I intend respect for all yet, without the emotion the beautiful young songstress lends to the song, I am smitten. True love is not to be sneezed at. While serving my country 't with the USN, the older guys would laugh and say, "Hey kid, don't go to town and, fall in love"! but, I did! SOFIA IS VERY BEAUTIFUL.~ I am now 65 years old and, happy. Peace be with you. ~ Joe (American patriot).

Great song. The song reflects the language once spoken before the destruction of the Sich by Catherine. Perfect, clear Ukrainian language. There are many such songs from Kuban. Of course, many old maps, including those from the czarist era, show Kuban as part of Ukraine. Great stuff.

I am of Ukrainian background and this song is being sung in Ukrainian. But I could not agree with you more about the time wasted here spreading hatred instead of appreciating the beautiful performance that is worthy of all praise and honour. Maryna Krapustyna sings this song with such feeling and emotion that I recommend everyone listen to her angelic voice that will leave you absolutely speechless and in total awe. May her Memory be Eternal.

@banduryst Do you know that the very word Ukraine was unknown until the 20th century, as the territory was known as the "Small Russia" meaning Central Russia as opposed to the Great Russia territory, which is now the Russian Federation? And the language you talk about was known as southern dialect of Russian? :)
@matejsrubar84206 жыл бұрын
You can say this also about german language... it is just some norwegian dialect. Or finish language is just a dialect of hungarian one.. etc. I am not a historian, but I took a quick look upon wikipedia and looks like the name is much more older than you state: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_of_Ukraine

Do you know that russia was unknown until the reign of Peter, Kyivan Rus was the progenitor of the modern representatives that are the Mari people, the Erzya and the Moksha Mordvins, russia did not exist until the 18th century. They spoke a Finnic and Uralic language. They assimilated the Slavic language and it became an amalgam of Slavonic and Uralic language, russians are not Slavic peoples.

This song is actually sung in Ukrainian. 99% of their repertoire is in Ukrainian. After Zaporizhian Sich fortress was destroyed by Catherine the Great in 1775, the Zaporizhian Kozaks dispersed with most going to Kuban, some to Moldova. The Kuban Kozak Choir was first formed in 1803 and the songs they sing today are so authentic to that period - compared to other choirs that sing 20th century arrangements of these historical songs (eg Bayda, Morozenko, etc.)

Zaporozhian Cossacks understood themselves as Russians. There was no "Ukraine", there were no "Ukrainians" at that time.

Oh dove- oh dear dove, oh my dear grey dove, Do tell me dear dove, where is my beloved? Oh your beloved's, beyond the river Bowed his head down, stands with another. And when the maiden had heard about this, Laid upon the ground there, to sleep forever. Oh, runs her beloved across the bridge there, Covered his beloved with a white blanket. "Arise beloved, enough of sleeping, As we did play so, we'll still go out dear!" "I won't arise dear, go with another. My heart's now buried beneath the ground here."

Actually you are incorrect. The term Ukraina is a variation of Vkraina which means "Our Land" began to be used in the 1800s. Originally the lands of Ukraine were Rus and modern Russia was Muscovy. Tsar Peter the Great changed Muscovy to Rosia and co-opted Rus' older history - thus beginning the Russification of all subjucated lands under the Russian empire. This doesn't change the fact that they (Kuban KC) are singing in Ukrainian - which is a language in itself, not a dialect of Russian.

Wow! Ukrainian is a dialect of Russian? I would call you Igor Stalin, but I'm afraid that you might take that as a compliment. Ukrainian and Russian culture, music and language are both fantastic, but they are not one and the same, and certainly one is not a "southern version" as the other is not a "nothern version". Ukraine, Ukrainians and the Ukrainian language are real. Get over it,
