This is a nifty little idea. A "smart" switch for USB powered devices. It works well (as expected) with the eWeLink app. Unfortunately, it isn't ESP8266/8285 based, so it won't run Tasmota. I tried the Home Assistant Custom Component for eWeLink devices, but didn't get it to work. There's probably a way to get it working with HA, I just don't know it.

nice timing Doc, I was just looking at these today, if they dont support HA its a big NOPE from the Fatty! Side note we can totally make our own smart usb charger using a sonoff SV and you can even patch the data lines across so the data would work
@ECEtek
@ECEtek 4 жыл бұрын
You can get the same effect (in a slightly larger footprint) by using an ESP01 and one of the Version 4 ESP01 relay boards. Plus you can then flash it with Tasmota. It will probably work out slightly more expensive once you factor in a USB lead extension (to get the male and female ends of the USB connections) and If you want to encapsulate the package it can get a tad more expensive. It is easy to add an external switch and a template already exists on the Tasmota site for the relay boards. You'd have to tweak the template slightly for a switch but it isn't too difficult. A bonus is that if you are smart in the length of USB extension cable you buy and the way you cut it you can maintain USB data pass through, which I believe is not available on these Sonoff mini device! I enjoy your videos - you've helped me a lot! Thanks.

They do have data passthrough, and you don't need to buy an actual cable, you can buy just the connectors which are very cheap, and solder the wires you need to it. The most expensive part is going to be the wifi microcontroller, as the sonoff micro is cheaper than most dev boards. If cost is the most important factor, this is a buy not a diy

I thought this would be neat before I started watching it, then about 20 seconds into the video I had the realization that I could get the exact same thing, but with HA compatibility, by simply plugging a phone charger into a smart switch and it would have virtually the same footprint. This just seems like another bad Sonoff product. If this product had been thought out just a little better it could have been useful and unique. None the less I finished watching the video, but only because I enjoy watching you :)

I paid about $6 for my Tuya compatible smart plugs, so it actually isnt cheaper, its just less compatible. Last time I gave my opinion of Sonoff products I caught too much crap from the community, so outside of what I already said I'll just keep my opinions of Sonoff to myself. If you like them, more power to you.

Sonoff/ewelink HA component needs a different username account as EWELINK will only allow A SINGLE use instance..so your phone instance is using it.. Try sharing from the phone to new account for just HA.

I've used the ewelink custom component ever since I started using home assistant. Then I started flashing things with esphome. I've flashed my last sonoff today, so now everything runs locally. I had to add a line under sonoff component when I started using it. It was something like 'debugging: true' I then had a debug switch get all ewelink stuff into home assistant. You can disable debugging after toggling the debug switch. The other lines may also be important for the component to work (that might have been the reason for the error) I personally didn't really like the component because not all switches will toggle when they are in a group.

Can be useful to control TV backlight connected to the TV’s USB. Sometimes these light are too bright and you don’t want them on with the TV. Maybe even combine it with a night mode IR command, where TV switches to a dimmed mode and the switch turns off the backlights.

I'm using a talentcell mini ups and have it connected to my Hubitat hub. Recently I have a rule set up when there is a power failure in my house that a battery backup z wave extender informs Hubitat its switched to battery and the hub then powers down. The problem was, if the Talentcell still had power the hub would not reboot after power was restored to the house. The hub had to be disconnected from the talentcell power and plugged back in. This Sonoff switch was my answer. I'm waiting for delivery but basically I want to plug it into the usb port of the Talentcell ups and the output end into the Hubitat hub. Now I should be able to turn off the ups power to the Hub, then turn it back on so the hub can reboot remotely. My only question is, with firmware updates, does the Sonoff automatically install new firmware which would cut off power to my hub OR do you manually initiate a firmware update from the app. Thank you again for your video

May be use as a Phone Charger which cuts off power when phone charges 90%. We can use Tasker to read Phone battery level and then trigger command to turn off this device. Will prevent over heating, over charging when plugged in over night

Charge to 80%, turn off, turn back on at 20%. That would require HA reading the tablet battery state though. Heard of doing this for HA displays mounted in-wall so the battery doesn't tank prematurely. Lot of tuya devices are getting new chips that can't be flashed w/ Tasmota or so I hear.

All my vehicles have mobile router WIFI and I had a problem of controlling the charging from my car battery, and also overcharging of the mobile router WIFI. I am going to connect the router through the Sonoff USB, and schedule recharging to the router to prevent damaging its battery. So, for me its usefull indeed

Wouldn;t it be more power efficient with a Smart Socket and a USB Power Supply? You still need a USB Power Supply for this anyway. Maybe if you run it off a USB Powerbank, but the standby current would drain that fairly quickly anyway.

Hi did you know then eWeLink account can works only on one device in one time. If you sign up in another device ( app) you will be automatically disconect from the first one. The solution is make secondary eWeLink account this put in Home Assistant, end in your main eWeLink account share your device with the secondary one.

Just rebooted my HA and the ewelink integration works again and so does my USB Smart Switch Adapter. It comes up with four switches (CH1-4) but only CH1 does anything (found in Developer States UI). I share my devices on my ewelink app login with a different login on HA, but still get a message on my phone when I switch the USB device on HA. Will have a play with Automations now. Using it to control a USB powered mosquito/fly killer in the kitchen. Don't despair DrZzs.

Turned out since I'm lazy and didn't share my devices with an account as it recommended, it was causing issues where my devices would appear as unavailable in Home Assistant. ESP01 can be quite power hungry and will empty a two cell AA pack in a day just sitting idle if you don't implement deep sleep etc. I appreciate that this isn't ESP8266 based but would imagine the power overhead is similar - probably caused by constantly checking back over the wireless link to maintain a connection with your router. Might be worth giving it a try and then letting everyone know how you get on. ;0)

No home assistant means it's a pass anyway. But no data passthrough is A HUGE oversight, i could think of a dozen uses. Sometimes my ambibox prevents my htpc from sleeping i could just power it off, or disable wireless dongles when I'm not gaming (some of them flash) restart troublesome USB devices without unplugging them, keeping my VR headset powered off when I'm not using it. Make flashing Arduinos easier. Argh! So close!

Running 0.104.3 Hassio. For the Sonoff custom component ... just spent a frustrating few hours going through this but well worth it and thanks to DrZzs for bring it to my attention and @peterbuga for the graft. I had lots of tries with the config but the keys are: 1) Place your telephone number in single apostrophes with no zero before the international code (so as you'd actually dial it) 2) region must the br same as your phone. Make a guess reboot and check the log and it's tell you what it wants if there's an error. sonoff: username: '+639993331111' password: Password! scan_interval: 60 grace_period: 600 api_region: 'as' entity_prefix: True debug: False I have 2 switches now in HA, a S26 and S31. The S31 is reporting current, power and voltage but not signal, energy_total, energy_today or energy_yesterday as my Tasmota S31 is.

I saw this reviewed on @UCdRpPAsQbIaVpn_vS2_omPw's channel a couple of weeks agoa and struggled to find a use case for it. External HDD's of USB2 type turn off with the PC. LED Lights - well most work better off a dedicated PSU and not a USB one. Phone charger. Well, you manually disconnect the phone anyway, so unplugging the charger is no big deal. It needs to run off a USB power supply anyway, so power saving isn't even a deal. Even with a Raspberry Pi this would make a bulky PSU. The footprint is the same as a smart socket with a 2.5amp phone charger that again can be controlled in Home Assistant directly. A smart socket will save more power as it would turn off the actual PSU. I really have no idea what to use this device for that existing phone charger devices can't already day with a smart socket that works in Home Assistant. Doc, this is a great review, no doubt, but I just struggle trying to find a reason for the device to exist.

This would be useful to extend the battery life of your phone. Since Li doesn't like to stay at 100% SOC. you could create a Tasker profile to watch the SOC while charging and when it gets to 80-90% send an API hit to turn off the micro. Charging Lithium to 80-90% can extend batteries drastically.
@DrZzs
@DrZzs 4 жыл бұрын
That's what I've heard. I assume they were thinking of things like that when they made it. I think a lot of newer phones have that kind of protection built it.
@injector221
@injector221 4 жыл бұрын
@@DrZzs it's not that. Li can be charged to 4.2v and still be perfectly safe. It's just the way the chemistry works if you don't charge it that high you'll extend the life. In other words by charging to 90% you can get upwards of 1k cycles more but that would mean leaving capacity on unused which for the usual user would be an issue. Not to mention the faster that battery dies the sooner you'll get a new phone. I've downloaded ampere on my phone and at 100% it sat at 4.3v per cell which is Def not safe. Not trying to put on a tin foil hat here, just nowadays companies are scammy
