The opening song here is 'Waiting Man'. It was always a blast to play'. I nicked the idea of laying out the Simmons Drums flat for two players facing each other from attending a performance of Steve Reich’s ‘Drumming’. Hope you don’t mind, Steve, but as you know, it’s not where you take it from, it’s where you take it to that counts. The groove after the breakdown is OK, but it really settles at around 6’50”.

Well, talking ab personal life as in this thread lol, in 1982 I was 15 and I remember we'd say, a partner of college and me, "we must like KC in the end. If we fail, we are real losers forever". We made a huge effort listening to several Lps at a time. Sometime we lost faith but by relistening over and over, we could happily say "we like KC!!!" 🤔😁

The Beato interview with Adrian, Tony, and Danny brought me here and all i can say is wow! I had heard the name before but never researched, and this is one of the best rock/jazz/progressive fusions i've ever heard! Oh wow! I bought tickets to a concert in the winter of 1969. King Crimson was the "warm up band". To this day, I cannot remember who the top-3:55 billed band that I actually paid to see even was! That's how's blown away I was of Crimson. Please listen to their LPs in order of release. In the Court of the Crimson King is a masterpiece. What an awesome band!

I went to a King Crimson concert at Perkins Palace in Pasadena, California during the Discipline Tour. I'd never heard any music by King Crimson, but I had seen the Discipline album jacket in the stores. Bill Bruford's name on a sticker on the cellophane wrapping made me buy a concert ticket. I didn't have any friends that were interested, so I went alone. I was majoring in classical guitar performance in college, already a veteran of local rock bands, intrigued by innovative, artistic music. King Crimson was astonishing, the perfect way to get acquainted. Most people want to know the songs before they go to a concert, but not me. The best way to experience music the first time is live. My seat was fairly close to the stage, and I was aghast that Bruford was playing a little bell instead of a hi-hat, and playing busy patterns on little tomtoms. I'd never experienced the Chapman stick before, and Adrian Belew's rhythms, noises and singing were a revelation. The sound and look of this band was beyond unique. I became a fan instantly. God Bless the Krim!

I believe I attended the same show in Pasadena in the early 80s. I was an old Crimson fan from the 21st Century Schidzoid Man days and the Discipline album was a new version of the band that I was very skeptical about. It was my first and only time seeing them live and I quickly entered into the adventure of sounds that was on that album. Thela Hun Jinjeet was like going on a jungle adventure and it was so exciting to be along for the ride. Adrian Belew proved himself to be qualified for the job and I left the show a true believer in the new line up. I'm so grateful to have had King Crimson as part of the soundtrack of my life! Fripp, Tony, Adrian and Bruford, a sound like no other!

Just remembered when my friend brought a copy of “Beat” to my dorm room. When I heard the Chapman Stick kicking into overdrive in “Neal and Jack and Me”, I jumped out of my seat because I recognized that it was the same instrument from Peter Gabriel’s track “I Don’t Remember”. When you left Yes after recording Close To The Edge, to join King Crimson, I thought you were mad. After hearing Larks’ Tongues in Aspic, I quickly changed my mind. No label can properly define these superior pieces of contemporary music. Nothing alike was being played in 81/83 neither came anywhere near to these geniuses' vision. This KC incarnation is simply NECESSARY to music: it fills a space that was created from nothing. The perfect 4 are creating a new world as if gods using a golem-like matter. I absolutely love this footage! I saw a similar show in March of 82 which King Crimson played in support of Discipline. I attended the March 1, 1982 show at the Fine Arts Center in Amherst, MA where I was attending the University of Massachusetts at the time. This footage re-awakened memories I didn't even know were still rolling around in my brain. I also remember the opening act, The Suburban Lawns, both because I actually liked them at them time and I thought it was one of the most unusual opening act pairings I'd seen. Oh gee, that also reminds me I was wearing an Adam and the Ants pin on my jacket and I noticed it was missing after the opening act. While milling around in the corridor with friends before the main show, I noticed some other dude wearing the same pin I had lost. I asked him about it and he went on telling me about how he got it at their show. Well, little did he know that I know that they had never played live in the area as I demanded the pin back and he obliged this "Waiting Man" in the most cowering and defeated way!

My first exposure to this iteration of KC was their appearance on ABC's FRIDAYS television program. They started off by doing "Elephant Talk" and I was blown away by how *nobody* on that stage was doing anything anyone would consider *normal*. We didn't always agree on everything, but we were both huge Bruford fans going back to the Yes days. Saw an earlier lineup (Fripp, Bruford, Wetton, Cross) at least twice. Couldn't choose between them on vinyl, but I think this lineup was better live.

@@pablodufranc absolutely, since i discovered this i've delved deeper into their discography and listened to in court of the crimson king, lark's tongues in aspic, red, discipline, beat, and the power to believe. have already bought the munich 82 club CD, and both red and discipline on vinyl, along with a 12" promo of heartbeat that has neal and jack and me and sartori in tangiers on it. lol i only clicked on this video to get tony levin off my screen because this video has been recommended to me for the better part of a year. glad i stayed and listened.

I'm in love with this particular performance of "Waiting Man"... I've seriously seen it hundreds of times. Those Simmons sounds are amazing for the tech of the day, and that end section with the overlapping vocal harmonies is just pure bliss to the ears. What a time to be alive. Thanks for giving us the rest of the set too!

To me, this was the freshest and most innovative KC line-up by far. The time was very interesting, with new wave coming in and Adrian Belew reinventing progressive songwriting with his Bowie influence. This was incredibly advanced music and artistic vision, especially in 1982. They brought together the minimalism of new wave and the complexity of prog in an amazing way.

I was fortunate to see them in the 90’s at ‘The Warehouse’ in Toronto. There was no seating so I could get 15 feet from the stage. Amazing performance.

I arrived in Germany in June of that year, stationed at a radar site with the US Air Force. Already was a long time King Crimson fan but discovered the album Beat there and Neil, Jack and Me meant a lot to me. That and Heartbeat were part of my courtship with my wife whom I met there and still am with today. :)

Gracias maestro Bill! The 1st time I saw live at frejus was in 1987. I was a 15yr old boy from Bogota, Colombia very influenced by my older brothers on prog rock since I was born. Walking in 19th avenue in downtoown there was a little music shop and I saw a VHS of that concert, which I decided to bought (of course I spent all the money I had which was given by parents to lunch that week). Prog rock in Colombia was the most uncommon thing by then, very few people knew about the existance of it). When I put on my VHS, I was shocked and almost nocked with the beginnig. Waiting man is for me the most spectacular start of a concert and til today, that concert is still my favorite of all times. The pure representation of Art Rock! Prog rock could be played by many bands, but non of them could reach the unique style, perfection and virtuosity of the most inspiring musicians of all time. KC my favorite band of all! Eventhough my favorite line up is wih John Wetton, this concert is way beyond everything a rock band could perform.

I happened to be at their very first gig in London. It was 1981 and I was 18. From Italy. I just could not believe when I saw: King Crimson in concert at the Venue. King what???? They splitted after RED. So what... I could'nt believe it...💓💓💓

Thanks for doing what you do Bill. Your work was part of what inspired me to over 30 years doing indie music. I met Adrian when I opened for him in Vancouver while he was playing with his buddy Rob and the Bears. He seemed like a really nice guy and we had a good time off stage when we weren't playing. He really was just as enthusiastic and lively off stage as he looks like on stage.
