People forget if this released before Crash or Mario 64 I reckon people would have still been quite impressed with it. I mean imagine if this were late 1995 and 3d being experimented those days, it probably would have been looked at somewhat fondly at the time.

@@That_Guy- It wasn't the dev's fault, Bernie Stolar never asked Naka permission before he gave it to them. Then the one who was doing all the work on the project got extremely sick and couldn't finish it. IMHO they should have made Naka and Sonic Team do a 3D Sonic game first and have it ready by 1996 at the latest. Letting them do Nights Into Dreams left the Saturn without a 3D Sonic platformer for its entire lifespan. Alternatively, they could have had Traveler's Tales do a fully 3D Sonic platformer instead of Sonic Blast and Sonic R. They managed to achieve polygon transparencies and good graphics with Sonic R, it's just too bad all that effort went into a racing game instead of a platformer.
@overwatch7614 жыл бұрын
It's hard to know. Nights has a very short draw distance. 3D worlds weren't a good fit for Saturn. A 2D Sonic with fancier graphics would've done the trick. Or perhaps the Crash style of bendy corridors to hide draw distance and reduce load on system.

Fact Check: The Sonic X-Treme Boss Engine was *not* based on NiGHTS. Chris Coffin the coder has refuted such claims fully. It was mostly using tools created from Panzer Dragoon II - which Sonic Team also used for NiGHTS. The full time window from when STI saw the NiGHTS engine code, to when executives ordered them to erase all copies (at the demands of Yuji Naka) was less than a week. Some of this confusion comes from Christmas NiGHTS having a Sonic mode Easter Egg, which was mostly an internal snub by Naka to his former STI teammates, that Sonic Team was well ahead of where they were (to the detriment of course of Sega itself).

It's a real shame they Sega made no real effort into bringing out a decent Sonic game like this to the Saturn. It may have helped improve sales for the console. When both Saturn and Playstation were launched I went to my local "video shop" and rented both consoles before I decided which one to buy. This was before Sony released any serious 3D games and I actually preferred the Saturn at the time. I bought Saturn in January 1996. I still have that console in storage today. Just a few more great games could have saved Sega. What a waste.
@neobogard4 жыл бұрын
The real reason why Sonic Xtreme game was never released for the Saturn was because at that point of time Sonic was the main rival for Mario and any Sonic game they released had to live up to the quality of the Mario game on the rival console which at the time Sega wasn't able to do. Sega just didn't have the time and resources to come up with a Sonic game that rivalled Mario 64.
@Klonoahedgehog4 жыл бұрын
Sega of America really didn't care about the Saturn at all. A lot of its big killer apps stayed Japan exclusive.
@neobogard4 жыл бұрын
@@Klonoahedgehog It's not that Sega of America didn't care, It's just that Sega of Japan design the Saturn as a console to mainly fit the Arcade scenes at the time to emphasise on fighters and Shooters with great 2D capabilities and which Sega of America didn't want much to do with. So what we ended up with was a console which Sega of America wasn't interested in what the console was designed for which resulted in a console that consisted mostly of terrible games which Sega of America thought was the right way to go because they were either digitised or in 3D despite it being a pile of crap.
@Zaphod-ef9yz4 жыл бұрын
@@neobogard There was a lot that the Saturn was capable of that was never realised due to lack of development support to third parties too as I understand it. Some of it's best 3D stuff features many work arounds. You raise a good point though about the arcades. Saturn was quite the "2D Powerhouse" it has been said. I can't speak for Japan at the time but this came at a time arcades were dying off. I don't think the shoddy port of arcade flagship Virtua Fighter 1 helped either in that respect.
@THENAMEISQUICKMAN4 жыл бұрын
It also doesn't help how much Sega of Japan were screwing around Sega of America during the Saturn era. Sonic was much more successful in the west than the east, so Sonic took a backseat. Sega of Japan basically sacrificed every bit of goodwill they had with fans just so they could finally beat Nintendo in their home country. Which they did, as the Saturn outsold the N64 there. Too bad it cost them everything else.

Apologies for anyone who got an empty page clicking on the Hidden Palace download links. Here are the real download links: hiddenpalace.org/Sonic_X-treme_(V40_prototype) hiddenpalace.org/Sonic_X-treme_(Jul_14,_1996_prototype) hiddenpalace.org/Sonic_X-treme_(Jul_18,_1996_prototype)

Ugh, for some reason, KZbin keeps ignoring the final bracket in the link, so it sends you to a broken page. I've updated the links. Cheers,

1:11 And this alone is why I love the Saturn. The Dreamcast may have been sega’s final Magnus opus, but the Saturn is one of my favorite Sega consoles of all time. The design, the many different startups, and overall the pure potential it had! It sucks that Sega’s poor choices and the PS1 screwed up the Saturns future…

"But I know what question stands in your mind! When am I going to get a haircut?- I mean, does it work on real hardware?" ;)
