It's actually not a rumor, it's a fact. Yuji Naka requested Sonic to be added into Super Smash Bros. Melee, but he ended up asking sometime near of the end of the development cycle for the game, so, they ended up removing Sonic due to time constraints. However, Sonic got to join the battle in the next entry in the series, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
