Fun fact: The music was actually going to be for the Nack the Weasel (a.k.a. Fang the Sniper) boss fight, one of only two boss fights planned for the game, the other one being metal sonic. Unfortunately, the boss fight/level is lost but hopefully still exists somewhere...

This version by XL2 is pretty good. Sonic both has some momentum but is able to turn easily, making adjustments on the fly easy enough.

The environmental polygons run so smooth! As a saturn owner... that's pretty impressive. The quads in 3d environments usually jump around (watch video of tomb raider saturn or panzer dragoon saga to see what I mean).

For the Saturn this would have looked awesome. Also, can I just say how horrifying this somehow looks? Metal has some form of uncanniness going on in this take, and yet I love it.
@uptowndanram67533 жыл бұрын
The story behind this game is fascinating, but it definitely would've gotten its lunch eaten by Super Mario 64 and maybe even Crash Bandicoot in the Fall of '96. Sad that Sonic World (Sonic Jam) and 3D Blast's bonus stages is all we got of polygonal Sonic on the Saturn.
@TailsOfSaturn3 жыл бұрын
Yea I think your right. There was somewhat of a disdain of 2D in the 5th gen, maybe in 94/95 this could have gone down well though. Its a shame, with hindsight this is probably more impressive on a technical level than some of the fully 3D iterations of the day. That sprite is very high res with lots of frames of animation, though I certainly think XL2s project here is more impressive than the STI demo from back in the day (although its hard to tell from the limited footage we have). A full game of Sonic World would have put Sonic in the running against Mario and Crash though. I'd love to see a homebrewer do Sonic World style levels focused on exploration and challenges as a means to access the faster paced special stages from Sonic 3D on Saturn.

@@TailsOfSaturn Totally agree with you there. 'Sonic World' always looked to be functioning as an over-world zone for a Sonic game that never came to be on Saturn.
@EOTA5642 жыл бұрын
My impression is that this game was an experimental gamble which didn’t pay off. No one really knew how to transition Sonic from a 2D to 3D within the technical limitations of the Saturn at the time. I think everyone gets too tied up in the idea that Saturn sonic needed to be a fully realised free roaming 3D platformer. Yes, Mario 64 moved the goal posts but Crash Bandicoot was a 3D platformer plat played very much like a 2D platformer. Games such as Nights and even Pandemonium! showed how 32bit technology could be used to deliver impressive looking titles that still played in a single plane.

@@mark030aI’m gonna mention sonic forces because in that boss fight/level he’s huge in his normal form even if it was a fake metal sonic which honestly doesn’t even make sense because unlike shadow metal sonic is still on eggmans side so eggman could’ve easily sent the real one to do things for him without needing the phantom ruby to make a clone plus they decided to copy shadow but not silver or knuckles when they’ve both been rivals/enemies in sonics past aswell.

While I agree with what you are saying, the Boss Engine(the one in the video) was very good. If they hadn't been split into team two with two engines, the other one being made on PC then being ported to Saturn, they could have made a technically solid game.
