For me, the irregularity is what really makes it work for Orks. Any other army and I'd probably want a much smoother finish, but just splodging it on to an Ork bike feels right - as if they're not going to just daub it on from the bucket with the nearest Grot, right? :D

Just had to say thank you for this video, particularly the process on the yellow, looking to start a bad moons army and finding a good method for yellow that looks that good has been a huge challenge. You did the same for me with your Cadian painting process as well, thank you!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
Yellow can be a real pain in the neck if you're looking to get a smooth finish with it, but I think for Orks there's something to be said for slapping it on and having it look 'just about right.' No mukkin' about wiv fancy zoggin' nonsense! ;D

All the usual caveats apply, of course. It's not going to win any prizes, but they look good and grimy on the table when they're done. :) Plus it's relatively quick to pull off, and works with all the major colour groups!
@gedmcloughlin8666 жыл бұрын
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio I think your style of painting is far more useful and relevant to the majority of painters and collectors. Especially the ones starting out new. I always felt intimidated by the 'eavy metal style tutorials.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
I think there's a lot of value in some of the other tutorials out there, particularly Warhammer TV's guides, since they're showing in detail how they achieve their own results, too. But you're right in that I think it can be a little off-putting to someone getting started when each step looks pristine alongside the next. My style looks like the dog's dinner until the last couple of brush strokes, which I think goes to show you can just clip along at your own pace as long as you're enjoying it!
@gedmcloughlin8666 жыл бұрын

Question about super-gluing, and something I have wondered about sub-assemblies too - when people use super glue to hold something in place (such as a sub-assembly part), how easy is it to actually remove from the glued part? Should it be super glue and not plastic glue? I was planning on just using that blue-tack stuff to avoid more gluing, what say ye?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
When plastic glue sets the bond is essentially both plastic surfaces 'melted' together, while superglue will split with some pressure in the right place. For the sake of painting in sub assemblies, though, blu-tac will do the job just fine. It's really a matter of preference.

Thanks for this video. I wish I'd watched this before painting my Bad Moons Shokkjump Dragsta. I really had a difficult time with the yellow (Averland Sunset and all other yellows thereafter), and while it didn't turn out terribly, I'm not thrilled about it either. This video would have saved me a lot of time and frustration. I'm glad the bikes will be okay though!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
Yellow's one of those colours where I think it helps to have a vision of what you're looking to achieve in mind. Personally, the 'Eavy Metal style of Ork painting is always a little too clean for me, but they do need to show off all the detail in the kits! When I've got them in my own grubby hands, the grimier, grungy appearance is a heck of a lot easier than layering up with nineteen coats of yellow... ;D

@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
The Casandora Yellow would probably work well over a drybrush, but I'm not sure the stippling would be the place to start unless you wanted some seriously grunge looking Fists. Though that does seem to be in vogue occasionally! Might be worth a shot all the same.

Hi, how would you go about painting the raptors chatper power armour because the gw version of going over and recess shading is quite annoying
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
I'd use the same technique as I would for Crimson Fists, Blood Angels, Salamanders - all the same method! Basecoat, drybrush then shade for the armour. For Raptors I'd start from Death Guard Green, do a very light edge drybrush of Underhive Ash and then shade the whole thing in Athonian Camoshade. If you wanted a slightly less bright edge you could try Nurgling Green.

I was going to do a genestealer cult based on either a volcanic mining planet or a frozen wasteland. Either way, I wanted the metal to look glowing hot or frosted over, depending on where i choose to place them. Any ideas on how i could achieve either technique?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
This one stumps me! To be honest, I'm not sure how I'd do hot metal without it looking like I'd painted it orange, and the chilled-over effect would be similarly difficult, I guess? This might be one for Uncle Google. You've got me there!
@darkowl96 жыл бұрын
One way that I can think of is perhaps to paint it in a scheme that has some neutral parts, but that you can then apply several thinner layers of a glaze with, so that it looks like it's "lit" from a side by warmth or cool, depending on what you're going for. Similar to how Sorastro glazed IG-88 from Imperial Assault (can look it up here on YT), though there he was going for the popular "orange/blue" feel so popular in movie artwork :)

No clue how you keep doing this, I love the instructions and all but you always have 1 colour on the model that I really don't like. For 90%of the video. Then you add 2 layers and everything comes together. This entire video I was thinking o hated the green and then you fix it in 2 layers... you sir are a magician
@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
Crack up. ;D It might sound trite, but it's true that 'you're not finished until you're finished.' Sometimes those first couple of layers can look horrible, but you've got to keep the faith and trust that following the next couple of steps will give you the look you want! Trust me!

@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
This method would look a little too patchy on a Marine to work, I think. Unless you were deliberately going all-out grimy and battered, but then I'd probably start from an Averland Sunset spray and stipple on a brighter yellow instead - start higher and do some even more lurid highlights!
