I'm with you on NYC Ghosts + Flowers. It feels like their most self-consciously poetic record. Of course they're a very literate band but Thurston is pretty deep into the world where avant garde poetry and avant noise intersect, given his books of poetry like Alabama Wildman or the collab with John Kinsella, The Weave, and his poetry publishing imprint, Flowers and Cream, and NYC Ghosts and Flowers comes, I feel like, from that realm. As a poet myself it's a realm I dig,

Thanks for this very educational review of Sonic Youth's discography. I remember them being around back in the day, but it was not until this past year that I started listening to them. Sister was my first album and I really loved it. Then I heard Daydream Nation and loved it as well, but Sister was my favorite of the two. Now, using your video as a guide, I am looking forward to checking out their other albums. Thanks again, Eddy. Jeff

In the late 80’s I discovered Thrasher and Spin magazine. I begged my mom for a subscription for both(I lived in a small town where these magazines didn’t exist). I think it was a review of Goo, but I was visiting my aunt in Dallas and was able to go to a record store. I found ‘Bad Moon Rising’ on tape. The music made no sense to me but I kept listening over and over. Eventually I ordered Sister and EVOl from STS. Sonic Youth defined my youth in a way. Then Pump Up The Volume came out.

I’ve always dug it, thought it was more or less the same kind of thing as the SST albums except bigger and badder. Same goes for Goo, for that matter, except that one is a bit more restrained and “professional”. I thought Dirty nailed their new, more commercial approach whereas that one smoothed things over just a tad much. FWIW I always thought Youth Against Fascism was dumb on purpose, or maybe smart dumb is the better way of saying it. I love a political song that just comes right out and says “yeah the president sucks.” Which one? I dunno, you pick. I took it as a bit of non-non-parody that also just rocked.

Goo and Dirty are some of their best, most accesible albums and Daydream Nation is arguably is them at their best... but there's something about Sister that is really special to me. The constant shifts in tempo, the almost progressive feel to the songs, and how well they balance the riffs with the noise. It's the album I return to the most and it's the one I have the most fun listening to!

I got into Sonic Youth quite late. I was allready in my early twenties when Murray Street came out. It wasn't because a lack of trying though. Washing Machine and A Thousand Leaves aren't exactly ideal gateway albums. I allso read Kim Gordon's book Girl In A Band. It made it quite clear that it's no use to ever hope for a reunion. Imagine not just finding out your husband is cheating on you, but that everyone in the band allready knows about it.
@EdwinCannistraci2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Before editing the video, I talked more about Kim and Thurston's split and threw some shade towards Thurston, but then decided it was a personal affair and not appropriate to comment on it. But I'm very sympathetic towards Kim and I guess people reading between the lines of my video -- with all my Team Kim talk -- probably will pick up on that.

With all due respect, I think you overestimate Kim Gordon's 'songwriter' role. First, SY worked, for the most part, as a whole, where everybody contributed with different parts to one song (and that even includes Steve). There were rarly one single writer. The singing role in a song usually indicates the lyric writer (here yes, there were individual contributers). But yes, the idea Kim 'wrote the songs' she sings in SY is simply wrong. Nevertheless, great work! You're a true 'sonic enthusiast' and a smart guy with the right ideas in your mind. Kudos!
@EdwinCannistraci Жыл бұрын
Fair point and I probably should've specified I was talking about the lyrics and vocals when saying a song was a "Kim song", a "Thurston song", or a "Lee song". Obviously the music was a total collaborative effort, but at the same time, whoever was writing the lyrics and singing helped give each song an individualistic character. For example, "Kool Thing" would simply not be "Kool Thing" if Thurston or Lee had wrote the lyrics and sung the song. They'd have a totally different approach. Anyway, thanks for watching and for commenting. Always nice when someone thinks I have "the right ideas." 😉👍🏼

Sorry for the comment overload (but I am commenting as I watch): I strongly disagree about the Youth Against Fascism. It is a protest song but also features Ian Mackaye on guitar and I think it is also the tribute to Fugazi and the political side of punk.
