Hey Jason!! I just want to thank you for everything you've done so far. You've converted me from a Panasonic G85 to an A7iii!!! I've been watching all your videos about the a7iii so far and it's been really helpful for filming videos and pics for my tech channel. Hopefully I will be able to meet you one day (be alpha in Vancouver BC 2/20?) to thank you in person. I really appreciate the advice you gave to me a few months back and hopefully reaching the 10K mark in December this year! and btw...the sony 24mm f1.4 gonz be my next purchase because of this vid haha!!

So, to sum up, the GM produces smoother background blur and cleaner bokeh balls, while the Batis has a better focus tracing and being a tad bit lighter (although the CA is more visible). Looks like I'm keeping my Batis 25. I think the color it renders are more pleasing to my taste. Thank you, Jason, for answering this question! On a side note, the Batis is selling at around US$970 here in Hong Kong :)

I picked up the Zeiss 25 f2 used for $850 from ebay, 10/10 condition with box and everything. The 24 1.4 GM makes me drool, but for $500 less I'll take 1 stop slower aperture. (Also I own the Batis 18mm and 85mm so I enjoy having a a more consistent lens lineup.) But if I had to pick between the Zeiss and the Sony brand new, the Sony would be a no-brainer. I'm impressed with the faster glass Sony has been making for FE. The 24 GM is a surprisingly small lens given the tad oversized problem Sony lenses tend to have. I'd like to see a similarly sized 35 1.4 GM someday.

Batis has better colors + better rendering 04:22 . Also the GM 24 gets CA just as bad @ 09:47 ( Magenta CA on espresso machine, Green CA on the rear window ). Definitely closer than it seems!

I already have the Sony Zeiss 24/1.8 on my a6500, but I really want to get the new GM lens because of the depth chroma aberrations. You can also see them on the Batis lens, notice how the bokeh balls have a bright outline that is also coloured green/blue depending on the WB. Where as the GM lens just has those perfect transparent spheres with clean edges. It's not a big problem with some shots when the entire background is blurred but whenever you have transitions into/out of focus, you can get a massive amounts of coloured edges that are impossible to remove in LR.

Hi Jason, I’m now hesitate between these two lens, since I already have 40 and 85, should I go for 24 or 25 or batis 18mm, and If I find the batis it 300$ cheaper than GM, Should I get 25 Batis or still go for GM?

What will you use the lens for? If it’s for landscapes, architecture or vlogging, I would get the 18mm. I’m about to buy the 18mm this thursday for just $980. I’ll be using it for landscapes and architecture.

Carbon 6 actually, I need it for people with views and also landscape and arch just for photo, I’m afraid that if I go for 18, I might barely use it for general use.

iFreQuency Swan There is a difference, of course, but it’s not enough to ‘not use it for general photography’, as they aren’t far apart, and you’ll get more out of it for landscape- and architecture photography. Both will work great for people with environments in the background. This lens can focus pretty close, so you can also get ‘semi-portraits’, although it doesn’t result in great bokeh and the best quality at minimum focus. I think, you’ll regret going for the 25mm or 24mm, if you tend to often or just enjoy photographing landscapes and architecture. Even 18mm can often not be enough. How is the Batis 40mm? I’m considering this lens for street photography and close-ups.

Carbon 6 thank you for your advice, it’s really help, and for the Batis 40, I really enjoy it for street photography with recent trip in Japan, and it close focus is really great, after the trip I find myself that I need wide lens, bcuz I also owned the Moment Wide lens (18mm) and have a good pictures with it.

iFreQuency Swan And thank you for your help! I might sell my 55mm f/1.8 for the Batis 40mm. 55mm is always too narrow for me, as I use it to photography street photography as graffiti and close-ups of different things in the streets, but I can’t always do that with the 55mm. The 18mm will be great for architecture- and landscape photography. I will also use it to photograph royal buildings inside and so on. You won’t regret getting the 18mm over the 24-25mm, especially not when you feel like getting a wide lens. You can always crop in a bit for 24-25mm, which you won’t be able to do by getting the 24-25mm. There is a big difference from 24-25mm to 18mm in landscape- and architecture photography. Which camera body do you use?
