In this video, I talk about how I get around Sonoma raceway, explain the corners on the track and what you're looking for on corner entry, mid-corner, and corner exit. I hope you learned something!

This is the best tutorial I've seen on that track. Appreciate the tips and feel much better about going to Sonona for my first time tomorrow. The only suggestion is making the track map live and showing which corner you're at in the map with a green line or something. Not sure how hard that is to do but I do love that. I can see how much time and effort you put into your tutorial already though. Thanks for helping us have great and safe track days! I'd love to see a Laguna Seca tutorial.

I was at Sonoma today as well! It was a great weekend with NASA Norcal, I hope you enjoyed your time at Sonoma and found this video beneficial to your progress. This was the first tutorial I had made, and I will certainly keep your comments in mind the next time I make a track tutorial video. I'll make a Laguna one next, stay tuned!

Thank you, very useful and detailed. One thing you can add is to highlight where you currently are in the track map.

It was in the carousel, in my very first motorcycle track day, that I discovered to nearly my misfortune that normal shifting (1 down, 5 up) is a really bad idea.

By far one of the better track guides for Sonoma. While I've driven Sonoma before, it's always helpful to get a good review with a great video track guide. Thanks for your work on it. I'm hitting Sonoma next month in my new (new to me) '99 mid-engine Boxster. Never driven a mid-engine before, and wondering if you have any suggestions on tracking at Sonoma in a mid-engine versus front engine car?

I am glad this video helps, thanks for your kind words! All of the principles explained in the video should apply to your vehicle as they do to most. What youre going to have to get used to more than anything is how the car responds to your inputs. Since its balanced so well, youre going to likely feel more rotation on deceleration in places like turn 4, turn 7, and turn 11 which can be beneficial. I would also try and stay balanced with your throttle in the high speed sections, turn 5, turn 8-8a, 9, and 10. If you find yourself lifting abruptly or holding your RPM's too high you could send the car into rotation at high speed, which isnt what you want. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions

Thanks man! I’ll certainly try my best but can’t guarantee anything. Michael and I have been coordinating trying to get best case scenario for the car and I’ll definitely send it to my full capabilities. Should be a great time!

I've never been to Sonoma, hoping to hit it in 2 weeks, wondering what your reservations are in a RWD car on the T7 complex? You prefer to hit that first apex, why/what kind of car would want to skip it? It looks like it may pinch the apex and I know how FWD cars LOVE to hunt for an apex under braking while, with a good diff, maintaining that corner exit speed until those front tires are absolutely nuked. FWIW your video structure is excellent, my only request is to dive deeper into the different lines you alluded to in the beginning but didn't follow through with in the end. I was hoping for some give and take there.

Awesome! Thank you for the input, as I develop more videos I'll keep that in mind and try to apply it! When doing the videos this way, it requires me to do it all in one take to keep the fluidity of the video footage. I could experiment with cutting the footage together to add in the different ways to take the corner, and I will have to keep it in mind while I'm out driving next to get examples. The kind of car I would skip the first apex in would be a high horsepower rwd car. By diving in the corner deeper and slowing down a little more, you can get a lot more mid corner rotation out of the car. That way you can apply the throttle earlier as well as keep the car more stable since you will have less steering input coming out of the corner, which is important when trying to get a lot of power down. I hope that makes sense!

Very useful explanation, I am probably never gonna drive there but still interesting points to take. However I find that in many cases you are more focused on the cars behavior and letting that dictate your line. Unless you have a perfect working setup

Thanks! I'm glad you found it useful. My aim was to explain the general principles and structure of the track, and what you're looking for out of the car in each corner

@@MilburnMotorsports yeah and you made it really practical by stopping the video and explaining first before the turn. I wish you could do that on tracks where I been driving on already 😬
@MilburnMotorsports
@MilburnMotorsports 3 жыл бұрын
@@BobiEd779 Yeah I thought pausing it would help, it took me a while to figure out what the best way to structure the videos would be. Simply playing the video and talking about it didnt give me nearly as much time to explain each corner in the detail that I wanted. Maybe I could do a track near you in the future! I definately want to get out onto more tracks eventually. I could do some videos from my sim racing setup but I dont know what kind of response those videos would get, and the feeling isnt as authentic as an IRL on track POV

@@MilburnMotorsports you nailed it with that video layout, very authentic as you said. There are so many track instruction videos around yt but most stuff isn't relatable. I think those kind of videos become even more relevant once you been driving the track and have some basic experience yourself and looking for further improvement. Unfortunately I don't think we will ever share a track, unless you come for a trip to europe. If so you're welcome to drive my track prepped civic

I wouldn't go for sim racing videos as a comparison to real world driving. Sim racing helped me on some tracks to get to know the basic layout of the track and to some point the correct line but I think there are too many differences to make reliable assumptions. Just my opinion on it
