Objectively speaking, if something fails to be what it's trying to be, then it failed to be what it's trying to be. Sonic forces is badly written because it failed to be a serious story, it has several elements that have almost if not literally 0 relevance, and the villain that the game has been building towards as the climactic final showdown of the game... just bounces because eggman has to be the final boss. Because he does On the other hand, something like sonic superstars is well written because it sets up a character (trip), who has social anxiety and follows around the bad guys because they're the only ones that keep her around, to betray them and become friends with sonic and co after Amy was nice to her You can like or dislike things, I don't think anyone (sane) is gonna tell you otherwise, and I like things that I can find tons of flaws in, and don't care for many things that I recognize are great. We can separate objectivity from subjectivity

@@Nativefall frontiers was kinda balanced though like it had it's moments serious moments in times and sometimes had it's rare funny moments here and there like when he called eggman((dr.egoman)) or the refrence he was talking about his end goals in the game) too sonic frontiers wasn't too dark and edgy but wasn't too silly and funny the tone of story is balanced here.

@@Nativefall I think that an attempt at mediating the debate is still better than going full throttle in one direction. At the very least the story would have some scenes that benefit one side and other scenes that benefit the other. Unleashed did this pretty well with how the game was for the most part a “trip around the world” plot in a Pixar style but it had themes like day and night and good and evil as represent by the Gaia deities.

I mean, there's an other piece of media about a young blue anthropomorphic animal (with an even younger, less confident orange one often following them around), that became EXTREMELY popular with all ages. I grew up reading the Archie Comics, particularly Ian Flynn's run with the characters from issue #160 onwards. Sonic is at my very favorite when it takes itself seriously but still has fun with the whole thing. Serious, dramatic moments like the Enerjak arc or the Eggman Wars and the Moebius invasion were also able to have fun and made for an excellent reading experience.

Basically: we need a balance. BUT games with only serious and only family friendly tones can work. With its one, the other, or both, what really matters is good writing. And imo, I think the only game to actually have bad writing is Sonic Forces. Colors, Generations, and Lost World don't have bad writing. It just has less involved writing. You might also say games like 06 or Shadow have as well, but I'm not familiar with them so you can tell me if you want. All in all, the problem was never the tone, but the writing. But people don't care about the writing and only care about the tone and characterization. Which is why, like Nativefall said, this debate will never end. I think Sonic Frontiers maneges to strike a pretty good balance too, since there are quite a few goofy interactions between Sonic and the current friend of the island, but we can get deep with not only the characters but also the Starfall Islands. Yet, people don't care about writing, but only tone. Another thing about this debate I want to bring up is Sonic's characterisation. My God I hate this one. People like his classic, 2000s, and current characterization, yet hate on the ones from the meta era and IDW. What??? The thing is though, when characters are in different hands and different stories, they are going to act different. You can praise BK Sonic all you want, he does NOT fit in Colors. Just because you like it does not mean it's the only good one. Characterization is subjective, accept that. This is literally the same thing gameplay debate. Just because you like the adventure style more, doesn't mean that classic, boost, and open-zone are terrible, and "it's not sonic". They are sonic, just different takes. You can critique the inconsistency creating those different things, but you can't critique the different things for being different things. Thats just dumb.

If you haven't already, you should probably read the comics to see why people actually like those serious stories to begin with. Issue 160 and onwards is why people like Ian Flynn in the first place and people just ignore it for some reason. If you like Ian's work in IDW, you'll probably like Archie too. As for Frontiers, I feel as though he did what he could with what he was given and was allowed to do. It certainly could be better but I feel it's the beginning of better things to come. People who say Ian is bad because of Frontiers are kinda missing the bigger picture.

For Chowder, you especially see a lot of it is episodes with Endive in it. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is no exception as it has the same rating. They're targeted towards older children, but still, children nonetheless

I didn't like Sonic Adventure 2 honestly. I am very much a "middle of the road" person wanting a mix of both tones ... but I don't like HOW dark the story in SA2 was. I think we can ... not have plots involving militaries murdering children? But we can also not have ... everything that Colors is, too. I think the best balance to be had is in Unleashed and Heroes. I won't comment on Frontiers' plot because that thing isn't even a game, let alone a Sonic game. It's basically Sega imitating the act of cobbling clashing assets in UE just to have SOMETHING to show at SAGE. I hate Frontiers entirely, if I didn't make myself clear lol.

Honestly being able to skip cutscenes is one of gamings best luxurys, i know for a fact if I'm playing a sonic game for whatever reason I'm purely there for gameplay. Ngl, i think Sonic Movie 2 is my favorite story in any Sonic media (besides Adventure 2). If you're gonna do a more comedy-focused take on the series (which is what the movies are going for), you gotta inject real heart into the story and make the stakes feel like they actually matter. A lesser "meta-era" version of Movie 2's story wouldn't have had the more heartfelt scenes, and would have made Eggman too much of a joke.

Now that I've realised, Sonic in the 90' would be the equivalent to Classic Dragon Ball cause the stories were simple yet very intertening (I'm not saying simple is bad Classic DB might be my favorite of then all) Then Sonic Adventure 2 would be freaking DBZ with things escalating to unimaginable levels of hights and stuff, then Sonic Colors would be Super because it's more aimed towards a new kids audience and stuff, Sonic Frontiers is probably what a new saga of DB might go like trying to make Goku more serious and etc. So then I would say that's quite something of an coincidence and path to follow even though Colors realsed in 2010 and DBZ/S Battle of Gods realesed in 2013 as the returnal of Dragon Ball, i think that just like db i like all the types of approach to all these kinds of stories even though the 2010 stories on word would have some stupid things as well as Goku characterization on Super which is something the fans most complain about, but then both Z/2000's era games have some stupid things don't let nostalgia blind you, but Dbz still a masterpiece in the end of the day, so i think that both followed some kind of similar path and you might say that dbs have some hyper serious grandios sagas like Goku Black and the Tournament of Power, something that in the 2010's era Sonic games we didn't have they were all very focused on kids, mean Sonic was always focused on the kids audience and etc, but i find these particular stories to have their charm and personality different to what some people might say, and i also think the 2010 era games have some stupid stuff even though those are peak even 06, what i can say that we can find good in the "bad" and bad in the "good", not everything is black and white, for example SA2 is one of my favorite works of fiction and yet the game does have 8000 different plot holes and stupid stuff like Sonic Team slept on their desk while making this game, i mean at that time Sonic Team and Sega in general were in suffering indeed but either say y know

I feel like the Sonic community has a twisted view on how something should be serious just look at the Insomniac Spider-Man games they did it perfectly the games just need a deep story where EVERYTHING matters and you know it would be cool if the game actually had Sonic you know actually lose some battles and for once the enemy actually seemed way more powerful and have a cool last battle where both sides beat each other so much where each side both are tired or maybe have more people than just Sonic help like Tails or something you know and they switch turns attacking the enemy because the enemy keeps beating the other one and then they both attack the enemy. I feel as though there can be a good balance between the two tones. The Archie comics mostly nailed it during the Ian Flynn run, being both dark and dramatic while also having plenty of lighthearted moments and characters to liven things up. So far, I feel like “Prime” has gotten the closest to striking that perfect balance between the two extremes - as far as Sonic shows are concerned. If the games can follow suit in that direction, we should be good to go.

I didn’t grow up in the 90’s, so I have no attachment to Sonic media from that era, but no matter how you frame it a blue hedgehog, the size of a human child, that has super speed, living in an everyday world alongside normal humans just looks goofy and I can’t take it seriously. (I definitely prefer the concept of Sonic and friends being from an alternative world where animals are just like that and Eggman is an invader of sorts)

If Sonic is for everyone, then that means both extremes can exist in their own games, if you don’t like the tone of one, you can always pick the other. What I was trying to say is that the Fanbase is never happy, because they change opinions way too often on what they want to see in a Sonic game. They can complain about something a game made but adore the same something another game made. The Fanbase itself doesn’t have any standards since people keep going back and forth on changing their fixed opinion from a game to another, if they did know what they want, then all of those debates about stories and character development that started since the early 2000’s shouldn’t exist in the first place or should have been resolved long ago instead of being a chaotic divisive mess that it is today. As an example: SA2 had a very serious story with multiple campaigns and people claim it’s the best way to do a story, but 06 literally had the same concept and people trashed on it because it takes itself too seriously with multiple campaigns. Extra note, I’m talking about the concept, not the execution (even if both have a pretty flawed execution objectively speaking). The advice I proposed is to just stop trying to argue about if a story should be serious or comedic and instead focus on if the story is good and if it works in the context of the game, sure there should be a set direction in terms of the type of story but I feel like people just overlook how well written something is and instead trash on it because it’s not up to their taste. And since there’s usually 2 mainline games releasing around the same period with both pretty drastically different story directions, then just pick the one that fits your current opinion more and don’t trash the other game because it isn’t what you wanted. Yes I do acknowledge people have different opinions and perspectives, but they also change said opinions with every game coming out. Loving one but hating the other while they do the exact same concept. Yes, the more people in a community, the more different opinions you get, but compared to literally any other franchise, this is literally one of the biggest warzones I’ve ever witnessed. I’m only expressing my view on the Fanbase, they hate pretty much everything regarding any game of franchise, regardless of the quality, yet they still eat it. They hate it but they still want it…

You don’t get it NativeFall, your whole message with this video is that sonic will do anything and everything and you can’t please everyone. But you literally can. The thing that will end all these debates is to segregate the franchise into multiple sub franchises. Have a Silly Goofy Sonic franchise of games, comics, shows, merch. And a Serious Anime-esque Sonic franchise of games, comics, shows, merch. And make sure both of these have distinctly different art styles, tone/themes, lore, voice actors, music, and character designs. So That any random person who looks at it for a few seconds for the first time can instantly tell what is this particular interpretation of sonic is targeted to. The kids or the adults. And there can be a few more sub franchises like one for fully Americanized sonic and one for Japanese sonic. We can have it all, Sega just is doing the opposite by trying to tie all sonic things into one homogeneous interpretation and depiction. Which severely limits the creative expression of the sonic franchise. It’s super strict cuz everything must be one specific way every time. No room for alternatives.

Just look at the various different interpretations of TMNT. They have something for each age range. silly and serious are all separated, with distinctly different designs so you don’t get confused as to why something that looks childish is being super serious.

Sadly is a problem that pretty much happen in every fandom: You can't please everyone, there will be people who likes more one subject and other likes another one. In this case is better offer variety but not in the aspect of 50/50 (50% family friendly and 50% serious), it's better check what group has the majority and offer a story in a variety that can please more the group in majority but still offering something to the minority (like 60/40 or 70/30 and that's it, never go over 80 because that is going to the extreme and can ruin the fun of the game). Personally I liked both the Adventures games since the distribution was like 60/40. Meanwhile with Frontiers, I played a little but the game felt like 50/50.

Honestly I know a way they could of done this with the later adventure games Have sonic heroes have a more darker tone with metal sonic and have robotization Have shadow the hedgehog include funny one liners from the other characters like sonic in the hero story And have Sonic’s story in 06 be more energetic with sonic taunting eggman like Sa1 and 2 and leaving the darker parts for shadow and silver Also while writing this I realized that shadows stories were always the best part in the adventure games

The Sonic series is ultimately a Cheesy series and while That’s not inherently a bad thing it does make the series look ridiculous to anyone outside of this series. A wise person once said that “Sonic doesn’t need a serious story, it needs a story that TAKES itself seriously.” and I think this is probably a good way to go about it even if it does make the series that much more cheesy. With all this in mind I believe that this whole controversy is stupid because it’s focusing on the wrong problem. The problem itself isn’t Way too Serious Story vs Way too Goofy Story. It should be Campiness vs. Cringe and yes there’s a difference. Campiness is where the series is self aware and knows it can get away with being goofy without sacrificing the overall tone of what the Game’s story is going for. Cringe is basically when the series tries to do something with the Story or it’s Comedy and fails. And this…is bad. The cringe is ultimately where the problem with Sonic stories should lie because when the series tries to lean into one or the other too heavily then we get nonsensical stuff like the Stories of Shadow The Hedgehog or Sonic colors. (And this is coming from someone who enjoyed ShTH’s story to an extent) both of which tried WAY too hard to appeal to the audiences they wanted in that time period. Sonic is more or less and Sandbox series. It’s a series where you can put Sonic in almost any scenario, in any story, and so long as that Story is good, compelling, and fun then you got nothing to worry about but if you go too far and try to create a story that’s so serious that it becomes illogical or a story that is almost nonexistent is filled to the brim with cheap jokes and bad one liners…then yeah you’re story is gonna suffer, no other way around that.

Sonic frontiers story is great the more serious tone is better than the light harded tone and frontiers gives so much character development to all the characters and the lore about the ancients was very interesting to I think it's an amazing story in my opinion
