This video really helped. You asked who would be interested in a 5 disc player. Somebody old or folks who frequent garage sales I suppose. We don't all throw everything away with every change in platform, having sunk so much money into audio over the years. I pulled my Sony out of a heap of remnants when my son left home and have been using it for the past 10+ years. And it finally read "No Disk". I figured it was an optical problem just like your guess. It was. But I was intimidated taking it apart not knowing the first thing how to find the counter. I took it apart as you did and cleaned the bit you pointed to and even managed to get it back together, every screw. And it fixed it. So it was more than just an fun "what if". Very useful. Thanks. You better believe I'm going to brag to my son. :-)

Tray did not open so given courage by your video, I took top off and discovered that the rubber belt which moves the tray in and out had fallen off. Nice video. Being from 7 years ago I doubt you are still reading comments on it, but thought I'd drop a line anyway. I just picked up an identical looking unit. It seems to work fine except that sometimes it fails to read when the tray first closes. The tray seems to not seat all the way in completely. If I give it a push then all is well. So I may take it apart, and try lubricating the rails. As to why someone would want this in today's day and age, well for me it is nostalgic. There is something satisfying about handling actual physical media. Sure I have my entire music collection ripped to Flac, and available on my media server, but sometimes I like to actually play the physical CDs. So I was happy to come across this 5-disc changer this week for $20. I'm sure it will provide years of enjoyment.

I'm still reading the comments. I hope you get it working but if not you can get these on eBay all day long. But all of these have age issues so maybe start a record collection. At least you can service old record players.

I never was a huge fan of vinyl. Before the advent of CD's I primarily collected cassettes, but I did have some vinyl, which for better or worse I got rid of about 10 years ago. As for this 5-disc changer it does work. The drawer just seems to stick a little bit when first closing. A slight nudge and it is good to go. So I'm hoping a minor adjustment, or some lubrication is all that it needs. Otherwise it seems to operate great.

Once I pulled it out, the machine works just as it did before.

I have 3 cds stuck inside a Panasonic 5 disc stack system version that broke down today, with one CD quite valuable & rare. More concerned about safe extrication of the discs tgan keeping the player working at this stage, but with no mechanical experience it's a bit daunting! I may try unscrewing some screws to see if I can in any way access them inside. As they say, nothing lasts forever. I suspected it was getting close to the end of its life when the random choice play stopped working, which involved a lotvof disc-changing.

I've got a Magnavox 5 Disk CD Player. Was working great for nearly 20 years and more recently just the last hour....playing several cds without a hitch. I hit open and I was able to retrieve all the cds. I noticed what appeared to be an error message EE but loaded another cd, never the less. After all his machine has been like Kryptonite! Well, it wouldn't close....so I gave the tray a slight nudge. Suddenly it closed like a charm. End of story....you might think? Long story short, it wouldn't play, it wouldn't rotate and it wouldn't open no matter what I did. After retrieving a crow bar to force the tray open, I took a deep breath, popped a Xanax and cracked open a beer and went looking for some online help. Found your video on my first search and watched the entire thing. Now calm again, I took the thing apart and did pretty much everything you did. The good news? The thing works like a charm again. The bad news? I have 2 medium sized screws and 1 really long screw leftover that I have no idea where it goes. Is that bad....? LOL!

I have one of these that was sitting in my basement for 5 years, I just took it out and when I plugged it in it powered on but the front drawer wouldn't open and it wouldnt power off when I pushed the power button, I was going to just throw it away but then I decided to do an old fashioned repair method, I punched it in the power button and punched it in the eject button, the drawer opened 1" and I pulled the drawer out all the way and it closed by itself when I pushed it, and then I was able to get it to open and close by itself, now it's working fine. :), so sometimes the old fashioned repair method (teach it who's boss) really works!

My CDP 315M was bougth in 1985 in Paraguay, I live in Brazil and it has shown the sane synthom as in your demonstration, the caroussel goes back and forth, furthermore it doesnot turn under command, or any way, although its drive motor is ok, the idley pulley that drives the caroussel seems to be glued in its axis. I have two questions: 1) The lilttle motor that drives the caroussel is a step motor or a dc motor? 2) If I can not repair the idle pulley which drives the caroussel, can buy this part, once this CDP model is more than 30 years old? Hello. I have an RCA Boombox (RS 2635) with a 5 disc CD changer. I believe the problem with mine has something to do with the motor that operates the door. I have to pull it out and shove it back in and sometimes it's a bit jerky and sometimes it is troublesome to pull out. Any advice on fixing this? Side note: there also seems to be some trouble with the "Next Track" and "Previous Track" buttons on the front when in TUNER mode. Sometimes these buttons change the station and sometimes they cycle between the 35 Programmable presets, which when they are all set to static this becomes very difficult (I'm trying to change the station and it just goes to the next preset which is also nothing).

My drawer opening problem: plastic strip covering the display has slipped downward again, and so obstructs to prevent drawer opening. If I could either remove the plastic strip totally, or just get it moved upwards on the right-hand side, back into proper place, the drawer would open. Would appreciate advice on how to either remove the plastic strip, or how to just move it's right-hand side upward, to create clearance for the disc drawer to open?
@ToddFun9 жыл бұрын
Patricia Allen If it is the same make and model as the one in my video you can unplug it and it disassembles easily. Once you have the front off you can take the display out and put it back correctly. If this is not the case and you can't stick something to the display cover to pull or pry it up then it might not be something you can fix.

Hi Todd. I have a Panasonic 5 disc changer that needs repair. Can you fix it? If so, what are your rates?
@ToddFun10 жыл бұрын
Serenity Justice Sorry, I don't do repairs for a fee. My fees would be far more than replacement cost so I only do such repairs to save myself the cost of replacement. Best advice is to get a used iPod on eBay and use iTunes to copy all your CDs to mp3 files and then dump to the iPod. The iPod can then be jacked into most any AUX connection on the back of your home stereo system, CD players and some newer cars have an AUX jack. If your car does not have a AUX jack then do like I do and get one of those FM transmitters that plugs into the iPod to keep it charged and at the same time it will transmit music over a select-able FM freq that you can tune your car radio into to listen to your iPod over your car's old stereo system. I hope this helps, you might have known all this anyway.

Hey thanks for the great video, Todd! Although, I'm not sure why you said..."who wants a 6 disc CD player, anymore?" What is the alternative? iTunes?? Streaming?? Yuck!! Anyway, I have the same player and so far, no problems. But I have another that I got last week from a kerbside cleanup that, as soon as it's powered up, it searches for the discs. When it finds a disc, it spins it up, then stops and goes searching again. I cleaned the laser with isopropyl and a q-tip, but still no luck. Any idea what this could be? The local repair guy said it could cost up to $200 to fix it, with a possible laser replacement!! Crazy price for an old unit that I scored for nothing. I would like to be thrifty and fiddle with it myself to try and get it to work.
@ToddFun9 жыл бұрын
***** I don't see the point for CD players because you can pop them into a PC and convert them all to MP3 files. Then you can play the files on anything. I put mine CDs into iTunes and made play lists. Then I just move play lists to my iPod or phone to play. If I want better sound I just jack my iPod into an stereo amp and is the the iPod to pick my songs or playlists. Works so much easier than switching out CDs. If a cleanup didn't work then most likely it will be the laser reader. Sounds like it can do all the stuff but read the disks so its going to be too costly to repair.
@wickedvinyl19709 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks. I don't have an iPod, in fact, I will never buy an Apple anything. I don't like the way they try to monopolise the market. I'm old fashioned and like owning the covers with the printed information and photos. I actually prefer records over CDs, but still use mp3s a lot. At home sometimes, or in the car or work truck....CDs. I'm old fashioned...I think Hi-Fi is well an truly alive and I won't ever support the obsolescence of such useful components. Besides, I've only just started to accept CDs. Haha! If I was to replace the laser reader with a new part, would I have to adjust tracking etc? I'm thinking I might just toss this one.
@ToddFun9 жыл бұрын
***** If you can find an exact replacement you have a chance but the unit can't be worth the cost. I'm sure you could get a fully working unit off eBay or Craig's list for less cost than a replacement without the worry that you have the exact replacement part for your unit. I have never changed just a laser pickup before but I know they run on an active feedback signal that self aligns the read head with the tracks provided it is mounted correctly. That is the most I know.
@wickedvinyl19709 жыл бұрын
***** Yep. Cheers. It's $12.27 for a brand new identical laser reader. I'm going to get it and try it.

***** I hope it works. Yet you don't know if the laser is bad or something else, for $12 its a sound thing to try. Let me know how it turns out and include a link to where you got the module in cause others would like to try this fix... provided it works.

Dear Mr. Harrison, I own a Magnavox CDB 650 (1986 made, in Europe, purchased in US) that stops after about the 6th or 7th track on a disc. I did have it open yesterday, and, useing a lens brush, (no solvent), gently brushed the lens & CD receiving spindle of any dust. They looked fine, with very little dust. Put cover back on (the only thing removed), but still have the same issue. The other noticeable symptom is, after the 4th track (same CD), the ¿servo? makes a high pitch noise/whine. (It's quiet for 1st 4 tracks, however, but the soft whine shows up as said). ¿Is there any advice/help you can offer me, kindly, please? I like this player, as I've modified it's output stage (DC) with better capacitors, and has worked fine for many years. It's only these last few years that this problem came up. Thank you very much.

Bad electrolytic capacitors in the power supply could be one possible problem. However the cheapest solution is to replace it from something working on eBay or move all your CDs to computer files using iTunes or some such program then get a bluetooth player and either push music to it from your phone or put all your music on a SD card and put it in the player. I have this one and it works great: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JGFH33M "EasyAcc Mini Portable Bluetooth 4.1 Speaker with Mic, 3.5mm Aux, FM Function, Micro SD Card Support"

Thought I'd try to see if there's a possibility of learning how to fix my 5 disc player. I'ts amazing that such a tiny bit of dust was all that was wrong with the one in your video. I can see that it would probably cost more to have it fixed that what I payed for it several years ago on Black Friday...$65. The disc go around but nothing plays, guess I'll keep it for the tape player and the radio which still work. I'm good at taking things apart and then losing the screws and that's what has happened. I pretty much gave up on getting it apart after removing the easily removable screws and not being able to see why it wouldn't come apart beyond that. So...your camera work was great as well as your presentation. Thank God, this wasn't accompanied by some God awful music like a lot of videos, thanks for that. Too bad, I did so want to play my "Nabucco" CD once again (Verde). I think the cat knocked this over, don't think it jumped off of the hearth by itself. Thanks for the video.

Alice Crawford Sorry you couldn't fix your player. But I'm glad my video was at least of some help. I have used iTunes to convert all of my CDs to MP3 files. @ToddFun11 жыл бұрын
If it loads the CD and spins it up like it is going to run it, then your CD laser is not aliening or is bad. If it simply does not load and spin up the CD then you may have a bad optic. Either way, it can't be worth more time. Get an mp3 player and put all your music on that, connect mp3 player to system and never change a disk again. If all your music is on CD then use iTunes to transfer to a library and load onto an iPod. Records are gone, reel to reel is gone, 8 track is gone, cassette tape is gone and now CD is gone. Best just to move on to solid state, it is better in every way really. I have trashed my CD player and now just have an iPod jacked into my system. It has been great and super easy to make play lists, switch between play lists and best of all, all my music is now on on iPod and I never have to change out anything. I should have made the switch earlier but I was so apposed to yet another new media. I'm glad I switched and I'm hoping this is my last media switch for life! HA good luck to me and you!

That loads but spins for a very few (1%) occasions. I will let know in details.: 1. tray Opens and closes on operating button. 2. After placing CDs and shutting, starts taking CD to reading assembly. Takes up from its seat and puts down again and takes next CD. And this goes on. Only at a very few occassions it takes a little time to read and its reading attempt is known by its sound. Once or twice it spinned too.But ohh... But I enjoyed the struggle. ( I am sure it will get tired sometime and wl start playing. Ha. Haa..) I hd gvn up these kind of works long back. Yr VDO inspired me to try this, and I started with screw driver. Anyway, that was ok. I may try that once again. But u hv referred about alignment of the lens. U knw I cant do that Ha. Haa Haa..... U c Todd, for a professional like you it is nothing, but if a layman sets right a faulty electric press only by cleaning contacts/rust, it is a big joy. Is it not? I hv enjoyed such repairs through out my life. To reach up to u was one attempt out of that. Internet has done wonders. and Google is doing miracles. I hv already thought of the 'switchover' u suggested. I hv alrdy tried that. Thats a good wayout. Because otherwise the music output is very fine. I hv a very few no. ACDs and VCD, but a good number of MP3 and VCDs The changeover u suggested is the only way even if the CD tray starts functioning. Mr Todd, this sys I hd purchased 2nd hand as is where is basis. Because I love music, and I was searching a cheap 2nd hand good music sys. for Indian Rs. 1500 ( Approx. USD 26) at the place where I am posted at present. I am away from my house till June next. I shall end this loneliness and go home, after my retirement at my 60. If you happen to visit India, then welcome to Ratnagiri, a coastal district place, till June 2014. After that u r welcome to PUNE my normal place of stay, a city known for educational institutes. And I m planning to stay some of the leisure time at my hometown near AKOLA distt. 500 KMs. away from Pune. You r welcom there too at my old house. Nice to hv interactions with you. Thank you. Merry Christmas !!

Jeevanlal Patel Visiting India would be great! However, I don't even like to leave my home town. I hate to travel. I left the US two times in my life, once to drive to Canada and once to drive to Mexico. Two most horrible trips of my life. I just don't like the cultural change mostly. So the changes of my making it to India is about 0%. If my company ever makes me go to India I will come back to this thread and let you know. My company does send developers to India a few times a year but I'm a database administrator so no good reason to send me to India. Plus, I don't have a passport. Never needed one so never applied. Sorry you can't get your player to work, sounds like the laser optics for the CD reader are not working or aligning with the CD tracks. So many things could be wrong. Make sure to test with the cover one just in case the light from the room is messing with any sensors.

Thank you. Tried after replacing cover. No change. Seems something wrong and cant be repaired at my level. But anyway I am at present using a DVD player. that plays most of formats. I may get repaired one Pioneer dvd player lying faulty with me. Its SMPS is faulty. I normally browse OLX. It is my experience that you get right things you need and at economical price. You may enjoy here and experience different life and lifestyles. In US, as I hear, everything is smooth and life is cool. But here you have to move, for simple needs. We are used to that. This is a country of 1.3 population. I remember till 1965-70, we had to import lot of grains from your country. ( for 0.6 billion people) Thereafter with assistance and association of US, gradually our home product went on growing. Today hopefully we are self sufficient in food grains for 1.3 billion heads, and help to developing countries. US for a long time has always been ten steps ahead of developed Europeans. But my talk is getting long. Thank you. Wish you merry times.Lot of success. May the almighty grant you power and courage to attain what you wish in life. Merry Christmas.

I have an Onkyo 6 disc carousel changer.dxc606.the tray opens and closes but it does not spin by pressing any buttons on the face and also the remote..and therefore does not play any discs since they arent moved to the correct location..would that be the motor assembly or could that also be a dirty lens problem?.. i did get it to spin once by pressing the button about 30 times lol but no luck since then,, help! lol thanks..also where is a good place to get parts for that?
@ToddFun10 жыл бұрын
You can unplug it, take it apart, clean the optics and make sure the tray is not jammed in any way. If that doesn't help you best not try to fix it unless you have all the right tools, experience, time and consider it a personal challenge because it is not cost effective to buy parts for something that can be replaced with little expense.

***** thanks,this is more of a sentimental thing for a friend..i am savvy in fixing just about anything..I build and fix comps and tvs..so I'm not worried about taking it apart and messing with it,,but just wanted to be guided in the right direction ..i did see the motor assembly is only $27 so that's not bad..I can spin the tray manually..but wasnt sure if that includes the motor or if this could be a simple fix of just cleaning it out, it sat in a basement for about 7 years unplugged and I know capacitors can lose their juice over time by just sitting around

with mine the doohickey that lifts up the cd is stuck in the up position between discs any recommendations ?

+Martin Roloff If you can't find what has it jammed then time to trash it and migrate all your CDs to a MP3 player.

I think I buy one of these, and put an LED strip in there and a smokey glass cover, makes for a very retro kitsch juckbox:)

Would compressed air be the worst thing to use to try to clean dust/debris out of the disc player? And who wants a multi discount player? The person with over a 1,000 cds and likes to play them.
@ToddFun Жыл бұрын
taking them apart and gently cleaning the optics with a Q-tip helps a lot of times too.
@winni2236 жыл бұрын
Hey, you just pulled it off easily, my choice for years has been Technics and although nicely built they suffer from the same problems. I've just got a similar carousel from my favourite make but it might need the lens replacement. Slightly more complex job

Maybe donate it somewhere? My partner fixes up TV's and donates them to his church. They're always helping out poor people, people just getting started, etc. I notice you seem to like scopes and meters. I'm a 'Multimeter Junkie". Fluke and Agilent right now mainly.

Tod, Ha Ha!:) Well, you know I was just kidding Ya:) I knew you were just takin it apart because... that's what guys like us do;) Glad you are using the old girl again. Looked like a pretty clean unit over all. I think CD Players will still be useful, for as long as guys like me are too lazy to Rip all of our CD's and put them in the Computer... Oh! And buy an MP3 Player too... I still don't have one of those:O Don

Ha, ha, well, you lost me on that too. I don't have one of those fancy phones and never saw a need for one. I'm too old to start over on these steep learning curves. BTW, I can't help but wonder who all these people are talking to. People are walking around in stores totally involved in conversation and seem oblivious to what's around them. I hope this phenomenon goes the way of the CB radio because I'm offended by having to listen to the conversation of others and their disregard of the invasion of my right to peace and quiet.

we have a Panasonic 5 disc carousel from 1991 and the laser don't longer works. can it be replaced
@ToddFun9 жыл бұрын
+Carolyn Balkcom It could be possible but it would be cheaper to purchase a working one off eBay or switch over to an mp3 player or ipod connected to the aux in of your stereo system. I would not try such a repair on such old and obsolete equipment. You should watch 12voltvids video on some of the cd player repairs " kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5K7qHmVZqmrqqM" as well as others on KZbin if you do plan on trying to fix your player.
