On 5/5/20, I followed your video instructions to repair my Sony CDP-300CX which was skipping tracks after I got it working by replacing its three belts two weeks ago. I cleaned the rod and plastic gears of old grease and regreased them with Lithium grease. No more skipping. Thanks for sharing your troubleshooting and repair video. Without your detailed and thorough video, my Sony 300 would have gone to the landfill.

This guy has obviously been doing this for a while. As have I. Good explanation of "why", as well. I just did exactly the same thing to the same model machine. It worked the second time, as I didn't clean all of the moving surfaces as thoroughly as I should have, the first time. The old grease does turn into a sticky goo after time and collects whatever schmutz/ shyte/ dust is airborne in your house. I sometimes use very a light bike grease with good results. Or a moly grease, as he did. Sometimes the laser will also drop in output with age and on typical KSS-type Sony laser assemblies a very slight CCW turn of the laser output trimmer dials it up just a touch. This helps with burned CD copies (especially cheap-ass blanks), which have way less reflectivity, and thus less laser pickup output than commercial pressings. NOT less audio volume. Less laser output only affects playability when most discs will play and some don't, as a symptom. Good work Mr 12Volt.

I purchased one of these at a Pawn Shop for $10 last summer. It worked but the CD would get stuck half of the time. It needs both the gear bands and CD. After 8 months of this thing sitting alone I finally fixed the bands and about to grease up the CD Rom. I have sunk in $40 total in this project but plan on selling it. Thanks for this video, you are the man!

I bought a 2nd hand sony mega storage 300cd for 75usd. The seller of course didn't detail the music skipping problem, he only said to clean the laser head with a special cleaning CD to avoid skipping. Well I was pretty disappointed after the first hours of listening. You're video however nailed the problem and its simple solution. It took me only 20minutes to dismantle , lubricate the rail and rebuild everything and it works 100%. Not a single skip in 50 songs from differnet cd's. Thank you !

I successfully replaced all three belts to my CDP355 following this video. Nice details. NOTE: However, If you remove the Disc optic mechanism, in your attempt to replace two belts, be sure to replace it in the exact slot at the bottom of cabinet, as indicated in this video, otherwise you will have Disc failure each time the system retrieves or replaces a disc back into its assigned slot. Also, if you remove any ribbon cable, it is most important to insert correctly or this too can lead to failure of the system. This can be very tricky and frustrating. Ribbon cables are hard to find for this unit.

That video is excellent, but I have a couple questions/ suggestions. 1) because a Q-Tip is too thick to fit the cotton through the bearings for cleaning, I recommend to first remove a lot of the cotton on the end, so it can fit through. 2) As an alternative to the Q-Tip you can roll up a small piece of coffee filter into a rod shape (perhaps 2-3 inches long); saturate with alcohol and pull through the bearing. 3) I would think a light white lithium grease should be a good substitute for the Molkote that is not available locally. 4) You never showed the resolution of the stuck finger holding the disk. Was that connected to the gear you cleaned? Or to the belt-drive gears for rotating the CD tray?

I was looking a 20+ year old boom box the other day with a CD player problem. When I got it apart I found that the laser gear had turned yellow and crumbled. No replacement gears to be had unless I could get someone to 3d print one for it. I noticed that the gear in this unit is also starting to turn yellow. Seems to be a real bad issue with the plastics used. I'm also seeing this problem in older video game console disc drives. Great video as always!
@12voltvids

The yellow color is smoke. The unit is owned by a chain smoker. Philips and Magnavox were bad for their plastic gears turning to mush.

My first Philips tape deck had a gear that was red colored and crumbled and then another yellow one from the autostop that also crumbled, so i had to improvise something to get it to at least play a tape. I took a small motor and atached in place of the counter via a belt to drive the take up reel. Works like a charm. Needless to say that I would never buy another Philips boombox, tape deck, cd player or anything.

If your changer still doesn't work after cleaning the gears try cleaning the black disk grabber, if these get dirty they put dirt on your disc and it will skip. It took me about 2 hours to find that fault 😅 Now it works just fine 😊

I have one of these with the same issue, I tried your fix but the problem remains. I verified the laser assembly does move into its home position if moved manually and then turned on and put in a disc. It can find the start of a track ok, even if set to another track prior to 1 (such as using 1 disc and set to shuffle). When watching the gear during play, there seems to be a slight "jog" or movement backwards after moving "forwards". I have made a video of this movement.

This may occur once in 10 minutes or every 2 to 3 minutes. What could be the problem? Should I replace the laser head unit or there is a problem with the power supply? Thank you!

I have a sony CDP CX 450 with a weird problem....it works fine and plays CD's with no problems until it tries to load disk 140 (1-139 OK), where it will load the disk from slot 141 (but display 140), if I request disk 141 it will load 142, then it will not load any disks until 150 where it seems OK again. It also does this at about the 230 slot position. I've tried different CDs, cleaning lenses on the sensor, checked belts on motors and under the table - all seem fine. After a reset the problem is still there. ANy ideas why this night be happening? Thankyou.

I feel the same way about my 200 disk. Working flawlessly, has never skipped a beat, and sounds fantastic. Have it, along with an old Cassette deck and DAT player on my all tube amplifier in my living room which I put on to listen to from time to time. The sound quality of this unit is excellent. I have not bought any CDs in years, but I still enjoy the ones I have. I have well over 200 CDs though, so what I did was make compliation CDs. Ripped the tracks from all my CDs and only the tracks that I like, leaving the crap tracks. Then I burned 200 80 minute disks to the brim. Actually I think it was only about 180 or so disks and the remaining 20 were willed with CDs that every track is good, you know the samplers and stuff that record companies put out that were already compilations of great stuff. I would love to get my hands on a 300 or 400 disk, just because I love the mechanical aspect. I am still contemplating making a plexiglass cabinet for my 200, and putting it on the top shelf so the operation can be observed while it works, because it is just cool to watch. Like an old Seaburg or Wurlitzer jukebox. That is something on my bucket list, to get an old juke and restore it. My neighbour has a really nice one, and they have no kids to leave it to. (only son died of cancer several years ago) so I have been trying to buy it but so far no luck.

hey do you know if a buggered up tooth on a dvd player's laser sled gear would cause it to crap up at the same spot in a movie every time? Is there a quick way to varify this without having to sit through an entire movie before I sell a unit on craigslist? Im guilty of throwing out possibly good dvd players out of pure lazyness of needing to sit through an entire dvd just to test it to varify if it is bad or not. I had a player that appeared to freas up at the same spot in movies sometimes and sometimes play a entire movie just fine. My worry was that I'd sell it and end up hearing back from the custumor a week later saying its crapping out on them.

Im thinking probably too many variables but the fundamental question remains, would a messed up tooth cause a dvd player to frees up at the same spot, every time, on every movie?

Well you can take it apppart and visually inspect the gears for damaged teeth.

Technics Guy I have not had luck glueing nylon gears. I fused a few together with heat.

I have found that the gears on the laser transport of my Sony 200 disc changer are damaged and not meshing properly. Do you know where I could purchase a new set of these gears?

You may have to find an old cd player and cannibalize it.
