I totally agree with your opinion about friends and family not realizing you dropped a grand on lens vs using kit lens!! I really don't understand why the kit lens gets so much hate. I personally think its great for an everyday lens - it's light, it's small, has a great zoom range, and it's quite sharp. People who review lens compare sharpness down to the pixel of the image. Realistically, no one looks at the final photo like that. They look at the zoomed out version and look at the overall image quality, most likely on their mobile phones too! I actually find it quite silly when i see camera reviews of two lens of totally different price ranges and the reviewer zooms 200% to the image comparing, only to find that the more expensive lens does indeed look a sharper, but when zoomed out, the difference in sharpness, to me, does not justify a $500 difference.

Edgar Cheung I get comments about how sharp my photos look on FB but it is because they are comparing them with the ones they get with their phone or from a DSLR in full auto mode, which can be great in good light but generally fail in low light or sports.

I would like to see you maybe in the future do a video on what vintage 35mm lenses to look for on the used market. Plus the adapters for the A6*** cameras. There are a lot of decent zooms out there and primes. Even though I have a A6500, the vintage look from older lenses is what made me go with the IBIS instead of the A6300. I just think it's a cool cheap way for your viewers to realize the potential in some older glass with adapters if they are just getting into photography.

Other Auto Focus options worth mentioning: * Sigma 19mm f/2.8 gets you faster shutter speeds (2/3 Stops) in low light (like indoors in the evening) and way sharper images (10 perceived mega pixels vs 6 pmpx on the 16-50 kit lens) . And it's as cheap as it gets for the e-mount. Use faster shutter speeds to account for the missing Optical Steady Shot OSS. * Sony 20mm f/2.8 the same with a better focus accuracy (more shots in perfect focus) with sharp images (9 pmpx). Use faster shutter speeds to account for the missing Optical Steady Shot OSS. * Sigma 30mm f/2.8 the same with 50% more zoom (9 pmpx). Use faster shutter speeds to account for the missing Optical Steady Shot OSS. * Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is just awesome (16 pmpx) for its price. I have heard that only 70% of the photos are in perfect focus (it focuses slower than the Sony lenses). Use faster shutter speeds to account for the missing Optical Steady Shot OSS. * Sony 35mm f/1.8 APSC OSS it's great with 11 pmpx sharpness and focus speed * Sony 50mm f/1.8 APSC OSS it's great with 13 pmpx sharpness and focus speed if you need that much zoom * Sony Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 perfect focus accuracy (>95%), great sharpness (13 pmpx), great focal length (24mm), great in low light, but expensive. You can find it 2nd hand for much less. Use faster shutter speeds to account for the missing Optical Steady Shot OSS. * Sony 18-105 f/4 OSS it's great when outdoors (9 pmpx), handles badly indoors in the evening (because of the f/4). * Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 it's just awesome with 16 pmpx even if a bit expensive. Lenses to avoid: * Sony 16mm f/2.8 not sharp at all and no OSS * Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS gets the same Image Quality IQ as Sony 16-50 f/3.5-5.6 OSS * Sony 18-200mm OSS (7pmpx & 5pmpx for LE) should be much sharper for that price. www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-E-18-200mm-F35-63-LE-on-Sony-A6000-versus-E18-200mm-F3-5-6-3-on-Sony-A6000-versus-Sony-E-PZ-18-105mm-F4-G-OSS-on-Sony-A6000__1085_942_274_942_1215_942 Auto Focus is mandatory when taking photos of children because they just won't stand still for you to focus manually. www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-E-20mm-F28-on-Sony-A6000-versus-Sigma-19mm-F28-EX-DN-Sony-E-on-Sony-A6000-versus-Sony-E16-50mm-F35-56-on-Sony-A6000__1093_942_826_942_1082_942 www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/Sigma-30mm-F28-DN-A-Sony-E-on-Sony-A6000-versus-Sigma-30mm-F14-DC-DN-C-Sony-E-on-Sony-A6000-versus-Sony-E-Carl-Zeiss-Sonnar-T-24mm-F18-ZA-on-Sony-A6000__1102_942_1692_942_1155_942

Thanks for keeping it real, man! I was thinking of just getting the 18-105 for my first real camera (a6400). But might just get the kit for now, learn and then get the 18-105 later. Cheers!
@trym21215 жыл бұрын
If you can get a deal with body only then get the 18-105 then why not. To be honest sony apsc zoom lens selection isn't that great compared to their FE line up and their competitor. Even the expensive $900 Zony 16-70mm f/4 is more of consumer enthusiast level, while Fuji has $1100 16-55mm f/2.8 that is made for professional It's yearly rumor that sony will release better apsc lens and camera but at this point, it's more like a joke. If you haven't bought the camera and can wait, try waiting until this year as confirmed rumor this year will release new apsc camera and lenses.

Manual focus lens always sound scary to a beginner like me, however with your tutorial on manual focus lens, i got myself a Meike 35mm f1.7 manual focus lens last week. All i can say is i'm totally happy with the image quality at this price range. Manual focus lens really not something hard to do and i get to achieve closer result to what im looking for compare to the auto focus. I am considering to buy 18-105 lens for better reach, as I feel constricted while using 16-50. Also, I don't like to change the lens a lot, and 55-210 has high aperture value, so I think 18-105 can be good. What's your take on that?

Thanks for this video, for some casual situations I will actually try to downgrade to 16-50mm kit lens from using huge adapted Sigma lenses on A6500, and I will hope that it will be sharp enough for personal casual use.
@RockWILK3 жыл бұрын
I'm late to the party here, I see this was posted in 2017, but it's great insight. I use the a6400, and I actually love the 16-50 kit lens, and do professional work with it. I also have the Sony 35mm f1.8 OSS, mainly to be prepared for low light situations, and I found the 55-210 OSS for $100, so I picked it up, and it's an awesome lens, for specific things. Really fun to use. But I find the kit lens on my camera 90% of the time. Works great on my Crane M2 gimbal, as does the 35mm. But... I feel like an upgrade to a higher quality lens is coming for me, mainly because I am just curious if that will really change my work. Meaning I wonder if it will really look that different. I am leaning toward the Tamron 17-70, as I am a filmmaker and don't really do much still photography. I figure the extra $300 is worth bypassing the 18-105 for the f2.8, but maybe not??? ;) I have also been considering these SLR magic manual lenses. I use manual focus 90% of the time anyway, and those lenses are really reasonably priced and get amazing reviews across the board, but I like having the flexibility of a zoom lens. It suits my workflow a bit better, but then again, being someone who mainly makes movies, changing lenses is really not a big deal. I'm not usually in a rush to get a shot. Most are planned out. I'm certainly not a "run and gun" kind of shooter, in general. I have a documentary to shoot that will begin in a few weeks, that actually might require more "run and gun", so maybe I'll grab the Tamron by then, which will mean I have to upgrade my gimbal as well, so probably the Weebill S.... or... maybe I'll just stay with what I have. I'm curious, though, for sure... Will my work look better with better lenses? And I mean in a "real world" sense, not in a "pixel peep" sense. I don't really care about that at all. Anyway, whew!! Thanks for the great review/insight, I'm subscribed and interested in more of your videos... keep up the great work.

Awesome! I just bought a Sigma 30mm F2.8, but I kept the kit lens too. I like the 16mm for selfies or group shots. Just sticking with a 30mm is too restrictive for me, and I think the kit lens is quite sharp!

I have both the kit lens and the alpha mount 16-50 f2.8 (using LA-EA4 adapter). Differences? The more expensive one is sharper, and faster. But there are many times when I just don't need sharper and faster. People often talk about a given len's being soft in the corners but so often that doesn't matter because those soft corners are not noticeable because they blend in with the bokah. There are times when I'll take the f2.8 lens because I'm really wanting that super sharp result, or I know I'll be wanting better low light performance. But 80% of the time that small form factor kit lens will do a fine job, and I can slip the camera in my jacket pocket. I've found that upgrading to the a6500 (from A65) has made all of my lenses better.

I’m looking to use it for my vacation in Costa Rica where I would mainly want to take pictures of wildlife, birds, monkeys, splats etc. Or what lens in the range of up to $800-900 would you recommend for that? Thank you in advance.

Hiiii!!! that1cameraguy greeting from Panama City, Panama. Sorry for the long comment! I know this is an old video but I wanted to thank you, cause all of your a6000 videos are very helpful I just came from an Canon 500D to a Sony a6000 in 2019. I'm struggling significantly to get sharp photos I had follow many tips on how to correct it but I feel I'm still not get in it (maybe I need to practice more). What you said from minute 7:15 to 8:10 is really true! a relative asked me to take portraits of her teenage daughter and for real those photos aren't sharp at all but they love it! they had applied some IG filters and that's it. I'm also tight on budget but I was thinking to get the **Sigma 30mm F1.4 Contemporary DC DN Lens for Sony E** (I like portraits and off course Bokeh) but I don't know if is a wise move? I know this isn't a portrait lens but I'm willing to try it as that.

I follow you and appreciate your contributions. I bought ny first serious (then) camera in 2001. It was an Olympus camera, with the 3.5 megapixel! Lol. Alas, after shooting for a couple of time and never bothering to learn it, I put it aside. It sat on my shelf with an occasional travel using. Then the iPhone came in and Back to the shelf went the camera. There it sat all these years, until last year I gave it to my grandson to try to foster in him an early love of photography. My point is that after I retired I decided to take up photography as a hobby. I bought a Sony a6000 with a kit lens and delved in earnest into landscape photography. With my love of traveling, it was a perfect match. I always wondered if this love of photography had kicked in when I bought that Olympus, where I’d be today! Now, that I have had some time to shoot with the a6000 as hobby, I was thinking of monetizing this hobby to help buying equipment and defray travel expenses. I own besides the kit lens, a Sigma 30mm f 1.28, a Neewer 35mm f 1.17 lenses. My question is, if I want to produce image that can sell, where do I go from here equipment wise?

Thanks for the video. I am at the point where you mentioned about other people are happy with the photos I take and don't notice how sharp or soft the photos look. But I notice when I pixel peep. The photos I take are not sharp as I want when I use my 18-105m. Don't get me wrong it is a great lens, but I am a videographer and considering to get the 16-70 for photos. But I hear the 16-70 images are soft from 50-70m where as the photos are sharper on the 18-105m from 50-105 and softer from 18-50m...So here lies my dilemma. Keep my 18-105m trade it in for the 16-70m and hope I good copy.

Sony REALLY needs to make a 16-70 f/2.8 for APS-C I love the sony bodies. Even though they're a bit more complicated. What is holding me back from buying an A6500 is the limited lens option factor. Otherwise that camera is a blast! Image quality is very good when I compared it to the 80D but the A6500 just BLOWS away any sort of competition when you switch to Video mode. . This is how I'm thinking to adjust : Buy an A6500 body Sony 16mm f/2.8 pancake lens (for vlogging and wide angle shots) Sigma 30mm 1.4 (There's just no doubt it is a blast in low light as well as location or semi portrait shots) Now lastly I'm confused between the Sony 50mm f/1.8 APS-C and the New Sony 85mm f/1.8 FE. I really love that 85mm lens for it's compression and sharpness but I am not sure how much quality the FE lens will give up to work on an APS-C camera. If the results are closer to the 50mm 1.8 then I think I will pick a 50mm 1.8 . P.S - If anyone has suggestions, kindly comment and help a brother out. (Also, I don't want the Sigma 60 f/2.8 I usually shoot at f2.0)

Hey I've been really enjoying your videos. I'm deciding between the a6000 vs a6300. I just like to take photos of food and posting on instagram. Which camera and lens combination would be the best? My budget is around $1200

You offered some great insight on this debate of upgrading from the kit lens - thank you. I've read some comments about receiving a "bad" 16-50mm lens and unfortunately, even after returning it, receiving another "bad" lens. How would I know if I have a good lens or a bad lens? What should I be looking for? Thanks

I am considering Meike 12mm F2.8 or Samyang 12mm F2.0 for A5100. I own Meike 35mm and its a nice lens compare to the kit lens. I want to sell photo online but kit lens will no allow me to do that due to the sharpness of it. Do you think I should get Meike or Samyang for 12mm? Meike is half of the price for Samyang I could find.

Thanks for the advice! About to pull the trigger on an A6400 (body only) and was considering the 18-105mm F4 OSS as a replacement to the kit lens (like you predicted in your video). I'm just getting into photo/videography so perhaps starting out with the kit lens and upgrading along the way would be wiser! Subbed, keep up the good work and all the best!

thank you for your humility on the Sony a6000 kit lens! I also got the 18mm Samyang as ultra wide. Awesome. I 'll do my first wedding for a friend. On the flash I bought a bouncing diffuser for $20 AUD. that is all I need for the moment.

Such a golden advice dude. I just got my Sony A6000 a few weeks ago (after watching many reviews including yours) and I'm itching to buy a new lens since then. I've watched THIS video for the 3rd time now and I'm convinced to stick to my 16-50mm for a while. Besides, Sony won't make this kit lens if it wasn't good for any type of user. I might consider buying the Meike 35mm f/1.7 some other time but at least that's more affordable than the Sony 35mm OSS. The best purchases are the ones you don't make... Not yet (at least). Thanks dude!!

I recently purchased the a6300 with kit lens and the 55-210. One month later I purchased the 35mm 1.8. Yes It was an impulsive buy but it was on sale for 330, plus I had credit. I could not resist that deal. I'm signing up for classes to make sure I did waste my money.

Looking at getting either an A6000 or A6300 mostly for travel videos what would you recommend? Leaning more towards the A6300 for the future proofing with 4K and the better autofocusing just the extra cost is making me juggle between them, what would you say ?

Thanks a lot for the video! Very concise and informative. I'm considering buying a Sony A6000, and thought that buying a budget lens of 35 mm 1.7 would be a good idea, most of all to take night shots. Do you think that would be wise, or I should stick to the kit lens?

I personally recommend sigma 30mm f1.4 dc dn prime lens SOOOOO sharp I bought it after alot of researches and you can afford it without breaking your bank! the price is to low for a prime and a sharp lens its over 340$ I really recommend it.

Just got an A6000. Have watched at least five of your videos so far. This one might be my favorite, just given how you explain when and why to upgrade a lens. Previous to this camera I was using a Canon DSLR - very basic - and I bought one lens for it thinking that would solve my issues. It didn't , hence my complete change in gear. BUT one thing I never did, was invest in truly learning that camera. At the end of the day, it wasn't the quality I wanted, but I think the idea of learning what you have is SO important! And the feeling of knowing when you've "maxed out" the lens and that's when you should upgrade is on point. Thanks for sharing and keep the videos coming!

HI I have been using Sony A7 for 6 months and I just wanted to switch to smaller size (and cheaper) alternate because the lenses for FF are expensive and without OSS. So I bought Sony A6000, my pictures look a bit washed out and bit less sharp than the pictures I see on the videos of different channels on KZbin (when they compare kit lens with other lenses). Can you tell me what might be the reason that my pictures are bit washed out and less sharp? Thanks :)

Thanks for video. What you think about 18-135 lens in compare with 18-105? I like kit lens but still need more zoom and ready to upgrade but cant make a decision between this two lenses)

Excellent videos. I have been watching close in getting a Sigma 30mm 1.4 but i have recently found about a Rokinon 35mm 1.4 (i think it is 55~mm in apsc) and both are very tempting. In one hand sigma is 30mm and the rokinon one works if i ever buy a FF sony camera, whats your opinion about those 2 lenses?. Sadly i cant get in my hands that meike manual lens that you showed in this video, if not i would had considered it too. Greetings from Mexico [Hope i did myself clear with this question >.

Definitely need to upgrade from the kit lens....My lens was cleaned, but my photos from my recent trip to the zoo was underwhelming. The limitation to the range was a bit stressful. But I am still learning the gamut of options on the camera. Enjoying your videos and the knowledge I've been learning from you and the support your giving to us a6000 users who are still learning!!

Hello I have a6300 with kit lens. Kind of new to dslr and mirrorless cameras. I have to shoot a christmas event at my boss place. So I am guess lot of artificial light or some low light situation. Possibly a red carpet kind on setup too. I am considering using song 35mm 1.8 for the event. Any recommendations for the settings? (like for red carpet and than may be dancing people) I would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thanks
