Sonic Unleashed has a lot of flaws... like...a lot. But you can't deny the passion and effort that went into making this game, not to mention how much of a thrill ride the boost gameplay is. And it set the groundwork for future Sonic games, that were better received. For those reasons alone I can call Sonic Unleashed a good game that deserves more love. :)

Sonic Unleashed is one of the most memorable games I’ve ever played. “Poor effort” my butt. Even the intro alone was amazing.

Marius Urucu um, can you please explain that "a lot of flaws" part.
@MariusUrucu6 жыл бұрын
Derr Rtee Sure. Framerate drops, the wildcard that is the Werehog, the medal collecting, framerate drops, rather slippery controls, framerate drops, homing attack/air dash using the same button as air boost, framerate drops, drifting is way too loose... Did I mention framerate drops?
@derrrtee6 жыл бұрын
Marius Urucu ok first of all yes, the framedrops exist here but they're not that bad on x360. Werehog isn't actually that frequent in the game, 50/50 with day stages. Lmao, medal collecting? Seriously? It's basic easy exploration of stages, nothing bad.(in day stages you don't need to search for them, you should just be good in the levels) Slippery controls? Not really, you can easily get used to it. Airboost/homing attack is a little problem you can get used to. And drifting is very simple to do here lol. You just shouldn't boost while drifting.
@MariusUrucu6 жыл бұрын
I had the PS3 version, I actually like the Werehog, the medals don't bother me but I still count it as a flaw, the controls are slippery compared to Generations and the air boost/homing attack mapping is still a flaw minor as it is for some. Also try drfiting at the beginning of Empire City... you know the spot. Flaws are flaws, don't make excuses for them... I still like Unleashed though. :)

It's personally not my favorite in the series, but it's definitely in my top ten favs in the series and I think the negative reviews on it does not do it justice at all. Even then and now, I think the graphics are dang beautiful to look at. Love the music as well! There are a a lot of good ideas here I'd love to see Sonic Team expand upon. As for GameSpot's and IGN's bullshit "reviews", anyone having any interest in Sonic Unleashed should ignore them and play it.

Sonic Unleashed needs a really solid remaster to address the flaws!
@entertainmentwizard27036 жыл бұрын
All of that but even more, I found some of the jumping and swinging mechanics for the Warehog need to be improved and either have an option to remove the sun and moon medals or change it to how it works in the Wii version where the day time stages you earn the sun medals based off your performance instead of getting lucky and spotting them while speeding along and break neck speeds and just find the moon medals in the night stages! I think if the time is taken to do a really solid remaster Sonic Unleashed could be really good!
@entertainmentwizard27036 жыл бұрын
Maybe in the night time stages but when your boosting the day time stages it can be way to easy to speed right by one and miss it, the Wii version corrected this issue for the day time stages by having you earn the sun medals based on your performance in the stages and I think that's the better design choice!

Sonic unleashed is a game that was under appreciated in its time (2008) and now *seems* to be over appreciated now. Some people go as far as to want an unleashed 2. (Which I don’t agree with). Unleashed is an amazing game and a fun experience but like many games it does contain flaws. Sonic doesn’t have the best control when drifting, he’s quite slippery and has little traction and his jump makes platforming (whenever that is necessary) difficult for some people (For me the jump was fine). This is fixed in generations. The werehog doesn’t have a drop shadow and sometimes grabbing on ledges can be irresponsive. Platoons of enemies make the game drag and the battle theme interrupts the night theme. Collecting sun and moon medals (debatable I never had a issue finding them but the sonics make it hard to collect them within stages) The frame rate drops a bit but that doesn’t completely ruin the experience. Besides that these flaws are not enough to say this game is bad. This game unfortunately was a victim to the scorned fanbase after 06 so future titles wouldn’t get a fair criticism as the wounds of many fans were still too sensitive, the werehog concept was like rubbing salt on that sensitive wound. However time has now passed and wounds have healed allowing people to see that, infact the pros overshadow the cons from the beautiful visuals to the amazing music. Captivating story telling which captured sonics personality to the T. Unleashed provides a world experience and it felt alive. The game introduced the boost in 3D for the first time and nearly perfected it. The werehog, unnecessary as it may be to sonics gameplay style, didn’t change his character, personality or his role to the story. His control and movement was precise and his variety of combos provided for interesting combat. (But it can get repetitive with the waves of never ending enemies). Night stages imo had some decent platforming gimmicks, if that was maintained with less forced combat I’m sure they would have been more tolerable and stages would have ended much quicker (e.g eggmanland you can skip enemies). Sonic unleashed was ahead of its time. This game is filled to the brim with love, care and detail. From sonics model to the cgi cutscenes and even the hub worlds that some found pointless, even creating townspeople to communicate too. Some people don’t realise what they have until it’s gone and that’s why people are showing their love for the game now. It’s been 10 years. This is the appreciation the game should have had from day 1. Unfortunately it took a few unsatisfying titles for people to recognise just how great “sonics world adventure” actually was. This is not just my favourite Morden sonic title but it is my all time favourite sonic game and I loved it from day 1 but I’m not blind to its issues. So it really makes me happy to see people finally recognising this game for what it really is. (Sorry for the long comment I just have a lot appreciation for this game I’m sure you lot could relate with your favourite game).

Great review, as per the usual. Sonic Unleashed truly felt like a step in the right direction if nothing else for the series. Sonic Unleashed did what '06 couldn't, and that was to redefine Sonic into something not before very possible. They put so much passion into this game, and it shows. Hell, I can't tell if Sonic Forces looks better than Unleashed or not, and that really says something about how well this game holds up.
@LeopoldLitchenstein6 жыл бұрын
Sean Wilson Simply put Forces doesn't look better, but that's because of artstyle. Unleashed, Colors, and Generations all shared a realistic artstyle but with cartoony environments, which did look great and still do to this day (even Colors, though not HD, is a beautiful Wii game). Lost World and Forces have a cartoony artstyle so a lot of attention to detail was lost, but Forces definitely didn't look as good as Lost World did, even with the small amount of details it does still have.
@jacobsimoneau1016 жыл бұрын
well i think they both look equally as good but unleashed has better animation and it has an amazingly looking intro that forces doesn't.
@meerkatrat14595 жыл бұрын
@@LeopoldLitchenstein @Jacob Simoneau Yup! I really hope Sonic games going forward just go back to the art style Unleashed, Colors and Generations shared. Also not only does Sonic Forces have a weird art style, the animations in that game are just lazy. When Modern Sonic runs at a normal pace the 2 spikes on his back literally clip through, in and out of the quills on his head. It's very easy to notice and it just looks bad! Just the animations in Forces aren't very fluid like they were in previous games. Also Modern Sonic has no idle animation, he doesn't even blink his eyes. Talk about lazy...

I always look forward to your reviews because unlike a lot of others yours never feel like you're trying to jump on the hate bandwagon and just repeating points others have picked on so much that it gets boring. When you do voice complaints about the game it actually feels like these are things that you genuinely disliked about it. The way you talk about each game makes it clear that you actually played through it properly and didn't stop half way just to say "yeah I played it and it sucks" (or the opposite). When there's something you enjoyed about a game you don't sweep it under the rug just and use the negative aspects to make the game look as shitty as possible. Yet at the same time you also address the problems a game has and/or things you personally didn't enjoy as well as mentioning enjoyable things without gushing over them. It's just so enjoyable to watch these and know beforehand that whatever you say about any of the games you review is done in a respecful way even when it's about poorly made games (or ports in this case) like the GBA port of Sonic 1. That also makes it very easy to, at the very least, acknowledge the negative and/or less enjoyable aspects you talk about, even if I don't always agree with all of them. Also, when you talk about problems with the gameplay your choice of footage is excellent. Obvioulsy the way a game controls or feels is hard to describe (though you do a good job of trying to convey it), especially since a lot of the time it's up to personal preference on how much you like the controls (I for example cannot stand Sonic Colors' controls) but when you talk about things like in this video here with the problem of figuring out where to go for example, the footage you used conveys the problem you talk about very very well (same goes for the other problems you listed) So yeah keep up your good work with these awesomely done reviews :)

Honestly Sonic Unleashed is a game that SEGA and Sonic Team still had the guts to mix up the formula and put all their heart and soul into the development and marketing of it despite the controversy and negative backlash of Sonic The Hedgehog 2006. Sonic Unleashed has a lot positive things that makes it stand out from the rest of 3D Sonic games: -Good story with balance of lighthearted and dark. -Enjoyable characters and NPC with personality. -Accurate representation of Sonic's attitude and personality. -Awesome graphics for the gameplay and cutscenes and incredible/beautiful CGI cutscenes. -Two cool styles of gameplay. -An incredible and memorable soundtrack. -Medals and collectibles for the replay value. -Basically travel around the world for the sense of adventure (in Japan the game's called Sonic World Adventure). -A somewhat RPG system? -A sound test, cutscene viewer, artwork of the game, a glosary, and funny and enjoyable bonus videos with Sonic and Chip which i think it is really neat that Sonic Team went out of their way to create and add something extra. -The game is hard and challenging. I acknowledge that it has some flaws but they're not major things that are worth losing our sleep for (i.e. the frame rate issues like where it's only apparent in just Empire Citys' hub world, but in the stages i think only in Adabat Day and in the majority in the night stages but the frame drops are not drastic nor constant and it shouldn't hinder anyone's game experience and i like to think that it happens because of all the rendering and details in the graphics of everything in the background and foreground; the enemy placements for the Werehog and constant battle music, it does get annoying that the night music gets interrupted with every enemy encounter). Also why do people dislike the Werehog, did they seriously expect his gameplay to be fast paced or what?, because i thought it was made pretty obvious to everyone with the trailers and the Werehog mini movie that Sonic loses his super speed in exchange for raw strength. Sonic Unleashed is a game that kept its promises and was delivered exactly as it was intended without any misleading information (unlike Sonic Forces with all the mislead hype and information of the return of 4 villains with 2 of them that we didn't get to battle at all and a new apparently dangerous and intimidating enemy) but still the Sonic community and game journalists treated Unleashed like if it was a sub-par game. But all in all the fact is that Sonic Unleashed is a perfect 3D Modern Sonic game with a deserving score between 9.3 and 10.

The honest review of Sonic Unleashed that mainstream video game reviewers never gave us. Personally, my biggest issue with Unleashed is the mandatory medal collecting. I don’t think exploring the level has to be mandatory for progression in a Sonic game. Since the gameplay style is good enough the replay simply for fun, I see the medal collecting as completely unnecessary. The Wii/PS2 version gave you medals based on your rank after the level. That’s better, at least. I’m glad that there is more appreciation for Unleashed. Generations’ Modern Sonic gameplay was a step forward with better air control, separating the homing attack and air boost buttons, and improving the drift.

Glad to see a good review about this game without going with the sonic is a bad series stigma. I'm content that people are finally appreciating this game for what it is, but maybe it's getting to much praise as of recent in my honest opinion. Still, there's no question that the game had a lot of ambition, especially when this game came right after the infamous disaster for a game series known as sonic 06. I can see myself going back to the game every now and then. However i still had my own issues with the day and night time stages in terms of controls, portions of the level design and the horrendous framerate this game suffers on the 7th generation game consoles (makes me wish there was a pc port someday). To keep things short, i enjoyed sonic unleashed for what it is and it makes me wish that it wasn't so heavily bashed when it was released back in 2008

When you just realise how much passion and love has been putten in a game and compare it to the newer lack luster tittles (colors,generations,forces) You can really start to see how much this game is actully great. So underrated.
@fruitlion86 жыл бұрын
I don't think Colours and Generations are lackluster; they tidied up the daytime stages found here and freshened them up with new ideas. Unleashed however is definitely unfairly bashed.

Colors was trying too hard to please the "Sonic and Tails cartoon" crowd, and the levels boring with the wisp puzzle segments breaking the level momentum 80% of the time (DS version was great though. Wii version was not that good, just vastly overrated) Generations was great. not as great production wise, clearly there was not much love put into it but the level design in that game was better tbh. Forces was just *dissapointing* , to put it nicely.
@genericweeb73006 жыл бұрын
MaleLucarioFTW it was just praised way too much, that's all. otherwise it's a fine game. (still better than Forces imo :P) and on the subject the writing being on par with SA, i may have to disagree: Colors does have some good moments. but while Colors fall flat in it's attempt at humor, SA's story is intentionally cheesy (and cringey to some extent) because it was design to live out B-rated action movie or superhero tropes.

sonic unleashed is about balance, even the story is about light gia and dark gia being opposites yet working together to recreate history over and over. it shows in the gameplay too. the wererhog is almost the exact opposite then normal sonic, yet there still both enjoyable. this game as a whole presents the very important lesson about how everything in existence has an opposite, and we need to appreciate both in order to understand, and except most things. sadly the toxic sonic fanbase just jumped on the bandwagon that the werehog sucked and the game was just "half way good", because we were to naive to find the purpose of this game sooner. its funny seeing people start finally realizing this game is really good 10 years after its release xD.

I'm happy there are some people who evaluate the night levels thoroughly instead of saying "It's not Sonic, the gameplay doesn't fit. It's bad!" I don't understand how Sonic Adventure 2 is considered the best 3D Sonic game to many people. Why do people hate Unleashed for the Werehog stages while the mech stages and treasure hunt stages in Adventure 2 are completely ignored when it comes to determine the fan favourites? In both games the non-Sonic stages take much more than half of the entire playtime. Also, I kind of like the design of the werehog. Just the name is very unfortunate. Man Pig. Here in Germany it's Werigel (Man Hedgehog) Makes more sense. Another fantastic video. I discovered your channel yesterday and watched like 12 videos. You always evaluate the games fairly. Even though I don't always agree with you. ;) Update: Just discovered you reviewed SA2 as well. I will check it out right now!

I absolutely love your style of review, so far it's heavily in depth and you actually mention only things that actually matter. unlike most others especially Sonic "fans", who always try to be excessively edgy, try too hard to be funny(probably for the sake of avoiding criticism) and most of the time just straight up *biased* . on that note, will you be reviewing Black Knight or Secret Rings in the future?

Over time I've seen more people warm up to this game and I'm proud of those gamers/sonic fans who have started to like this game more. Unleashed is pretty fun to play and watch it feels like a good modern take of a light hearted story similar to the 16bit games. It also gets rid of all of those swarms of random sonic friends and rivals (Sorry Blaze, Fang, Vector. Love you guys I've got no beef with you lot.). This is personally my favourite 3d sonic game, it doesn't go overboard with deep emotional edgy storylines, the gameplay sticks to two simple styles, each level even the final level is really fun to play (it depends on your skill I'm just used to hard levels.), I actually like Professor Pickle, Chipp, Unleashed has alot of great Dr Robotnick moments, jason griffith gives the best sonic performance in the video game series. When sonic colours came out I love that game to but the new writing direction and voice actors (mostly Roger as Sonic) the humour and light hearted tone feels unbearable more than funny. It's not a big deal but... I do get this urge to skip cutscenes in some of the Roger Sonic cutscenes.

Ugh, you sound like a typical classic Sonic purists. You rule out Sonic's friends with absolutely no reasoning hate on deeper storylines for no reason. Also, Sonic colors? The game that has you platforming through bad blocky 2D level design for 90% of the game? Another thing, genesis Sonic games are not lighthearted. They're neutral in tone.

One thing that Unleashed deserves major credit for is its characterization of Sonic. While the Werehog may seem like an awkward addition in this game, it does fit in the story and has an effect on Sonic. Sonic becomes depressed when he has to deal with the possibility that he will be stuck like this forever. This is first seen when Amy mistakes Werehog Sonic for normal Sonic in a Spagonia night cutscene. After she leaves, Sonic walks away, sulking. It’s pretty telling that Sonic reacts this way after Amy doesn’t chase after him like she usually does. It shows Sonic’s feelings towards her.
@rynobehnke82896 жыл бұрын
Well I would give Unleashed Credit for it IF this plot point wouldn't have been never mentioned again after its introduction AND if Unleashed wouldn't have disrespectfully devolved Amy's and Tails Characters so much there there were cowardliness here than in even Sonic 2/Sonic Cd.

People didn’t dislike the werehog because it was sonic, they disliked it because of the gameplay. Changing the skin to knuckles doesn’t make a difference, people will complain just like they did for knuckles’ treasure hunting stages in sa2.

The reason I commented this is because most reviewer complain about the werehog coming out of no where but at least with knuckles it would have made a little bit more sense
@dreamcastdazia47536 жыл бұрын
Yoknuckles2 Those people had never played a game that wasn't a performer game before. The werehog a very well made beat em up gameplay style. That's what it should have played like. Only problem really was the fact that the enemies where too easy. Other than that nothing wrong with it. Levels could have been shorter though, did kinda drag out so I guess that's something people could argue to be an actual problem with the werehog. I personally like the slow paced adventure though...

I absolutely love this game, I finally got to play it over the last few weeks with a new Xbox 360, and I genuinely think all the reviews just slammed it because it was trendy. This game is amazing, but cripplingly misunderstood. I love the world adventure theme, seeing all the unique towns and people, I love the boost gameplay and the beautiful locations, and I love the night art style and even enjoy the night gameplay. I think most game reviewers just saw the werehog, thought: “This is stupid, I want to go fast, get me out of this.” and then button mashed the entire stage, rushing it as much as possible, and finishing it with very few medals. If you don’t do that, and instead learn the combos and moves, the beat-em-up gameplay is pretty fun, and the slower platforming is nice in concept and usually fun. The night stages give you a really nice calming down period, the day stages are exhilarating and fast and can really wear you out, then the night stages give you some time to calm down and get ready for some more speed. It’s definitely not perfect, but from my experience almost everything people complain about in this game is massively overblown and a lot of people just jumped on the bandwagon of mocking the game. The medals especially really seemed like an overblown issue. I agree, the medal requirements for Adabat is strangely high and a big jump compared to the previous levels , but on my save getting the extra 30-40 medals I needed wasn’t hard, and was actually really fun! I think a lot of people just didn’t explore at all and got stuck with too few medals, which made them feel like the game was forcing them to replay the “awful and repetitive” night stages instead of giving them fun day stages because Sega was lazy. But in truth, if you explore in your first run, you get a lot of the medals you need, and the act of finding the rest is a really fun challenge because it just means replaying the levels in new ways to find them, which is something most players will end up doing anyway, you’ll replay the stages to get better ranks and set new times, so why not give you another objective to do on these stages? I love the medals as they give you a much better motivation to explore and replay them, much more than the red things from Generations. Also, having the medals encourage replayability helps you earn XP, which you put into the werehog, letting you upgrade your skills and unlock new abilities. It’s such a fun feedback loop of levelling up which makes getting XP faster which makes levelling up more fun, it’s amazing and made me want to play even more, I wish the XP system returned but most people didn’t really understand it, a lot of people just thought: “What, I need to upgrade my speed? Shouldn’t I be as fast as possible from the start, since I’m SONIC?” and then poured all of their day and night XP into speed like fools, making controlling Sonic harder due to the increased speed, and leaving their werehog massively underpowered, making the night stages much worse. Your review is really great and I agree with most of your points, I love this game a huge amount but even I can see it’s not perfect, although it’s definitely one of the best Sonic games ever. I think a really simple remaster with less required QuickTime events, less death traps, 1080p60 gameplay, less required Pickle visits, improved camera (especially in the night stages, it’s always moving and giving you weird angles which makes tightrope walking really tough.) and an option to make the battle music only trigger for bigger battles and bosses so it doesn’t drown out the lovely music of the night stages. (ideally making the night music resume after the battle too rather than restarting.) I really think it deserves another chance because so many people just misunderstood it. Some of it is definitely the game’s fault, as it really doesn’t encourage you to use combos or to hunt for medals, but this game is way better than most people think.

Not gonna lie, I only got the game to listen to Sonic's death scream (werehog) when he falls into a bottonless pit. My cousin's husband had it for his 360 and he when he died on the the first night stage, I almost crapped my pants. His TV was up pretty loud too, so that didn't help.I got the game to see if it was Sonic. I was so surprised that it was in fact Sonic that screamed. It's so spine-chilling, honestly.

I think the biggest problem not only with this game but with every game that tries to mix two or more completely different gameplays is that there is always the risk a person will only like one of them. It's not even the matter of if one of the gameplay styles is better or worse. It's a matter of personal preferences and what a person is looking for, therfore making completely different styles of gameplay in one game is allways a risk

I've only played the Wii version of this game which I uploaded footage when it was brand new in 2008. The HD version looks like a much better game than critics at the time said. I like how there isn't a hub world on the PS2/Wii version, but from what I see here, there are more moves you can use as the Werehog for the 360/PS3 version.
@broom28394 жыл бұрын
As somebody who has played both, Werehog is somewhat better in the HD version except for a single stage being 15-30 minutes long, but Sonic himself in the Wii version is just much better in the daytime stages due to better level design and superior controls regardless of which controller you use. I find the Werehog to be the best part of both games honestly because his levels feel the most fleshed out and he controls very well. Personally I think the wii version is much better though overall despite the difference in hardware.
