I have this lens and use it primarily for bird photography. A couple of suggestions: 1) try a black rapid sport breathe strap. Very comfortable to wear and means the camera is ready to rotate up when you see something interesting. 2) I was having a problem shooting stationary birds and then switching quickly to birds in flight. So, I set up for stationary birds normally I.e slower shutter speed, aperture of choice, auto ISO, expanded spot focusing. Then I assigned the button on the lens, which is near my left thumb when holding the lens, to my bird in flight settings (I.e faster shutter speed, aperture of choice, autoISO, wide focusing mode). When I want to change to BIF mode, I just press and hold the lens button and it changes quickly. Releasing the button then reverts back to stationary bird mode. Hope that’s useful.

I have the Sony 200-600 and it fits in the Lowepro ProTactic 450 AW camera bag. If you change the internal padding to have no divider across the bag it fits with the body (A7RIV in my case) attached and hood reversed. Well worth the money, it's a fantastic bag all round.

Regarding the weight, there are few lenses up to 600 mm lighter than the 200-600. I actually have a Sigma 150-600 Sport which weights 745 gr more than the Sony. So, first, you should go for a replacement foot (like the wimberley ap-620), it is way better than the adapter. Second, consider using monopod, it actually helps. And last, in time and with practice, you should be able to get the most of the lens, even when at the beginning feels so heavy. Ive traveled the world with my Sigma monster and I feel it is part of me now.
@CattailChronicles2 жыл бұрын
Im more used to it now, unless I don't use it for a couple weeks. I am considering a different foot thanks for the suggestion. I've been on a few portrait shoots without this lens lately and wish I had it for random wildlife that show up!

Good tips.. For me the lens isn’t to bad to carry and is balanced well. 1 thing you can do to save space is to take the hod off turn it round and put it back on to the camera so it fits over the lens.. it fits in my bag perfect and saves space!👍🏻👍🏻

@@CattailChronicles I see David beat me to it. Yes, always put a second screw on that plate to keep it from turning. In my Nikon lens, I had to drill another hole and put a 1/4X20 insert for the second screw.

@@JeffandLeslie Oh, you drilled a second hole. Good idea. It always comes loose on the 70-200 also. Thanks!
@JeffandLeslie3 жыл бұрын
@@CattailChronicles yes, I installed a 1/4X20 rivet nut. I had the tools to do it but anyone with a drill press or who is good with a and drill can do it. Don't try to thread the foot itself. The cast aluminum won't hold but drill the appropriate size hole for the rivet nut (I think 5/16 if memory serves me correctly), mix up a little epoxy and glue the nut into the foot. Let the epoxy set and there you have it, A second attachment point for your arca plate. Works like a charm.
@ohata03 жыл бұрын
another option is to replace the foot itself w/ an arca swiss compatible foot. i was contemplating getting the wimberley, but ended up getting the kirk. works great and i don't have to worry about it twisting. more expensive than just adding a plate to the bottom of the foot, but i also don't have to worry about making sure any screws aren't loose

As an owner of 200-600 I can claim it is heavy.. REALLY.. but not right after holding it, but like it takes one minute of trying to focus on the bird by viewfinder and the arms are gased out for a few minutes at least. I wanna ask, what parameters you keep in Menu system and on the lens for the best auto-focus? I feel like my 200-600 is front focusing a little bit, the eyes have problems to be in focus of the birds... Even if autofocus claim it has green box around the eye, 60% chance is it's out of focus, really. It's close to the eye, like beak, chin, or body under the eye but not the eye though so I need to shoot many many photos to believe 1-3 of 10 are at least in focus... I also wear Marumi filter on the lens, but maybe I should take this off, I don't know what can cause the problem, and if there is any calibration method?
@CattailChronicles8 ай бұрын
You can for sure calibrate. I would experiment without the filter. And use the focus distance switch on the lens to your environment. Choose a high enough shutter speed for the birds movement. We use bird eye af setting. Also watch for atmospheric distortion. Also lots of practice :)
@pentagramyt4178 ай бұрын
@@CattailChronicles I took off the filter, set 1/800 for base speed, and it started working much better :) Even at f6.3 the image becomes sharp (the rule is: object must take at least 1/3 size of the frame, other than that - it's soft image) Recommend anyone using f8.0 for best contrast - when possible, EVEN AT ISO 6.400 / 12.800 (!) - if that was shot on full-frame sensor.

nice video. touches on points not often covered. shoot the 200-600 with 2x on the a1. both hand held and tripod. results are pretty much insane with a little practice. with extreme distances, you get some atmospherics. some desirable, most not. so as not to do many in field lens swaps, keep the 100-400 on the a7r4 or a9. rest of the glass is carried in a bag.

When you order the lens also order a lenscoat because white scares off wildlife, also wear camo clothing. Buy also a heavy duty binocular harness and attach to the lens using cords on the lens but keep foot free for tripod use. Nice to know you can use the 2x teleconverter going to f/11 but works out to f/16+ and AF works just tracking suffers a bit whereas Canon/Nikon AF does not work combined lens and teleconverter above f/8. There is also a Olympus EE-1 Dot Sight like on a rifle BUT you adjust at center point of lens aim works great with 1.4x and 2x (used for hand holding hummingbirds) just reset aim for each, it is fast, both eyes are open so you can see all around. As far as getting a bird use at 200 then twist a little to get 600. Great also for moon capture 600mm + 2x teleconverter = 1200mm but in APS-C mode 1800mm (cropped on sensor) will fill frame and super super sharp hand holding. To plan the next Lunar Eclipse use the MSM (move shoot move) tracker on your tripod for a great full night 6 to 8 hours (if possible) of locked on moon. The best Tripod is a video type where once level you can swing side to side of a flying critter. AF will focus on a bird on the other side of a tree once locked on before with tree limbs between and @ 10 FPS electronic shutter you get stop action clearness/sharpness. I take with me deer hunting and great captures way out there, just leave lens and camera in vehicle for cold adaptation so things do not fog up all morning.

I have the apsc version of 200-600, the 70-350 people complain the same. Two things, first a7iv AF not good for birding. Second, use higher Shutter speed twice the focal length. If both OK, then it's a quality issue visit service center

Osprey is correctly pronounced "oss - pray". We don't say "birds of pree". We say "birds of prey", pronounced "pray". The pronunciation of the last syllable of "Osprey" is to receive the same pronunciation.

Cool thanks. Not sure when I decided to change how I pronounce it, my silly brain :)

@@CattailChronicles it actually sounds kinda cool the way you say it!

Almost sounds like she’s discouraging people from having this lens by saying it’s super heavy, a giant, will break your backs etc. I believe (this are super heavy lenses 500mm/600mm/800mm) this kind of weight is somewhere in the middle and very versatile for wildlife shooters. I carry my Canon EF 500mm F/4 with my camera and it weighs almost 10pounds and that I would consider calling a ‘giant’ and super heavy, don’t know why she says so to this lens.

Coming from smaller lenses the weight will be surprising for many people. Not discouraging just trying to be helpful. And you get goofy me too. Some people take photography much too seriously. :)

Hmmmm....... so this lens is not good for shooting at dawn or dusk ?
@CattailChronicles3 жыл бұрын
Oh you can but be prepared for high iso if you are shooting moving animals that need higher shutterspeed. Which is what I primarily shoot with this lens. I'm not usually happy with those shots. Maybe someday I will get my hands on the 600 f4 I saw Mark Smith uses...

@@CattailChronicles Thank you for your helpful response. Can you suggest a lens for recording videos of birds at dusk or dawn that is better than the Sony 200-600 in lower light situations ?
@CattailChronicles3 жыл бұрын
Now for filming you're in luck! Filming is typically around 1/50th shutterspeed (if shooting 24 fps) so you can gather much more light then when trying to freeze motion for photos. I need to try my hand at filing with this lens, likely on a tripod. Mark Smith has perfected filing handheld with this setup. Def check out his YT channel too.

Please share if you’ve had any problems with this lens like not focusing? Or not coming on when connected to the camera? Please let me know 😊

We've had some issues with the lens on the A7RIV but not sure if it's that combo or if the lens or defects or damage. Are you having trouble?

Nah. We had walked around quietly for an hour before this, they just did not come to that pond that day. Hopefully next year I can film the osprey that come to a different pond to share with you. I have lots of photos from there. :)

Wondering if the Sony Lens 200-600 works with the Sony A6600 Camera Body without a converter?
@CattailChronicles Жыл бұрын
We don't have the A6600 but I believe the 200-600 would work together with no extra equipment.
