@@panoskonomi2875 Depends on your needs. I prefer the 135 GM myself (even in crop mode), but if you need the versatility, you will need the 70-200. I would wait until the 70-200 GM Mark II comes out though. Not sure when that will happen though. I wish Sony made a lens like Canon's 200 f2. That lens is badass.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Very nice - as great as the Sony is - the Zeiss highlight rolloff on the skintones seems more pleasing in the portrait comparison + also seems to dim the OOF Background area more - which appears to isolate the subject just that little bit more... would be interested in seeing any other comparison portraits with different backdrops + lighting! - Great stuff as always Dustin !

Another great review! I was recently faced with a sale of $300 off list on this lens. I needed a quick review before I left for appointments and errands. There were only 4 of 49 left in stock, and I didn't want to miss out. Once Dustin said it was the best of 5 GMs he's tested, I bought it confidently at $1800 USD. With taxes, it was still under 2 grand. His reviews are always a factor in my decision-making on hardware since a spec sheet can only provide a limited amount of information. Cheers!

@@DustinAbbottTWI watched a few more of your reviews. Great job!! Looking at the 24mm GM next. I'd like to shoot some video. I know a 16-32 or 70-200 would be great lenses, more versatile and probably a better choice for someone with a budget for only a couple lenses but fast primes make me far more excited to shoot! If I were shooting real estate or weddings I'd buy those two zooms but I'm not so adding only special lenses to my currently small collection. Thanks again for great content! I own the 135 GM, astonishing are the pics that I get from this lens. DA does point out the difficulty of the lens, to get a full-body shot, the distance is far, 30 feet. But the image of that subject will be the best they will ever have. You will have to pay good money to get this kit,; I have never regretted paying it to get the images I achieve every time I use it.

I first found your channel, when you did the Zeiss Batis 135mm review. That lens is very very amazing. Am actually feeling very hyperbolic about it. Best lens that I’ve had. It’s a shame it never got more appreciated. I’ve now sold all my Batis lenses. And got some practical zoom lenses. But there are two primes I had to get. I bought the 50mm Sony Zeiss F 1,4 that lens is already become my new favorite. I can live with the AF. It’s fair on the A7RIV... Now the 135mm Sony F1,8 is bought, just waiting for the mailman... Am really looking forward for this one ☝🏼 Thank you Dustin, you are the only one on KZbin, that I really appreciate for lens reviews. Yours are the best

Ok so this lens is impressive for sure and it does seem to have surpassed the Milvus/Sonnar 135 in terms of sharpness. But I have to say that my love for Zeiss Otus and Milvus lenses goes beyond the ability to resolve, to me what makes them special is their unique spatial rendering and making images pop to the point where they are almost absolutely “transparent” and make you feel as though you are inside the image with the subject. This is something I haven’t seen with even the best Sigma Art lenses. Until a lens can give that Zeiss 3D pop and amazing sharpness in one package I will stick with my Otus. Sure, I don’t have autofocus but with the Canon focus guide it’s a breeze to use, almost like driving a smooth manual transmission car. It just reintroduces the photographer’s input back into the equation. I watched a KZbin video from someone called Straight Out Of The Camera and he explained that the Zeiss 3D was not a result of high micro contrast but of their inherent lens design. As they say there is more to a lens than sharpness, maybe Zeiss sprinkles a bit of magic dust that we don’t know of...
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 4 жыл бұрын
Hard to argue with that. I too love Zeiss rendering.
@simonc4764
@simonc4764 4 жыл бұрын
Some filmmakers call cine lens that gives spatial depths "air". I did a test with focus peaking and notice the peaking intensity on Zeiss lens appears more gradual while a typical Canon EF lens there is hardly any, so its very sharp in focus and then not so sharp off focus with little in between.

I was a bit ‘worried’ after watching your 135 Milvus review. I was wondering whether you have tried the GM. Now I watched this review and completely agree with everything said. It sure finds a place in my personal ‘holy trinity’ of best Sony lenses - 24GM, Zeiss 55 1.8, 135GM.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Stefan, I'm with you on everything but the 55mm F1.8, which I personally find only average. After my direct comparison series, I purchased the Planar 50mm F1.4, which I think is more like the GM series.
@stefantotev
@stefantotev 4 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI I hadn't watched your reviews of the 50s, so I went ahead and did :) Let's agree to disagree. I don't really think you say anything that bad about the 55 apart from some chromatic aberrations and worse bokeh (which is totally subjective). My opinion is that the 55 is the best overall lens for the entire system considering image quality, autofocus, size, build and price. I bought mine 4 years ago for 680$. The AF is super fast and silent, sharpness is one of the best in the system, colours and bokeh for me personally are totally fine (I always do some colour correction either way). Considering everything mentioned so far, the size of the lens make me adore it even more and probably this is the only lens I will never sell as long as I shoot Sony. Funny thing is that when I take photos with it and look at the back of the display, photos look so-so. When I import them and see them on the big 27" retina screen every single time I am amazed by the photos this little lens produces. The only thing I miss in it is an AF/MF switch. But for this thing only I will never get a much larger, heavier and more expensive lens (such as the Planar 50 1.4). I used to have the Sigma 50 1.4 Art and used it adapted for awhile on my a7r II, but then decided to switch it with the 55 Zeiss. What I'm looking forward, however, is a 50mm GM f1.2. If Sony are able to make it compact and not so heavy (similar to the way they've built the 24GM), it will be a very interesting lens.

I have almost the same set: 135gm + a7r4, and 24gm + a6600. For the “in-between” I’ve gone from the 55z to an 85 Batis which I’ve also sold. Now trying to decide which one of the two I’m gonna buy again (love the Batis rendering but 55z makes a little bit more sense).

I'm sitting here watching your excellent reviews trying to decide whether or not I want the versatility of a 70-200 (or the Tamron 70-180) or if I want the stone cold performance of the 135mm. I've always preferred primes, but you make an excellent point regarding the wedding and being a little cramped with the 135mm. I currently own the A-Mount 135mm STF lens, and while I absolutely adore the images it can capture even as a relatively experienced manual focuser, I cant deny that I would love to "upgrade" to a AF lens. Ugh, decisions decisions.

:) As allways I prefer the written review ;) I have had the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM for about one and a half year now, it is a brilliant lens, superp quality, I love it for landscape, close-up, portrait, arcitecture, street and allround photography, recently I used aa a close-up lens both at fullformat and in APSC mode on my Sony A7RIV, the pictures turned out very well, so it is good for nature close-up photography as well :) Happy New Year and gear ;) Before the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, I had the Canon EF 135mm 2.0 L which is a very good lens, but the Sony are much better and that tells a lot ! The only thing I want are a 1.4X teleconverter for the Sony, I had a 1.4X for the Canon and I loved that combination, which I used many times. My kit of lenses are Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8, Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, Sony 200-600mm 5.6-6.3 G and a lot of "classic" anaolog manually focusing lenses from Canon FDn, Leica R and Tamron.

Dustin, I think the Sony GM 135 & 24 have set the mark for pro-grade Sony FE lenses. Could I suggest you do a "lookback" summary review of them and list the areas that need fixed for a 'Gen2'? Lookback/upgrade reviews are often done in cars, firearms and TV's when products meet logical/generational updates and would be really fitting with so many Sony models finally released, especially for those out for 3-4 years.

Expectations should be adjusted upwards on Gen2 units considering pressure from Sigma and Tamron. My thought is a summary of major/minor improvements for these units would be informative from a person like you.

I wish Sony had an 85mm lens which is that good. I got to test the Sony 85mm F1.8 and the Samyang 85 F1.4 over the last couple of days and I can purchase them for the same price but I'm not really pleased with the AF performance of the Samyang, especially in videos and continuous eye-af, but I also can't really justify going with an 1.8 with more noise. On top of that I already got the Sony 70-200 f4 which I found to be extremely sharp, but I need something with a wider aperture for low light which I shoot in a lot. So the 135 F1.8 GM looks really tempting, but like you said it probably can't fully replace a 70-200 because there will be cases where it will be too close. I guess I should wait for an improved 85mm 1.4 GM.

21:42 - while the GM 135 is sharper and a fantastic lens - it seems to lack the highlight & colour control the Zeiss has which you can see in the skintones / highlights, combined with slightly smoother bokeh & a touch better CA performance - it seems the 135 APO Milvus still has a place for particular shoots + certain users that don't demand AF & value high quality rendering. "My only real argument for the Milvus over the 135GM is that I think that when viewed globally the Zeiss color is a little bit richer and the defocused region is arguably a little more pleasing." ^^ from Dustin's full review - Well said Dustin - both fantastic lenses & nice to have choices :) ps what EF-E adaptor where you using? sometimes the rear element planarity with sensor can be off by sub mm's that affect corner performance.

As I have never used a 135mm 1.8, I was wondering if you would recommend this lens over the 85 1.4 for the "3D pop", i.e., background separation, in spite of the smaller aperture (albeit admittedly longer focal length)? Also, based on your sample images, the bokeh of the 135 GM seemed a little more "nervous" compared to the 85 GM which, to my eyes, seems to give a slightly more buttery and "dreamy" look.
