In my high-school English class, I loved receiving a blank piece of paper with a poem on it, and then filling up all the blank space with my notes, just like you've done here! Keep up the good work.

You reminded me of my IGCSE days. ❤️ This sonnet is highly defamiliarizing. Sonnet 145 is also defamiliarizing because of the iambic tetrameter. Sonnets are written using iambic pentameter lines.

But sir, if we compare the word choice of Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130, there is a huge difference the way he describe his two lovers in two different sonnet. So does Shkespeare actually try to mean that he loves his "Mistress" the way she is? Isn't Shapespeare play safe in Heroic couplet? Is there more deeper meaning to his word choice on the period of colonization?

Would mistress be his wife/partner or his side ???
@MrVR_JJ2 жыл бұрын
"mistress" in Shakespeare's time meant 'my darling' or 'my love', so it could refer to a girlfriend/wife/partner.

The mistress is a black woman. I cannot use the term that would have been used at that time as it would be seen as derogatory. Her eyes are dark, her skin is dark, her black hairs are like wires. Her breath reeks (from eating the food of her culture?). The sound of her voice is odd, unfamiliar. She is heavy footed (possibly without shoes unlike a dainty white foot in a pretty shoe). She is nothing like any other woman or lover. But heck, he clearly loves the bones off her. 💖

She is none of those but she is no less than anyone who is falsely described.
