So the Sonos Roam is here just in time for summer 2021… but like I mentioned in the full review with the Sonos roam you’re paying a premium cause of its smarts and not so much for its sound. Now like I said in the full review if you’re looking for a Bluetooth speaker and you’ve got a budget between $150 and $200 then I highly recommend that you just get the JBL Charge 5. With the Charge 5 you’re going to get much better sound and a much better battery life. But if you’re specifically looking for a small speaker like the Roam… then today we’re going to directly compere it to both the JBL Flip 5 and Sony XB23.

Hey can you measure the difference of the boombox 2 before and after updating to v 0.4.4. I and a few other people seem to think there is a sound improvement with the update. I am also curious if it pushes out more DBs now.

My pick is the Sony XB23 due to the better instrument separation, wider soundstage and an overall balance sound. The JBL Flip 5 is better for outdoor listening as it sounds louder and has a boomier bass.

In the comparison between Flip 5, XB23 and Emberton, you said XB23 is the loudest...here you are saying that Flip 5 is louder than XB23. And its quite apparent that the Flip 5 has more emphasis on base than the XB23...but you are saying the opposite. I really like your videos...but now I'm having some deep concerns on whether to trust your reviews. Please address the issues.

@@frozengamer3030 you will be disappointed unless your music don’t contain bass. You could have two JBL’s flip 5. You could have bought an Marshall Emberton, for something bigger you could have two Anker Soundcore Motion+ there are a lot of speakers out there which are better Soundwise, like the Tribit Maxsound Plus and you could have saved yourself a lot of money while also having a small speaker. You should watch Oluv or Alan Ross reviews also and you will see, the Roam soundwise has great highs and lot of mids but the bass is off and kind of muffled. I heard it in the shop and I was really glad I had some other options :-)

No it does not. It plays deeper bass but worsen the mids and highs quality overall.

I still arent sure that the roam is waterproof even though it says it is but the main driver makes pressure in so the air needs to be released thats why waterproof speackers have pr passive radiators but sonos doesnt have so that will cause loss of bass since the driver cant push in so will it force the air? Or will not have that much bass i wonder why they did that for now i think its just ip65 or ip64 thers no way the air can be released how????

Wish JBL didn’t take away the speakerphone (and voice assistant) on the FLIP5 (I think they did it because of some software issues, many earlier FLIP5’s manufactured in 2019 have enclosures that show evidence a mic was supposed to be there, and some have mics)- it would really give Sonos a run for their money.

Sorry......but almost everything about the Sonos is a deal breaker for me. The SONY and JBL both seem far better overall. And "wireless charging" (which isn't actually wireless as it still requires connection to something with a wire) is just a gimmick, so it's hardly an advantage. Plus at the end of the day both the SONY and the JBL just sound better in terms of actual sound quality/sound signature.

Wireless charging is not a gimmick, it means you have a wireless charging base and can put your phone/tablet and now this speaker on it to charge, and don't have to plug anything into the device. You can just throw the speaker on the base you already have for your phone. And SONOS supports wifi audio streaming which, audio quality-wise, puts it above bluetooth by being able to stream higher quality. So both points of your argument make zero sense.

I don know.. I feel like... the Roam and the Flip 5 are two really different speakers I wouldn't say one is significantly better than the other but I would personally go with the Roam I think. As for the flip 5 vs the Roam ( not mentioning the Sony XB23 because I think it's really not that good) even though the Flip 5 as more bass it also seems to fall flat at high volume just like the Sonos Roam (over 80% volume). That being said, i feel like the Roam offer a sound that is a lot more full around 80% volume were we have reasonable bass and crisp mids and highs while the JBL speakers have ok mids and highs and try to make up for it with more bass which i found is something we can often see in lower quality headphones and speakers ( not saying this is necessarily the case here). Also i feel like the JBL flip 5, at lower volume, is drowning the mids and highs in bass were the Sonos have a more balanced sound. that being said, at the end of the day i feel like both brands try to reach very different customers. JBL speakers, to me, would be more attractive for younger people, since their product are pretty affordable, or the bass heads since their speakers often include passives radiators which are providing them with a lot a bass. As for the Sonos speakers i think they would attract older people (since price $$) that are looking for good and balanced sound. That's my opinion.

As the sonos sounded the worst as the xb23 sounded the most balanced and keeps the bass punch as the flip 5 is going for a more boomy sound signature as the sonos is trying to sound balanced as the sony as they failed to do so as it isn’t even close to the loudness as the flip 5 and xb23 and I personally have the xb23 and it sounds good and outdoors it also sounds good and it is extended durable as it passed my durability test of drowning it in mud and throwing it in the dirt and barry it in the dirt and useing the jet mode on my hose and it is very durable.

The sonos sounds tinny and very small compared to the JBL. I'm not a bass head or anything but I much prefer the flip 5 to the sonos sound and at half the price its a no brainer for me. Hell I'd even take the tribit MaxSound over the sonos.
