for a stronger input pipeline

sounds like its asking for the ISO. Point it to the folder that contains default.xex, that's the actual game executable as far as the launcher is concerned.

i just followed everything, the only thing i didnt do was add the mods, outside of the grass one as it seemed to be truly important, it work fine of direct, vulgan looses the werehog textures and effects like dash and stuff, and custom is about same as direct, all goes swimmingly but ill get crashes saying (Graphics device lost)probably due to an internal error amd ryzen 7 cpu gtx 1080 gpu

Ended up getting this working extremely well on my PC, after jumping through a few hoops, and getting rid of the older canary patches and application files!, id imagine someone who's never used xenia before, this probably worked first try! I personally just ran into conflicts with my config and xenia patches/version from previous emulations. Anyways the only thing I'm stuck with currently is screen-taring even with V-sync enabled. I've tried with both the config on xenia and through the Mod manager anyone else having this issue? EDIT seems it was a monitor issue. Unleashed mod manager doesn't support 1080p, for god knows whatever reason, my b currently I'm making my PC push 4k signal and the taring has gone away with V-sync enabled or disabled

Well Congrats! Holy Crap IT works! from my experience try all API's Vulkan is the most stable. IMO looks horrible but after gathering shaders you can go back or your next playthrough will be great and wont crash on custom haven't tried much DX11 as it just crashes a lot, looks great but has a GPU error with my 3060 my crashing started on act 1 night savannah citadel. switched to vulkan it was blurry, and super lacking in most of the games visual charm but, it got me to the day time stages and I was able to switch back and progress.

i followed the tutorial and i had to use vulkan because the other two options didnt work and it works but lags a bit during the werehog sections, but the controls both work and dont. Sonic controls fine in 3d but in 2d i cant walk forward or backward sometimes whick makes the 2d sections virtually unplayable and the werehog works fine but there is a section were you have too mash B to pull a lever but no matter how hard i mash nothingg happens.

I have a problem with Vulkan that I cannot find anywhere, in that no matter what I do, the resolution doesn't seem to change, whether I go to Directx12, change it and switch back to Vulkan in the emulator, or changing the X and Y values of the resolution scale in the config file. But I can't reliably use Directx12 because the game crashes too frequently. Other than that gripe, your guide has been amazing, I grew up with Unleashed and being able to play it again at 60fps is awesome, if need be I can play through at it's native resolution but I just know my PC can handle it higher.

I have heard that problem with newer versions of xenia. There are 2 things i can suggest, one is that i know the mod manager strongly dislikes if you have the dlc installed, so you could try disabling the dlc and see if that fixes it, otherwise i believe there are mods on gamebanana that are made specifically for if you do have the dlc. If none of that is the issue, you probably just gotta wait for the emulator to fix it

Whenever I try to install mods though UMM it just doesn't load the mods. Then I tried just replacing the original game files with the modded files and the game won't even load

When set to DX12 or Custom, the game crashes with the "graphics device lost" message in the cutscene after the tutorial stage. On Vulkan, the game runs but it is prone to stuttering, along with a lot of visual effects broken (the rings disappearing instead of flying towards the boost bar, the blue trail being missing when doing a homing attack, and the boost itself blurring the whole screen and making the game nearly unplayable.) My pc specs include a Ryzen 5 5600x, RX 6600, and 16 GB DDR4 3200 RAM. Is there anything I can do to avoid the graphics device lost crash?

Depends what mods youve got installed, most of the ones in the video address those issues. Although the graphics device lost error is just a problem with the emulator not recognizing your hardware, try finding the latest build or reverting to an older one maybe

Just reset my computer and it seems to have fixed the graphical glitches and the game is playable again. Disable the 1280x720 patch. If you want a higher resolution, use fsr or raise the resolution in the config file or mod manager.

After following the guide, cutscenes and hub worlds still crash after a few seconds, making it practically impossible to experience the story even on the latest Canary version. Switching the GPU to vulkan didn't seem to fix the issue. Other than that (which is most likely an error on my part), super helpful guide

Try pressing f5 more often to reset the shader cache after loading screens

@@Zarkator I've been trying that, but it doesn't prevent any crashes. Pressing F5 while in a hub world (specifically Apatos in this case) is sometimes the reason the game crashes. I keep getting the "Graphics device lost" error no matter how much tinkering I do. Thanks for the tip, though

thats literally just how the game is lol, maybe some mods can improve it, but that's just to be expected

Its been found that umm does not enjoy if you have the dlc installed, and many mods wont work. You can turn off title update in the canary config file to get it to work again

it doesnt matter much, you can leave it alone and set the emulator's vsync options in your gpu control panel

Sounds like you may have unpacked the iso incorrectly, try doing it from a fresh folder

when i use the 60 fps patch, the game removes a lot of rendered assets and the game blurs up, the boost is messed up and the game is really unplayable, its good with directx 12, but when i use vulkan it messes up, disabling it makes it stable enough to not crash but it isnt 60 frames, any help?

have you tried the custom api as well? Thats the one that works for me even though it SHOULD be the same as vulkan
