Sonoff has released a new product, which is the Sonoff micro. It is a USB powered USB wifi switch. Ideal when you need to switch the USB side on your power supply and not the mains.
Purchase link: bit.ly/micro2a
Coupon code: SONODMGKCV10
It is valid before Mar. 31 and can be used to buy each or all of the the three products.

I didnt even know this Sonoff exist a few days ago until I had the need to switch on/off a USB power for my Christmas lights. I didnt think of using a S20 with a USB charger as the power strip I plug into already have a few USB power outlets.

very useful in holiday displays and remote places where you can use a solar panel and battery to power it. i use it with a usb powered router and this switch to use remote led lights. i never used the qr code to use them. the max voltage you want to switch is 2 amps. using it as a phone charger is not useful but it is for lower voltage situations.

Hello, we will connect it to this solar energy panel (the panel is 12v, there is a step-down device at its output to 5v, so it gives 5v) We set the timer and let it run at 09:00 in the morning. The sun rises at 07:30, so this device will detect the first moment of operation as 07:30. In this case, will the timer we set for 09:00 be activated at the right time, or does it start counting down after the device starts working? Or let's say the electricity went out and came back... Can it preserve the time in its memory?

While charging and USB lights can of course be controlled by a Sonoff Basic, I'd say that the needed cables wall->basic->plug->charger makes this quite messy. You could instead plug the charger into the wall, and have the Sonoff Micro on top of it. No messy cables. Of course, a IoT mains plug could also be used, bot these tend to be more expensive, and often somewhat bulky. It could also make sense on the go, like if a boat or camper does not have AC mains, but automation of lights (or whatever) is useful. Unfortunately the missing passthru of data lines limits more "creative" use cases, except to people willing to make a mess with splicing these leads around the switch.

I use a micro as a slave to open a gate. This gate has its own device, however with scenes I am able to allow a user to activate the gate only on certain days and between certain times. Outside of these times, the user can still activate the micro, but the scene won't run the gate. The other micro runs a usb fan when the temperature reaches a predefined temperature. Also through scenes and a Zigbee Temp/humidity device.

I was trying to work out use cases for this as well. Maybe led strips running off a battery pack. I guess it's a safe version given no mains wiring, but I think anything that connects to mains, as you said, is best switched off with a smart socket.
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 4 жыл бұрын
Yes probably. It is not really and energy saving device, as it will probably use similar amount of power than a Sonoff basic turned off. Maybe slightly less as it does not have a mains to low voltage power supply.

@@csongorvarga I guess, but most external HDDs turn off or have inbuilt power saving when idle or when the device they are connected to turns off. About the only case I can think of is maybe a sensor with dodgy firmware that needs rebooting once a week that gets power via USB.

12v WiFi hotspot in a car. Particularly one that doesn't turn on when power applied (Verizon 8800L) and doesn't like to have power continually to the battery (kills batteries). This device allows you to leave the device on 24/7 BUT not charge it 24/7 - this also precludes having to press a power-on switch when you need to use it (Verizon 8800L - Novatel). VERY common use-case for Wifi-based dash cams, hotspots, batteries, particularly when they are hard-wired and out of site of people looking for a reason to break in to your car.

Useful for ANYTHING in an auto since it's 12v. Even an inverter plugged into 12v that gives you 110v. My USB switch connects to my home wifi when I arrive home and automatically shuts down several devices that I don't need to be on when my car is safe in the garage. EXTREMELY useful for keeping things from draining the car's battery.

If it would support a USB attached disk drive you could set it to connect for scheduled backups and then disconnect when not needed. Having a backup device that is electrically isolated when not needed might be useful in these days of ransomware attacks. Can you confirm if a USB drive will work or not?

That is actually a good idea, unfortunately it does not work. I connected my USB mouse via Sonoff micro. When I turn the device on, the my mouse is not detected furthermore the red light at the bottom of the mouse is not even lit. Like if I connect my mouse to a USB charger. So only the power is switched, data lines are dead.

You could always route the data wires outside of this device. Just buy a USB extension cable and splice out the data wires from it, then connect the other end to the Sonoff, then the cable that goes to your hard drive, splice that to and reconnect the data wires. It's about 20-30 minutes of work.

Great video ! I'm using a talentcell mini ups and have it connected to my Hubitat hub. Recently I have a rule set up when there is a power failure in my house that a battery backup z wave extender informs Hubitat its switched to battery and the hub then powers down. The problem was, if the Talentcell still had power the hub would not reboot after power was restored to the house. The hub had to be disconnected from the talentcell power. This Sonoff switch was my answer. I'm waiting for delivery but basically I want to plug it into the usb port of the Talentcell ups and the output end into the Hubitat hub. Now I should be able to turn off the ups power to the Hub, then turn it back on so the hub can reboot remotely. My only question is, with firmware updates, does the Sonoff automatically install new firmware which would cut off power to my hub OR do you manually initiate a firmware update from the app. Thank you again for your video
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, this is an interesting use case. Sonoff does not download or install update automatically. You just get a notification in the app, and you need to start the firmware update manually.

@TheHellis 4 жыл бұрын
@MH Game not the sharpest tool I see... First of all, why would you need this if you have a wifi controlled LED strip? Second, not enough power? Are you living under a rock? A normal cable can handle 2.5A, Google home mini has a 1.8A power supply. That means there is enough power in a USB cable. Now on the other end we have Arduino very low power consumption and has WiFi.
@TheHellis
@TheHellis 4 жыл бұрын
@MH Game you really have no clue. It's not about the voltage, it's not about the mAh, it's not about the wattage. It depends on the LEDs used in the strip. And the power consumption is dependent on how many resistors, how many LEDs and how efficient the LED driver is. What you are saying is that a car with 300 horsepower is always faster than the one with 200.

I have a small project, going on where I have a Sonoff Bridge, which then turns on my light, in the hallway when the door opens, but the problem is just that, you can't make a scene, where I use sunrise and sunset in there. And my hallway is nicely lit, during the day, so I don't need any light. So my idea, is to use a Sonoff micro, to switch on when the sun goes down, and switch off again, when the sun rises, the only thing that happens at the thing, is that the bridge is without power, in the daytime, and it doesn't matter ... I don't have a Sonoff Micro just yet, I first ordered one today, so right now, I'm using a Sonoff Mini to run sunrise to sunset, and it works perfectly ..
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 4 жыл бұрын
To be honest, both solutions are OK. I don't see any difference turning off the entire power supply for the Bridge to using a micro. Of course you can't use any other RF devices during the day, but that is all. Nowadays, scenes have an "Effective Period". You cannot set it in between Sunrise and sunset, only a set hour and minute. But if you use that it will be close and you don't need to turn off the RF Bridge.
@phj-6749
@phj-6749 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter, as I said it is off all day, since I live on the 2nd floor, so I don't have to put other thing on it ... Yes I had it set for example, at 4:45 p.m. - 8:30 a.m. at the beginning, but then I have to edit on it every 2th week, or even weekly, for it to become almost synchronous with sunrise and sunset, I thought that would be too cumbersome .. But maybe not, that will be possible, to do so, in the upcoming version of the software ??
