This video describes how history is being made in the Colorado River Delta this month when the U.S. and Mexican governments release some 105,000 acre-feet of additional water into the river as part of the binational agreement known as Minute 319. The unprecedented "pulse flow" of water marks a major milestone in the longstanding efforts to bring life and water back into the depleted Delta.
The unprecedented surge of water begins on March 23, 2014 and will last for several weeks. The Institute is part of a binational team of scientific experts and government officials who will monitor the event and the extent to which it helps reestablish river health and habitat.
"The pulse flow is a vital part of our ongoing restoration efforts," says Francisco Zamora Arroyo, director of our Colorado River Delta Legacy Program. "We know that relatively small amounts of water can make a big difference in the health of the Delta region."

The Sonoran Institute's restoration work in the Delta was instrumental in spurring the Minute 319 agreement and the pulse flow event, by demonstrating the resiliency of the Delta's ecosystem and the potential for substantial regional environmental and economic benefits with a modest addition of water.
As part of Raise the River coalition, the Sonoran Institute and partners are working to raise $10 million to fund essential river corridor restoration work and to purchase permanent water rights for the Delta.

They need to do it again. Theres a reason drought has struck the west so hard the water cycles are disrupted.

Permaculture. It's gonna change the planet for the better. If people learn about it there will be no more desert dry lands or starving world. Imagine how much water all the dry land can fully absorb on our planet. The oceans will not rise but recede

there is another way. Smaller pulse flows all the time with periodic bigger floods instead of just this 5 year thing. We should be diverting small amounts all the time when we can instead of always putting time frames on things

I have no jealousy for the water needs of the Southwest. But I'm willing to share what we have in Michigan.
