Sonny Rollins brings me joy when he plays music. I saw a concert in the seventeens and it's the best jazz concert of my life.

Rollins developed a style that speaks to a stream of consciousness that is emblematic of the Harlem Renaissance- glib while parsing nuggets of golden thoughts describing the aspirations of a people that were denied its opportunity to fully realized its basic humanity; a stylist supreme whose mastery has rarely been matched; a tragic genius whose compulsive pursuit of excellence created a “wanderland” in search of a destiny of compatibility with geniuses of his ability and compaction ; a musician who on certain night defined what improvisation is in jazz terms; and a man whose improvisational accomplishments were touched by the hand of “Bird”. Creativity erupting at the most unlikely time with such force and beauty that those witnessing it have a life altering experience- they are given a glimpse of where no human has ever gone.

Al Foster is my favourite drummer-Max Roach on steroids. Saw him live: once with Sonny Rollins and once with Joe Henderson. Endless musical invention on a small kit.

His technique is so smooth and fluid here. I heard him during “Road Show” albums period where he’s become more raw and gravelly. I think arthritis must have contributed. Every note is brilliant. Pure genius from the Williamsburg Bridge.

The guitar is too loud & overplays and what's the point of having the guitar and piano play at the same time? Sonny is Sonny, I've never heard anyone I liked better. Al Foster could drive a train with his accompaniment and his solo playing; it's rare to hear a theme and variation drum solo. I preferred Bob Cranshaw when he played the bass but that's just my opinion.

Jerome Harris, who plays Electric Guitar, Electric Bass Guitar and Accoustic Bass Guitar is known as the loudest overplayer , naaa, actually he is known for being a Teamplayer extraordinaire, some Jazz Freaks hear a bit of Electric Guitar and their Judgment goes out of the Window. Jerome Harris plays great!

I just listened to a 10h European podcast radio show on Sonny Rollins (yes, 10x 1h, covering 1951-2001 !!!). My opinion of Rollins is that it seems very overrated to me. First of all as a player, he does not seem to me better than Johnny Griffin, Stitt, Roland Kirk, Phil Woods, Lateef ... but enjoys a much more important reputation ... and unjustified in my opinion. Ok he plays well, but not better than the musicians I mentioned. In terms of composition, he did not compose anything, everyone knows that St Thomas is a Caribbean folklore already recorded by Randy Weston in 1955 under the title Fire Down There. His other compositions from the 50s ... well, Oleo, Airegin etc ... this can in no way be compared to the compositions of Trane, Bird, Monk or Shorter ... also, his playing and his sound are terribly degraded after 1966 (36 years). It seems that he was traumatized by the arrival of Ornette, Trane, Ayler ... In the 60's he tried to be more free than Ayler, more calypso / blues than Ornette, and more mystical than Trane, but he didn't. did not succeed. Then in the 70s / 80s he tried to be funky, disco ... with really ridiculous and cheesy results ... Did he want to be funkier than James Brown himself? Also, in the radio show they say that he was paid current $ 300,000 for himself to record the Nucleus album (so listen to the result !!!!), and that, for his concerts, his financial claims were unrealistic, only the big festivals could afford it. He played with the Stones but didn't want to go on tour with them because, according to Jagger himself, he wanted too much money! I mean, I'm not making anything up here. In my opinion, he should have remained what he was before, a disciple of Bird at the Tenor, and quit at the age of 40 to leave a quality job, and without trying to follow fashion. Thank you for not insulting me because I have documented myself on Rollins and I like to have constructive discussions without being attacked on my person.

Idk man a musician wanting better pay for their work should never come under scrutiny especially since so many are underpaid for their services (ones that dedicate their live to the art form). Also a person deciding to leave their job (especially one as stressful as being a musician with the constant touring and playing at odd hours) to find peace and happiness I think is unfair to criticize. To your point about his musicianship, I can’t argue because it is subjective but I think it’s important to remember lots of people have taken inspiration, Joshua Redman, from him and that’s enough I feel to give him that respect. It seems like you’ve been shut down a lot in conversation about this and I’m sorry about that. Just remember there can be many greats! You don’t have to get why other than other people enjoy them and that’s enough when it comes to music! :)

@@jazzatnoonmke659 I am also not a stamp collector of any standing. But I have followed jazz and it's style periods and great soloists critically since I was 13; that is 65 years! For most of his career Sonny Rollins was one of the truly greats. This music was terrible. A shame and not understandable why he did this.
