That said, if my budget was infinite, I could certainly see myself buying the Sony G Master just for that added resolving power and contrast- Would make a noticeable difference to the product photography that I periodically do but there's quite a but more that I can do with the $1,000 (buys a 4th AD600B)

I've just finished your 85mm shootout series! I have just recently moved to the Sony ecosystem from Nikon, and so have been looking at some new glass. I am tempted though to go with the Viltrox, only because I have often liked to make a point of saying to people that you don't need the most expensive kit to make good images. The images coming out of that Viltrox aren't bad at all, and certainly, if I watched the reviews correctly, seem to be very minor differences. CA won't mean a thing as I like to produce in Black and White! So might be onto a winner with the Viltrox there! Thanks for doing the series of reviews. Have just subscribed too!

Could the different size of the bokeh circles at close focus distances be caused by different levels of focus breathing?
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
It's either focus breathing, differences in focal length, or some combination of them both.
@Lyndonmancio5 жыл бұрын
Just a thought. maybe the length of the lens? Try shooting both lenses frm the same distance from the subject to the lens tip. (Excluding the hood) Sigma has the impression of having a shallower dof because its longer, hence closer to the subject. Thats why your setup with changing lens on a stationary tripod ddnt have the same distance. Just a theory 🤔
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
I've thoroughly tested the Sigma in the past, and it is actually a little short of 85mm. The Samyang and GM are basically the same length, so that isn't the cause of the variance there.
@MJAdams-js7np4 жыл бұрын
Hey Dustin!! Long time fan! If you had a choice between Batis and Sony 1.8, and had other Batis lenses....which would you choose if price wasn’t an issue? Batis right? Or should I save a couple hundred more for the new sigma? Ugh, can’t decide.

Great Video, thanks. What do you think about low light situations? Would 1.4 vs 1.8 make a huge difference (e.g. night-shots in cities)?
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
It makes 2/3rds of a stop difference, meaning that an F1.4 lens would allow a faster 1/100th second shutter speed compared to a 1/60th second shutter speed in similar conditions. It also means that that more light can reach the focus system due to the larger maximum aperture. That can make a significant difference in extreme low light focus.
@mexmax16574 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI hm ok, thanks for the Info. I wanted to use it for handheld night City shots. I'm not quite sure if it's really worth it the price difference. Using a Sony a7r III so stabilization should already help me enough, at least I hope so (?)

I always love 85 shootout's, I think the biggest surprise is how good the Viltrox is. it looks like a great lens for the money. and for my conclusion, I think the Sigma is a great lens but to big and heavy for me, but if weight is not an issue it's worth the Money, the Batis just seems over priced when there are two cheaper lenses that perform for the most part as good. but I like that it's weather sealed, the Samyang is definitely worth the money, but I like the extra contrast of the GM, but you can ad contrast in post, I guess I would have to give a slight win to the GM if I wasn't judging it buy the price, but for the money the Samyangs allot better of a deal, I personally own the Sony 85 f1.8, I love it's size and weight, and the image quality is also really good, and it's good for the money also. I also have an old Sigma 85 f1.4 that I adapt, ( not the art ) but I haven't used it much since getting my Sony, I wish the 85 Otus had auto focus and came in an FE mount and cost $2000.
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын

Where do you stand on selling the Sony 1.8 for getting an almost identically priced Samyang 85 (new at 450 Eur)? Prices being equal trumps native/non native, AF and other differences for that extra f-stop step up? I don't mind the extra weight and I mostly shoot semi-pro stills. Your reviews are a sight for sore eyes sir, keep up the good work and thank you for taking the extra time to answer to each and every one of us! Great series! Cheers from Greece.
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your intended purpose, but, for me, the Samyang trumps the Sony F1.8 because I feel the images are more special. I use an 85mm lens more for a portrait and event lens, and the Samyang works very well in those situations.

The ART 105 is a fabulous lens...but it is also incredibly massive. It's 3x the weight of the Samyang 1.4, and twice even the GM. In some ways that kind of takes it out of the realm of relevance to most of these lenses save the Sigma.
