Sonix's INSANE Edgeguards on Sparg0! - GOML Tournament Analysis

GOML was full of upsets and exciting matches, and the grand finals was no different. So today we're gonna dive into how Sonix won GOML. Spoilers I guess.

This grand finals match shows how well sonix studied the mu against Aegis. He is indeed a top 5 player no doubt. Spargo had a nice losers run with both cloud and aegis. The vod review on these matches shows how careful you have to be when offstage. You could also factor in that Spargo may have been panicking in these situations but a lot of aegis players do the same. Loved this vod review and i can’t wait to see more.

With this being imo, Sonic's hardest matchup, this really showed some of the weaknesses that Aegis has against Sonic. It's tough, but it's still doable as him.

From the way Sonix described his playstyle the more he knows who he's fighting the less he camps. Before he didn't know Aegis as well most likely so he tried to be defensive but bro deffo grinded it

While Sonic has very punishing ways to force an edgeguard in his favor, which is crazy, but the ways he got it was mostly because Aegis isn’t as safe on shield and it shows how Mythra while very good in neutral, really can’t just mash on your shield for free which was amazing

This was a classic case of Coinbox Finals being played so often among these two players. Even in pointing out these mistakes, consider that these two have grinded for a long while. The decisions made on both ends were more than likely smart given games 1 and 2 respectively. But at the end of the day, there's only so much you can react to given how reactionary these two players are. Sonix had the upper hand here because he played better neutral and advantage overall which made me realize that disadvantage is much scarier when the % lead climbs as an Aegis player. Offstage, I'd be scared shitless trying so many different ways to recover back on stage even if my options outnumber Sonic's edgeguard attempts.

Offstage is the only "flaw" I feel aegis has as a character. She's like.. probably the best onstage? But it's that area the aegis players seem to struggle with most. And I'm just like.. Yeah it's an issue, but is it really that much? Sonix and ofc the character are great at edgeguarding in general, but when I see Cosmos or Leo it's just like "dude you're panicking so hard.." yeah you _are_ likely going to get edgeguarded a few times playing this character. But that's all the more reason why you shouldn't panic. Not offstage, not on ledge, it's just the one place you have to be ice cold in. Min min and fox players can do it so why not aegis players? Nice analysis

its soo insane to see how early kills sonix is getting with his edgeguards every time. sparg0 is one of the best at recovering with characters that others claim exploitable in that aspect but I never saw someone punish sparg0 like sonix does here

This is one of the downsides to a pocket character in general. Not quite having all their intricacies totally sharp and fresh. Also something that was kind of asking to happen since SoniX got this exact matchup as a counter multiple times now so he either had to adapt or have a count-counter pick. Also one concern I have with just having pocket Aegis is that they are such a known factor for most players and they can get so destroyed if your opponent know how to exploit them and you don't know good counter tech.

Sparg0's Aegis isn't a pocket character, it was his main and is now his only secondary.

@@Smoothcarries But he only uses Aegis occasionally in specific matchups now. He's using Cloud like 80% of the time, so his Aegis is still a bit less fresh compared to Shuton, who uses them like 60% of the time.

Aegis is sooo exploitable offstage. I was trying to explain why going Aegis was a bad idea since Sonix has been grinding the MU and he is a master at edge-guarding, but it was too late. 😔. I think if Sparg0 mained Aegis and didn't use the girls as a pocket pick, It'd be way different. I don't think Aegis should be a pocket character. Like, every time she is one the players get beat badly when they whip her out. The reason why many Aegis players (and players in general) lose is because they don't warm up their characters prior to a big set. I know this from personal experience. Nearly made top 3 at a tournament but I decided to play Corrin because "winning MU" despite not warming him up prior and I got bodied.

Part of the problem is that, as Leo and Cosmos said, it's quite stressful to main Aegis due to their extremely exploitable recovery. I think Shuton's approach of more heavily co maining is kind of the best solution. His Aegis isn't rusty because he uses them a lot (if not more than olimar now), but he's got another character that's totally different in his pocket. If someone has his Aeigis down, they could get caught off by olimar or vice versa. Which is also part of like Leo's problem since all his characters are swordies who kind of do vaguely similar things, wanting to space with range and such.

@@TheEmperorGulcasa This is true. I think Leo's Joker is different enough to mix up opponents. He has to keep him, Byleth, and Corrin (for Sonic). Other than that, he shouldn't be touching anyone else for comp play. I don't know why he wants to stretch himself so thin and play so many characters at once.

Aegis' recovery is just too exploitable. Nobody really wants to play them at top level besides Shuton. They're kinda inconsistent, and everyone knows the matchup. Don't know why people think they're top 5 at this point.

@@RadzHexz while their kit is reallyyyy good, it's not extraordinarily broken. Aegis actually has to play fundies. They're not allowed to make many mistakes because of how exploitable they are offstage. They're similar to Wolf & Palu, just a better version of those characters.

I love watching Sonix matches broken down. I actually used to really not like watching Sonix but now I’m cheering hard for him because he genuinely impresses me on how much he can destroy my favorite players (rip mkleo 😅)

I personally dont trust Aegis. Too unreliable. It's a shame because on stage Mythra is the most dominant character. Actually, I think nobody should ever use a character with exploitable recovery against Sonix, he's too good and will 100% exploit it. Unfortunately, both of Spargo's characters have this massive flaw. If you're gonna have a secondary character, it should be something that covers for your worst matchups. Even Leo is feeling the sting now after letting his Joker get rusted to only play swordies.
