I was a bit ‘worried’ after watching your 135 Milvus review. I was wondering whether you have tried the GM. Now I watched this review and completely agree with everything said. It sure finds a place in my personal ‘holy trinity’ of best Sony lenses - 24GM, Zeiss 55 1.8, 135GM.
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
Hi Stefan, I'm with you on everything but the 55mm F1.8, which I personally find only average. After my direct comparison series, I purchased the Planar 50mm F1.4, which I think is more like the GM series.
@stefantotev4 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI I hadn't watched your reviews of the 50s, so I went ahead and did :) Let's agree to disagree. I don't really think you say anything that bad about the 55 apart from some chromatic aberrations and worse bokeh (which is totally subjective). My opinion is that the 55 is the best overall lens for the entire system considering image quality, autofocus, size, build and price. I bought mine 4 years ago for 680$. The AF is super fast and silent, sharpness is one of the best in the system, colours and bokeh for me personally are totally fine (I always do some colour correction either way). Considering everything mentioned so far, the size of the lens make me adore it even more and probably this is the only lens I will never sell as long as I shoot Sony. Funny thing is that when I take photos with it and look at the back of the display, photos look so-so. When I import them and see them on the big 27" retina screen every single time I am amazed by the photos this little lens produces. The only thing I miss in it is an AF/MF switch. But for this thing only I will never get a much larger, heavier and more expensive lens (such as the Planar 50 1.4). I used to have the Sigma 50 1.4 Art and used it adapted for awhile on my a7r II, but then decided to switch it with the 55 Zeiss. What I'm looking forward, however, is a 50mm GM f1.2. If Sony are able to make it compact and not so heavy (similar to the way they've built the 24GM), it will be a very interesting lens.

At 21:08, the comparison with the Sonnar seems to show much better color rendition for the Zeiss lens. Skin colors are too orange-ish on the Sony shot (21:20). Did you use the exact same white balance in the comparison ?
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
Using the exact same white balance would be a mistake, as the glass is different. Using the same metering with white priority (which I did) is the better way to handle it.
@dans.81983 жыл бұрын

Ok so this lens is impressive for sure and it does seem to have surpassed the Milvus/Sonnar 135 in terms of sharpness. But I have to say that my love for Zeiss Otus and Milvus lenses goes beyond the ability to resolve, to me what makes them special is their unique spatial rendering and making images pop to the point where they are almost absolutely “transparent” and make you feel as though you are inside the image with the subject. This is something I haven’t seen with even the best Sigma Art lenses. Until a lens can give that Zeiss 3D pop and amazing sharpness in one package I will stick with my Otus. Sure, I don’t have autofocus but with the Canon focus guide it’s a breeze to use, almost like driving a smooth manual transmission car. It just reintroduces the photographer’s input back into the equation. I watched a KZbin video from someone called Straight Out Of The Camera and he explained that the Zeiss 3D was not a result of high micro contrast but of their inherent lens design. As they say there is more to a lens than sharpness, maybe Zeiss sprinkles a bit of magic dust that we don’t know of...
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
Hard to argue with that. I too love Zeiss rendering.
@simonc47644 жыл бұрын
Some filmmakers call cine lens that gives spatial depths "air". I did a test with focus peaking and notice the peaking intensity on Zeiss lens appears more gradual while a typical Canon EF lens there is hardly any, so its very sharp in focus and then not so sharp off focus with little in between.

21:42 - while the GM 135 is sharper and a fantastic lens - it seems to lack the highlight & colour control the Zeiss has which you can see in the skintones / highlights, combined with slightly smoother bokeh & a touch better CA performance - it seems the 135 APO Milvus still has a place for particular shoots + certain users that don't demand AF & value high quality rendering. "My only real argument for the Milvus over the 135GM is that I think that when viewed globally the Zeiss color is a little bit richer and the defocused region is arguably a little more pleasing." ^^ from Dustin's full review - Well said Dustin - both fantastic lenses & nice to have choices :) ps what EF-E adaptor where you using? sometimes the rear element planarity with sensor can be off by sub mm's that affect corner performance.

Very much enjoyed the definitive review of the 135mm GM. I "settled" on a Batis 135mm because of weight for my travel kit and I'm very happy with how it renders and a bit surprised with how much I like the focal length. Looking forward to the Tamron 70-180mm reviews. 👍

What you are probably hearing is a "floating element" that allows for better performance at close distances. People often get freaked out about lenses like this, as they fear that something is broken in their lens. I think your lens is fine, but should it get louder, then certainly have Sony check it out.

Hi Dusting, thanks for that review. I am new to the Sony world so your reviews are such a great help. Makes me thinking of getting this lens. The eye sharpness at 20:45, could you achieve that with AF-C or AF-S? I suspect AF-C, because on AF-S, the slightest move front/back of model or photographer and you’re out of focus at 1.8. Did you use the 7M3 or 7RM3 for that portrait?

I used R3 for the portrait, and I use AF-C in those situations as it will adjust for any subject movement.

Great review Dustin! Sold all my previous gear from Canon, Nikon and Olympus and built enough of a budget and now I’m trying to build my Sony setup. Theres 5 lenses I wanted to own namely the 24GM 85GM 135GM 90 2.8 macro and 50 1.4 Z. I Can’t afford all of them all at once. Out of these 5 lenses, which would be the first 3 I should get that offers good balance? Perhaps the 24GM 85GM 135GM? Or 24GM 90 2.8 macro 135GM? Or 24GM 50 1.4 Z 85GM? hard to pick. Please help me decide :) Thanks Dustin

I wish Sony had an 85mm lens which is that good. I got to test the Sony 85mm F1.8 and the Samyang 85 F1.4 over the last couple of days and I can purchase them for the same price but I'm not really pleased with the AF performance of the Samyang, especially in videos and continuous eye-af, but I also can't really justify going with an 1.8 with more noise. On top of that I already got the Sony 70-200 f4 which I found to be extremely sharp, but I need something with a wider aperture for low light which I shoot in a lot. So the 135 F1.8 GM looks really tempting, but like you said it probably can't fully replace a 70-200 because there will be cases where it will be too close. I guess I should wait for an improved 85mm 1.4 GM.

This lens is beautiful and uncompromising in its optical quality - but it really reminds me why I wish that Samyang had made an autofocus version of their 135mm f2. It's not as bright (and likely not quite as sharp), but I really loved the rendering of that lens while I owned it (and it remains a genuine bargain for what it delivers optically)

135 is a favorite focal length of mine ever since I got my canon 135L few years ago and I was desperately waiting for Sony to announce one. I’ve had the Batis 135 before I got the GM and I have to agree there’s always something special in the way Zeiss renders colors and micro contrast. The GM is heavier, but not that much. Dustin Abbott I heard that the new Panasonic 50/1.4 and Sigma40/1.4 are also better than the Otus55. But I also heard that there’s a possibility that these lenses are getting some “image processing” even before raw. But nonetheless these lenses perform on extreme levels, so with the exception of AF it probably doesn’t matter much, if one lens is better than the other.

Hi Dustin; excellent review as per usual! My current go to lens for outdoor portraiture is the 85mm 1.4 GM lens. As I have never used a 135mm 1.8, I was wondering if you would recommend this lens over the 85 1.4 for the "3D pop", i.e., background separation, in spite of the smaller aperture (albeit admittedly longer focal length)? Also, based on your sample images, the bokeh of the 135 GM seemed a little more "nervous" compared to the 85 GM which, to my eyes, seems to give a slightly more buttery and "dreamy" look. I don't know if you would agree?
